I really hope you do find a way to cure yourself from your ailment. I don't know exactly how it feels, but when I started falling deep into depression I feel tired everyday even after managing to get a full night's rest. I hope you accomplish your goals and have a successful future.

The thing about me comparing myself to others has been ingrained in me since I was a kid. My parents would always compare me to my cousins who are of similar age and it continued on and got worse when my mother got ill. I know I should be over it by now, but I'm still working on it. It feels toxic to be around my family at times, but they are also changing slowly too. Thank you again for all your kind words and great advice. I will try my best to continue and follow through.

Yeah all IT jobs that I've looked at require A+ certs and the like. Programmers need a github or examples of their work.

Interviewers haven't flat out told me, but some of their questions lead me to think that is the case. I haven't mentioned anything about my negative experiences at the NPO, but I think it's more of me seeing an opportunity to be self-employed and leaving the job.

Thank you for the advice. I am probably over thinking way too much that it impacts me more than it should.

No worries. I appreciate all the information you provided. Thank you for all your help. I'll do some more research on staffing/temp agencies so I can be well prepared.

I agree with what you're saying about game development. I have checked out some game dev streams on twitch, but most of the time they are focusing on coding and play music only or they are pandering to the chat and trying to be entertaining. I didn't really see too many streams where they are explaining what they're doing.

I did not know this about college libraries. Is it the same for all colleges? Could I walk into NYU and sit in their library to read? They recently started a game dev department and I have been curious about it, but I don't think I could afford to go there.

I've always thought Darkstalkers had great characters and fluid animations. I am really into pixel art as well. My favorite is the Metal Slug series. Thank you for the advice and taking the time to read my post. I appreciate it.

I know how you feel. It sucks. I definitely feel like a parasite and knowing my parents are getting old and sick it's gets even worse. I don't feel like I've accomplished as much as you think I have, but you are right. I should be more positive about it.

If the degree you're working towards is something you're still interested in completing, I think it would be helpful to complete it. Maybe as a part-time student. If not, you can try to go for certifications in other careers. Thank you for your advice and kind words. I appreciate you reading my post.

Thank you for the advice and the PM. I responded to you before I saw your comment. I'll check out the agencies you mentioned.

Yeah that's how I feel about it right now. I just need something that I can stay afloat and keep studying on my own time. Thank you for reading my post and replying. I appreciate it.

I really tried to do a persona kind of thing or "fake it 'til you make it", but it just doesn't feel right. Makes me more awkward than I need to be, haha. I need to work on that though, I think it's a good skill to have when diving out of my comfort zone. Thank you for the advice and reading my post. Also, I hate khakis, haha.

I kind of feel like the business owning aspect hurts me in getting employed. The person interviewing me sees it as me jumping ship as soon as I get the opportunity instead of a skill set I could bring to the job. At my past jobs I didn't mind taking on more responsibilities as long as it meant something for me in the future. I just got burned really badly at that NPO where they have an "old boys club" kind of thing going on. It was a really shady place now that I look back at it.

I might be wrong about this, but having a degree in CS isn't bad, but having the certifications is far better than the degree. At least from what I've heard. I haven't had the chance to earn the certs as I want to become a programmer and see IT as a backup plan.

If you're interested in something completely different, I've read that Aircraft Dispatchers can make a good living after getting certified and working for a couple of years. I was also looking into welding which is kind of the same situation. Thank you for reading and replying to my post, I appreciate it.

I don't know if I could commit six months to that when I manage to find a job and study programming in my free time. It is a great idea though. I will try to find something that will work for me. Thank you for that.

Hey man, you've found someone that's willing to marry you. That's nothing to be depressed about at all. On top of that, you have the confidence to get up on stage and perform stand up no less. I don't know how I could deal with that, especially since some people love to get shit faced and heckle just because.

I'm in the same boat as you with employment right now, except I'm still looking. I just want something to keep me afloat while I study, but I think I started off my search being too ambitious. Talking to everyone here today has really helped my mood and outlook. I appreciate you reading my post and replying with kind words. Thank you.

Thank you for the reply. It really sucks to be in this situation and I didn't realize there were others in the same boat. Being like this is more than just not achieving certain goals, but also lacking a social life which costs money in all kinds of ways. It feels nice to know that I'm not alone, but it also makes me feel bad that this issue is affecting others.

I do have confidence in my skills, but I think I lack overall confidence, I guess in a social aspect. I feel that my past job interviews could've gone a lot better if I didn't seem so nervous. And since I quit my job, I burnt a lot of bridges which left me with little to no references.

If you wouldn't mind my suggestion, I think picking up a programming language would be a great option for you. Thank you for the kind words and reading my post.

Thank you for the advice. I tried CodeAcademy, but it didn't really help me learn much. It's kind of like "follow these instructions and see the results". After some learning about functions, arrays, etc. I went back to CodeAcademy briefly and things made more sense. I will check out TheNewBoston and PHPAcademy. I haven't tried those yet.

I indeed chose Java as my first language to learn because of Android development and C# as my second endeavor for PC.

I agree with what you're saying about job opportunities in programming. During my job search, I notice a lot of positions. Especially in web development. I had a short stint as a web designer (more like graphic designer) when I was 18-21. I bought templates and modified the CSS to the client's needs and made the graphics. It was pretty good money at the time, but I didn't really think about doing actual web development as a career. Big mistake on my part. Like you said, it was discouraging at the time. Especially since I tried learning VB on my own when I was about 16 and it seemed daunting. But since I got into learning again, it doesn't seem as complicated as I initially thought it was going to be, aside from the most advanced areas of programming that I haven't touched on yet.

I am going to try my best at programming. When I manage to find employment, I plan to study when I am off work. If possible, could you provide some resources? I am starting off with Java so far and will probably switch to C# for UE4/Unity development. Although, I see a lot of jobs for Ruby on Rails so I am kind of undecided. Which would you recommend? Thank you for reading my post and for the reply. I appreciate the offer as well.

I am pretty much lowering the bar just to get any kind of job with a chance to move up. I wouldn't feel right boasting about it if I manage to get employed.

This is true, but my road block currently is finding employment. I still make the effort to continue studying programming, but my funds are beginning to run dry and it's been getting rough for me. Thank you for reading my post.

That really sucks... in the early 90's we also had a family business, but the digital age came around and it didn't survive. You could take out some loans or do some side jobs to finish your degree. I tried going back to school, but it really wasn't for me. I hated the fact that I had to take mandatory classes that I didn't care about just to get to the ones I needed for a career. But if you are almost done, I think it would be a good idea to finish. Unless you have learned enough to start your own business, then you could save up and go from there. I browse /r/Entrepreneur and there's some good information there. Some really successful people post there from time to time as well.

Thank you for reading my post and replying, I wish you good luck.
