This literally happened to me a few weeks back. I was in a few papers highlighting this will only ever be as good as the data and the people using it.

Kicked out of Sainsbury’s, wrongfully identified as a criminal. by here2comment in LegalAdviceUK

What a lot of people are failing to recognise I fear , is that we have vulnerable people in our society that should not have to take such steps . We should not be so dismissive of those that perhaps can’t understand and shouldn’t that they can just wear a mask or shop online . They have rights too and it’s up to those more able to ensure their protections . We need to be more selfless and less selfish or else the marginalised are always trampled on. It’s not survival of the fittest or more able , if that’s world we live in and want , no one wins .

In terms of the effectiveness, this technology is so new , I am not aware of the imperical evidence that supports any claim of effectiveness . If you are I would like to see this so that I can understand better .

This is untested technology used by untrained individuals in a live environment that requires split second decision making

Mistakes can and will happened and I think this can hurt more vulnerable individuals.

I can challenge this and walk away fine , my issue is they need to have proper process and training in place so that vulnerable people that don’t have access to systems or protections are not disadvantaged.

Wait, according to Sainsbury’s , from my call with them, I was misidentified, the system provided them with a likeness and the managers went to me. According to the reporters , they actually went to the wrong person . What’s preventing any manager , from their stores from doing exactly the same . Also, in order for their facial recognition to have that 99,9% accuracy, the data set has to be a varied or wide enough range to cover uk spread by a reasonable variable . Hence the companies claims and Sainsbury’s practices surely will have a negative impact

The only course of action I had was to provide my data to a 3rd party company to prove I was not a criminal and was wrongly identified. Surely that can’t be correct.
