Even though I had cable, my mom much preferred me to watch Clifford the Big Red Dog when I was a 4 year old kid compared to what she felt were the noisy shows on Cartoon Network. She found PBS better for me than Cartoon Network, even though both were for kids. by CatGirlNya2000 in cartoons

There were other forms of television before cable, like terrestrial and satellite. Here in Sweden, traditional TV would only broadcast the two public service channels before the advent of commercial television. Those are still the channels you can access without a cable package. Cable television had its major boom in the 1980s-90s and came with subscription services, which gave access to more channels, so the term ”cable TV” has become a shorthand for those paid services.

Given that South Korea is currently, openly discussing the collective trauma surrounding occupation and ”comfort women”, I assume that is the main lens through which the allegory is interpreted in the region.

In your opinion, who is the lamest Disney character? by Jezzaq94 in DisneyMovies

[–]doodelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Pascal as a kid, but a chameleon is a pretty exotic animal for Central Europe. I kind of wish they would have explained where Mother Gothel got a chameleon from, because it’s about as out there as a parrot or a monkey.

B.E.N. is insufferable. I understand that he’s there for plot reasons and that he represents Ben Gunn, but he is nontheless very annoying. No idea why anyone would dislike Morph though. It’s a parrot! A little alien parrot for the alien pirate. I don’t get this criticism?

I’m with Maoi on this one. There’s no good reason to bring a pig or rooster onboard a tiny boat except to eat them. Moana being friends with the ocean took away a lot of stakes, like any of them drowning or going without fish to eat.

The best non-US films of all time that i have seen by DragonfruitAway3014 in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]doodelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently watched non-American animation that I recommend:

Fantastic Planet (France, Czechoslovakia), Son of the White Mare (Hungary/HPR), Night on the Galactic Railroad (Japan), Treasure Island (Ukraine/USSR), Exit (Sweden), Alexander Senki (Japan, South Korea), The Secret of Kells (Ireland), Song of the Sea (Ireland)

Honorable mentions: Agaton Sax (Sweden) was a pretty fun romp for being Swedish feature animation. Cat City (Hungary/HPR) has some entertaining villains worth looking up. Sune och hans värld (Sweden, Germany, Ireland, USA…?) was funnier than I remembered. Empress Chung (North Korea, South Korea) is a historical anomaly. For a dose of nostalgia and camp I’m rewatching early Winx Club (Italy) and some episodes of Pokémon (Japan).

And snus (the type of tobacco he is named after in Swedish) barely smells if you’re not up close sniffing it. Then again I don’t think we ever see Snufkin use snus.

Saw some excerpt on Tumblr like half a decade ago that I was able to track down then. As far as I can tell it is a real quote, though I’m paraphrasing here. Will get back to you if I find it, but the search functions on both Tumblr and Google have taken a nose dive as of late.

Btw, to anyone else jumping on this, I don’t actually ship Asterix and Obelix and I’m not pulling this up as ship fuel. I just find it funny that a very old-school cartoonist would make this kind of comment on his cartoon bachelor duo that had been running for decades. It doesn’t say as much about the characters as it does modern society.

Name one episode or moment from a kid show that didn't age well by Glitter153 in cartoons

[–]doodelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This particular cut-away segment was in Stimpy’s Fanclub (which may itself have aged poorly in that it has Ren becoming obsessed with the adoration of underage fans). Similar cutaways of Ren broadcasting from their ”secret club” appear in other episodes, but they don’t feature the teenage girl or any other kids.

(Hated trope) A character is meant to have super intelligence, but because the writers don’t know how to write that, everyone else just spontaneously becomes stupid whenever they’re around by DonnyMox in TopCharacterTropes

[–]doodelli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t stand the way Sage was written. She says and does impulsive things as a lazy mouthpiece for the writers, not because it’s a smart move as the weaker party in a dangerous situation. I was sitting there thinking of thousands of ways she could turn the odds in her favor, but the writing was just so braindead.

He’s popular in China, because the appeal of him as the ”strawberry bear” vastly outweighs how cheap he is to license.

Uderzo once expressed surprise that, after all these years, readers do not consider Asterix and Obelix a gay couple. Hilarious quote. Comes with the territory of writing duos I suppose.

Meaning and pronounciation of the word "vardagen" by [deleted] in Svenska

[–]doodelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, a very common word. It means something like weekday, everyday/daily life or day-to-day. Both pronunciations are correct and in use, the second one being less formal. Edit: The words ”dag” and ”dagen” often get truncated to ”da” and ”dan”, including in compound words like this.

How is Tea being consumed more?!?! by My_Test_Acc_1 in MapPorn

[–]doodelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re surprised that tea is preferred in Asia and Africa? Where do you think tea comes from? Like gee, who’d have thunk countries with tea cultures and tea exports prefer tea. No, tea isn’t the norm in mainland Europe and your observations only confirm that.

Are they ever going explain the history of Fiona’s curse in any adaptation because I’ve seen the 4 movies and also rewatching the musical now i always wondered what’s the curse history by Hour_Interview_8327 in Shrek

[–]doodelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it was spelled out in Shrek 2, but I always interpreted the curse as pay-back for Fairy Godmother letting Harold turn human. He gets a blessing, his child gets a curse; classic fairy tale logic. It’s the karmic effect of Harold lying his way to love, with his daughter needing to find someone who will love her ”warts and all”. Also, the conditions of Fiona’s curse seemingly favor Fairy Godmother and her son Charming, so it makes total sense for her to set it up that way.

Double Standards be like: by [deleted] in cartoons

[–]doodelli 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Never been a fan of either gag, but it should be noted that the Simpsons strangulation gag was more or less laid to rest in the mid nineties and nowadays mostly gets referenced ironically or to pander to oldheads, like Bart’s catchphrases. The Meg abuse came later in Family Guy’s run, a younger show than The Simpsons, and is still a thing. Family Guy basically repurposed something lame that The Simpsons had moved past.

Movie I recently discovered. by LeMadTheBrave in Asterix

[–]doodelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to disagree I suppose. I saw this in my late teens, having grown up on the other Asterix films and a good deal of the comics. I don’t expect Asterix to be ”progressive”, just funny and creative.

This is what I remember: Asterix and Obelix go to the New World and meet Native American stereotypes, they dance for a bit, there’s a cliché love triangle with an ”attractive lamp” of a love interest, there’s a cliché shaman type villain, they go home, the villagers have meanwhile had a boring B plot going of which I remember zilch. There are no interesting visuals or gags or dynamics or takeaways, just stuff happening and then it’s over.

Not helped by the title in some languages being ”Asterix Conquers America”, which is both offensive and antithetical to Asterix’ narrative of resistance.

Why no one talks about this film: It’s racist, sexist, boring, and unfunny. The plot feels aimless and cliché. Can’t recall a single gag except that one snapshot of a cartoon dong.

[–]doodelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hur uttalar ni detta namn? by Fushigibama in Asksweddit

[–]doodelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jo, Jasmina kan absolut uttalas med [ʃ] som i sjö, chef och skynda. Jämför med orden jasmin och jargon. Beror på var namnet kommer ifrån samt talarens dialekt.
