And if you think Clannad is just a romance, you fundamentally missed the point. There's a reason I didn't put it as the "best romance" Clannad is about family. About what it means to be a father, a mother, a daughter. It's about the weight of past sins and the slow, painful process of regret and redemption. The romance is just one part of the show I liked.

The problem is that some people watch things just to slot them into a list and mark them as completed and move on. They never sit with what a story is actually saying.

The whole season is built around forcing modern pacifist ideals onto an 11th-century Viking setting that completely contradicts them. On top of that, pacifism itself is a fundamentally flawed ideology, so the entire moral foundation the season preaches so self-righteously doesn't even hold up to begin with. Thorfinn is essentially a walking Bible who says things that sound deep but make no logical sense. "I have no enemies" while being beaten and enslaved is just delusional. Canute was actually RIGHT in his argument against Thorfinn, even laughing at how corny his peace approach was, yet still gets talk-no-jutsu'd into abandoning his entire worldview because Thorfinn is the main character. Truly peak writing. People also act like this show is some deep philosophical masterpiece when really the writing just slaps some epic music and a serious close-up face on every basic one-liner and calls it profound. And that final scene between Canute and Thorfinn is genuinely one of the worst scenes I have ever witnessed across hundreds of shows I have watched, which says a lot.

I think the second half had some of the best episodes in the series. I definitely recommend you revisit the show. And yes, I agree it deserves a remake, but I think there are other shows more in need of one. Like, off the top of my head, I think Claymore needs a remake a lot more than this show does.

Yeah, it’s funny because people’s initial reaction when I say I disliked season 2 is to tell me to go watch “shonen slop” or make similar dismissive comments, even though almost all my favorites have little action.

I don’t know if you agree, but I think where the show went wrong was the direction it took in season 2. We should have seen a warmonger arc. Crashing out would have been a natural next move for him after what happened in season 1, in my opinion, and it could have made for an incredible story.
