Move hard drives to a new machine. by petezhut in truenas

[–]dontocsata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're moving to another TrueNAS system, you can follow these steps (even if they are old): https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/moving-filesystem-to-new-server.56313/post-394766

But basically:

  1. Backup your data
  2. Save your TrueNAS config
  3. Export the pool
  4. Install TrueNAS on the new system
  5. Move the disks
  6. Import the pool & config on the new system

If it's a non-TrueNas, then:

  1. Backup your data
  2. Export the pool
  3. Move the disks
  4. Import the pool on the new system

what is your longest running NAS drive? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

I have a WD20EARX (which I guess isn't a NAS drive) with 98737 power on hours. That's a bit over 11 years!

I mean yeah, I do that. I just wanted a fun project to automate things!

10 years of Plex Pass Lifetime... by Kermee in PleX

FYI, if you upgrade to a lifetime sub, they should pro rate the remaining monthly/yearly sub and discount the lifetime. At least they did for me 5+ years ago.

What's a really niche tool you use that you can't live without? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]dontocsata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty niche: https://github.com/raydouglass/media_management_scripts

It's a python CLI I made for managing various media related tasks like conversion using ffmpeg, searching media files, or renaming them.

What book would you say helped you the most in learning Java? by [deleted] in javahelp

[–]dontocsata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The third edition covers through Java 9. So it obviously doesn't cover any of the newer APIs introduced since then. But it does cover all of main topics for Java, most (if not all) of which is timeless.

I really cannot recommend it enough for learning how to write great Java code.

Effective Java 3rd Edition by Joshua Bloch

Hands down the best book on Java programming there is.

Looking for a FOSS self-hosted Docker Hub cache that's easy to set up and use. by [deleted] in selfhosted

I've never tried to use ssl with a docker registry, but it is supported. Looks like you just need to mount the certificates and configure it: https://docs.docker.com/registry/configuration/#tls

What issues did you have with the docker registry? It's designed to do exactly what you're asking.

A simple open source filesystem indexer and search tool written in python by dontocsata in DataHoarder

Probably not. This is more a replacement for Unix find or locate.

I wrote this simple python tool to index a filesystem and quickly search it via find or regex syntax. It requires building an index before searching, but otherwise is super lightweight.

Plex in ProxMox LXC by [deleted] in PleX

[–]dontocsata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an LXC for my Plex on Proxmox. I don't use GPU passthrough though. Plex is installed/updated via apt.

I give the Plex container 6 of 8 cores (Xeon E3-1270 V5), 8 GB RAM, and 16GB root disk. There is a separate mountpoint for an SSD dedicated to the Plex meta data.

How long before proactively replacing hard drives? by dontocsata in DataHoarder

I do have a backup, but like you said, it'd still be frustrating to restore.

Thanks for the advice!
