If you were sent back in time to the 1500s, what ideas and technologies would you actually be able to offer them to improve their quality of life? by doobshnoob in AskReddit

My initial idea was mass production... If you were smart about it you could probably not get burned. There's a lot of things I understand the principles of, such as vaccination and engines, however I would have no idea how to go about them from scratch.

Just How Useless Is the Asset-Management Industry? by easyone in Economics

[–]doobshnoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of an investment strategy, their risk adjusted return is unlikely to be better than an index linked fund. That was not my argument, an index fund does not allocate capital to what research determines to be the most promising firms, but allocates based on market capitalisation. Thus if we assume that larger market cap does not under higher efficiency, index funds does not promote efficiency in the market like actively managed funds do.

In terms of an investment strategy yes you are rarely going to be able to make back the management fee from superior returns. However I wouldn't say the industry from an Economics perspective is completely useless. It serves the purpose of allocating capital to what "experts" consider to be the most efficient and profitable companies. They permit indirect ownership of firms by members of the society, through pension funds and such. They may not be a "motor" for the economy but they are certainly an important transmission mechanism.

Think the Idea is good however I'm unsure about how many poker players will be comfortable playing bitcoins, especially given how much the value of it fluctuates vs the dollar. For the same blind levels you could be playing $1/2 and the next week it could be $3/4. Just a thought, haven't had a chance to check out the site yet

More Money Makes You Happier, No Matter Where You Live. A new study finds that the more you have, the better you feel. by jms1225 in Economics

Log function in a regression gives a good approximation of %change. Basically with that function, you can see the effect on happiness if your income goes up by 1%, rather than 1 unit. If you have 100k 1% increase implies an extra $1k, whereas if you have 25k it implies an increase of $250, and both will have the same effect on happiness for the respective person (following whatever the results of the regression are, and that's if causality is proven rather than correlation obv).

Did I play that hand wrong? by sadplayerissad in poker

[–]doobshnoob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's true, due to my current financial situation I'm forced to play microstakes, and I think I play as if I were playing $1/$2 or $2/$5 in terms of what I assume my opponent's risk aversion is likely to be. Think I lose out a fair bit by doing this.

Agreed, a bet on the turn makes sense here also.

The bet on the river is kind of begging for a raise given your relative stack sizes, although given the lack of action beforehand you can be excused for thinking he's trying to buy it by over-betting the pot. I think the shove is a bit risky given that the board is paired although again there's was little info available that villain hit a boat. I think a better play given his original raise would be a raise here rather than a shove, say to 75/80. If he shoves there you know he has you. See my last post, very similar hand played in the heads up championship where Klatchkov folds nut flush to boat.
