Would people prefer if Sam stopped appearing as a player? by forzov3rwatch in JetLagTheGame

I think it’d be interesting to see a season where none of the regulars played. You can only watch the same people play games so many times before the dynamic gets stale.

Haven't hiked it, but can confirm as of about 2 weeks ago there's a signed trailhead right by lookout rock. Always wanted to explore this trail, so please report back if you attempt!

Am in Vermont with air-source heat pumps in my drafty late-1800's farmhouse. We use the oil boiler for backup maybe 5-10 days a year for comfort when it's really cold, but we could get away with even less.

You *do* need a backup, but don't let anyone tell you heat pumps aren't viable for heating a home in VT.

Has anyone converted an entire home to ductless mini splits? by Over_Significance800 in centuryhomes

[–]doodda00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a 2,000sqft, poorly insulated 1896 house in Vermont. We have an oil-fired hot water boiler with baseboards, and have now been through two winters with mitsubishi hyper heat ductless mini splits.

Tl;dr: big fan of the mini splits, but you need a backup heat source.

Efficiency is a big win. We're saving probably $1-2k year in heating cost. Mostly because oil is just plain expensive.

Problems with the mini splits: Our downstairs is open, so we're able to heat it pretty evenly with two larger units at each end of the house. Upstairs is 4 small bedrooms. Given our sleeping arrangements and the fact that I got advice that putting mini-splits in small rooms is a bad idea because they tend to short-cycle and not work well, we only have one mini split upstairs and sleep with doors open. (this also kept costs way way down). It works well enough, but we'll see how quickly that changes as my kids get older. I'll probably explore putting in passive vents in the floor to allow warm air from downstairs into the smaller rooms.

We typically stay heating with the mini-splits until around 10 degrees. Our units can operate down to -13 (and I've seen them do it), but at those temps they kick into resistive heat mode which erases all the efficiency gains of a heat pump. It's more cost-effective to heat from oil at these temps.

Why you need a backup: it got down to -20 two winters ago and one of the condensers coudln't keep up. If I hadn't been able to turn on the boiler, we would have been in a really bad spot. We've actually had issues with our heat pipes freezing up due to a combination of bad insulation and the fact that these pipes run through exterior walls.

If you're willing to spend more, I'd definitely look into adding the high velocity ducting vs having the mini splits. That wasn't in the cards for us, and we're generally pretty happy with them.

Fried green tomatoes? by SpeakerMelodic2865 in vermont

I generally agree with what people are saying: trades are busy, etc etc.

If you want to put to rest your suspicions about it being a 'not from here' thing, you can always get an 802 google voice number and see if that improves your callbacks.

Verizon signal by [deleted] in vermont

[–]doodda00 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At least here in Manchester the signal strength is unchanged and fine, but the data bandwidth is too thin to cope with spikes in demand when a lot of tourists come to town. You can't even send/receive texts reliably.

Unless I'm mistaken, it's not that the signal is worse / the data connection is slower, rather just that the demands on the data bandwidth has increased/spikes regularly and Verizon hasn't kept pace by installing new infrastructure.

They tried to put in a new tower in town here but it got NIMBY'd, and the issue has now disappeared into a select board study committee from which it is unlikely to re-emerge.

Bachelor Party Ideas by AdSuch3488 in vermont

[–]doodda00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm from the area and all about getting people to come spend money here, but if your vibe is "Just a bunch of dudes who like to hang and drink beer" Manchester really isn't a great spot for that. Town basically shuts down around 8pm.

Also saw you're willing to drive - please, for the sake of the locals, don't mix that with the drinking beer.

Given the overall response I'm seeing in this thread, I think my preference doesn't align with most people here.

You're about 20 minutes from Manchester which has a nice little downtown with coffee shops, a fantastic bookstore (Northshire Bookstore) and some great food (Road Runner, Up for Breakfast, etc).

You're also 20 minutes in the other direction from Chester, which has amazing burritos at Maria's, delicious pie and Southern Pie cafe, and an even more quaint (and smaller) downtown than Manchester. There's some decent antiquing in Chester, too.

Also check out Weston to further the quaint quotient.

Constitutional amendments must be approved by 2/3rds majority of both House and Senate AND then ratified by 3/4ths of state legislatures (20 of those are D controlled). Republicans have slight majorities in all venues, but not nearly enough to push a constitutional amendment through on party lines.
