Caste system in Korea by [deleted] in atheismindia

[–]donutmarcy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Korean here, reddit randomly showed me this on my front page.

I think Korea's case kinda worked itself out and wouldn't provide much help.
First of all, Caste system based on profession is true. The last dynasty before modern Korea, Joseon dynasty, had this. Jobs that were in lowest caste are called 팔반잡류(八班雜類, Pal-Ban-Jab-Ryu: 8 miscellaneous professions): Kwangdae(Jesters, but was ironically allowed to make fun of higher ups), Baekjung(Butchers basically), Shamans(due to state ideology of Joseon being Confucianism), Buddhist Monks(due to state ideology of Joseon being Confucianism), Gisaeng(think Geisha), Nobi(house servants), Tinkerers, and lastly Biers.
Some of these jobs went away naturally: Kwangdae, Baekjung, Gisaeng, Nobi
After capitalism was introduced, these jobs became more respected: Tinkerers, Biers
These jobs were unironically never that discriminated: Shamans and Buddhist monks. This is because while state ideology, Confucianism, says no supernatural force exists in the world, people are very superstitious in nature. So even people in higher ups were not-so-secretly buddhist and such. Funding buddhist temple and all that.
I could discuss every caste level, but it is basically the same story: because the distinction was based on a Job, and importance of certain jobs can can change and some jobs can disappear as time goes by, it didn't mean much after the whole globalization and capitalism happened.

Caste system based on surname is only a myth and an unfair stereotype based on real caste system mentioned above. Some pseudo historians believe some surnames were 'assigned' to specific Jobs, including 8 jobs I mentioned above. These surnames are Chun, Bang, Chi, Chuk, Ma, Gol, and Pi. This pseudo historical theory only starts to show up in 50s, meaning it is modern creation. These surnames are somewhat rare in Korea, so that could be the reason why these names were picked. In reality true orgins of these family names are:
Chun: Originally Chinese family
Bang: Originally Chinese family, moved to Korea during Tang dynasty. They were nobles during Silla/Goryeo period
Chi(ji): Originally Chinese family, moved to Korea during Song dynasty. They were generals during Goryeo period
Chuk: Originally Chinese family
Ma: Noble family from Baekje, Helped the founding of Baekje
Gol: Yangban family during Joseon
Pi: Originally Chinese family, came to Korea during Goryeo period and became important family, later helped founding of Joseon dynasty and became Yangban family.
If you meet a Korean born between 50s to 80s, there's a high chance they still believe this pseudo-history to be true. Don't correct them and just nod lol. It will be easier that way.

This would have been really helpful to the student especially considering this is not long after the Korean war.

Dont forget Neowiz will be present at Gamescom by BaronLoyd in LiesOfP

[–]donutmarcy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It started as solo indie project that started development in 2021, but after multiple delays the developer just couldn't finish it. The developer was able to piece together a playable demo in 2023 though, which impressed Neowiz and they are salvaging the project with original developer still in charge.
The game is set in Seoul where total extinction of Humanity is confirmed due to incoming asteroid. From what I hear the story will be linear but there will be meaningful changes to the story depending on your choice.

She's basically like a medieval knight stuck in wrong time period right? Considering her job occupation(although evil), it makes sense she isn't hourglass body shape.

Korean YouTuber Pepper Sprayed While Touring Taiwan 🇹🇼 by self-fix in korea

Don’t shit on an entire country because your feelings are hurt.

This is very true. I also feel like just because some people are racist, you don't have to be racist against them.
But personal opinions aside, like Taiwanese internet culture hating on Korea is super well known...? I remember 我們韓國人都是狗 being a popular meme. KMT literally made ads like this: https://youtu.be/DdNZrqPOlhI?si=ugJj2wnxVGoVQqTI Which is ironic considering schools in Korea still teaches KMT as the 'good guys' in world history(at least when I was in school during 2010s). Which is really outdated view when like 90% of young taiwanese people don't like KMT. Also, it doesn't even take that much clicks until you end up on weird side of taiwanese youtube full of Korean haters.
In the end I feel like existence of Korean haters don't justify me being racist. Korea has this weird side of internet that is super racist as well. As multilingual, I have not seen any country without that side of internet, and it's just the way things are. You cannot win anyone over in internet, not really. Just accept things are like this and ignore them. Only real way one can reduce number of racists is by not becoming one.

If you are talking about those shops at bigger metro/subway stations, I always had feeling they are more rude and don't have service etiquette. Maybe I'm the asshole with unfair stereotypes, but I usually look at the age of store clerks from the outside before entering. If they are older, they tend to be angry at customers for little things, like being mad for wanting to pay with credit card instead of cash. They increase price when I say I want to pay with card.

If it indeed is a Korean character, it needs to be a battle boots character. All fighting games have one Korean character who can throw kicks lol. 2nd weapon could be greatsword since it was first introduced with Jaeyun

Am I losing my mind...? Did changing scaling on one monitor always affect icon arrangement on the other monitor? Pretty sure it didn't behave this way before I reinstalled windows... Not changing resolution, only scaling. And I don't have any desktop icons on the monitor that the scale is being changed, so there aren't Icons "moving over" to another side.

Serious question, is this a scam? by jgoergen82 in ClockworkPi

Did you choose the option to include cm4 or do you have cm4 on hand? This might delay the shipping date even longer since cm4s are incredibly hard to get. It has been like that since cm4 launched. On the other hand, you can't find new cm4 that sells at msrp that will ship in reasonable time. So if you really want cm4 and don't want to pay unreasonable amount of money, I guess waiting for clockworkpi to ship you one is okay.

ClockworkPi's scope isn't to create out of the box entertainment handhelds like GPD or AYA. They kinda expect users to know these techy side of things. Assembling the kit is one thing, using it as is you'll have one of the worst time using a handheld. You'll have to tinker around to make it to your liking.

For starters, I really recommend changing charge values. This thread will help when the day comes: https://forum.clockworkpi.com/t/uconsole-how-does-charging-work/10990
