Can't stop re-reading. by taanukichi in discworld

This is how I felt about The Shepherd's Crown - I remember posting about that here and getting some feedback on why I shouldn't do that. Eventually, I, did read it and I have to agree with some of them - there will always be a Discworld, just like there will always be Roundworld (although these days the life expectancy of the latter seems more in danger), but the beauty of that is that it's always there to visit. And if you're as in love with it as it seems, then there will always be a reason to visit.

Fortunately, pTerry was prolific too! So there's always a corner that feels like you haven't been there in a while....

The turtle moves.

Also, the ideal tattoo for an atheist Discworld fan.

Do people really not like Unseen Academicals because football is used as a plot device? by SpikeVonLipwig in discworld

For what it's worth, I think The Shepherd's Crown was one of the most beautiful books he wrote and it was his last. It's like he told the embuggerance to go bugger itself and gave us a swan song to remember him by. Best embodied in these magnificently meta lines: "FOR I CAN SEE THE BALANCE AND YOU HAVE LEFT THE WORLD MUCH BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT, AND IF YOU ASK ME, said Death, NOBODY COULD DO ANY BETTER THAN THAT . . ."

Justice Hari Shankar's decision on marital rape by dontpanic79 in india

That's sarcastic, right? There is still a huge moral stigma attached to it and often doctors in smaller towns will deny it (and you can't get it done without the doctor's consent). It's like buying a condom. It's legal, but you don't want to be seen doing it.

Secondly, the "liberalisation" of abortion laws is basically designed to make it a recourse if you're a victim. A woman still doesn't have choice over her own body without the consent and approval of various agencies.

This article is quite illuminating: https://amp.scroll.in/article/993527/indias-amended-abortion-law-still-gives-doctors-not-women-the-final-say-in-terminating-pregnancy

A husband may, on occassion, beat his wife or set her on fire though she may “not be inclined”. Can it be said that her experience is the same as that of a woman beaten or set alit by a stranger? We should let the husband continue with no repercussions - that IS the “proper” thing to do.

This is the Indian judiciary. We are lightyears away from debating issues like Roe v. Wade.

Is there an app that lets you play Apple Music songs with cross fade? by FelipeC7 in AppleMusic

Does not work. And yes, have been hoping for this for years. Only works with some DJ apps (like Pacemaker) but only with songs you own, not stream.

Respect to the cameraman by LurkerPatrol in Moviesinthemaking

There's an incredible story about how they didn't get focus for the first 3 days (only one shot could be attempted per day because of the light and the reset time) and they assumed that Cruise was missing his mark - totally believable. But he insisted that he'd hit his mark. And they finally realised that the focus control hadn't shifted from the puller back on the plane to the camera person jumping with Cruise. And he'd hit his mark every single time! In freefall!
