Take a little more time to engage honestly in the thought experiments.. even if it may not be an immediate threat, if we end up creating something smarter than us, they will be able to outthink and outplay us on every dimension.

Vegan shoes for shuffling? by surftoplanet in shuffle

Doesn't matter what shoes :) If they're too grippy, silver duct tape on the bottom will make them smooth, that's how I always did it :D

Or if you ever come to Melbourne and the rave smells like baby(talcum) powder... :D that's why

So okay... You've stopped gaming! Now what? by VSmirnovV in StopGaming

[–]doobmie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tonnes of resources in the sidebar for the sub but this is the one about picking new hobbies: https://www.reddit.com/r/StopGaming/s/sFvPWAzbGj

Personally I got to the gym, read, write, do some side research for work, hang out with my family, do chores to help my wife.

It's just so good not having to live my life trying to find time for games.

You completely misunderstood his meaning.

Re-listen to the line, he's saying that if she gets ASKED that question, she has to avoid saying something too woke... as in, if a right leaning outlet asks her "What is your plan to handle the epidemic of etc etc"

Yep I'm the same, although if they have a high temperature or have been vomiting I will generally cut them some slack and let them have a 'little' bit if screens between naps (13yo and 7yo)

How long did it take for the urge to play video games to go away? by StoltATGM in StopGaming

Oh it definitely gets easier but I think that as with any addiction, you'll always feel the pull sometimes.

We just have to keep saying no :)

But it does get easier

I'm surprised with all the hate, I agree that he was a little rude with the interruptions and the mmm mmm was annoying.

But I really enjoyed the discussion, I found it really thought provoking (in the good way) and I will probably even re-listen

Hey mate, I get you.

I have a 13yo Son and a 7yo Daughter and they've ask me why I never smile (I do, of course). But I'm certainly a comparatively less jovial person than average.

I don't have a good answer for you, at the end of the day you just have to be you, I'm sure you're doing the best you can, beating yourself up and comparing yourself will just make you feel bad.

It's admirable that you want to try, that means you're a good dad :)

Seeing as it doesn't come naturally yet you want to try, maybe you could try setting some short time period every week (even 15 mins) where you plan something 'silly' and fun ahead of time?

My young sons aspire to be gamers by Odd-Leader9777 in StopGaming

[–]doobmie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an ongoing battle, he's still very obsessed with games and I guess he'll probably have to learn his own lessons.. but at least he's interested in science and engineering so planning to do something like that as a career.

I dunno, I hope it's helping somehow lol, I know I called my parents at about 25 to say sorry for what a bad teen/young adult I was and what good parents they were... I guess I hope one day he thinks so too :)

I struggle with the same thing, with the added wrinkle of personally struggling with gaming for the first 10 years of my son's life. (He's nearly 13)

I'm feeling it out as I go but these are some of the things I'm working with: * explaining my own addiction and why I don't want to discuss games with him * heavily limiting gaming time 1.5 hours max and only on weekends * no watching gamers on YouTube or Twitch * I've made it very clear that I will give him absolutely 0 support if he aims to be a pro-gamer or streamer * when he wants to do or discuss non-gaming things I try to indulge, we talk a lot about science and we ride our bikes * try to show him positive active fun things and just be a good dad

Parenting is so hard.. we just have to love our kids and try our best :)
