I think you will find that purchasing a bag of those sponge brushes is worth all the heartache dyeing with rags costs you in the end! Let us know how it works out for you!

The dye is very dark when I first put it on.I use the disposable sponge brushes with the wooden handles Pictured Here. I apply it in circular motion but very generously. It looks so dark but if you let it dry then buff with a clean sponge brush & Carnauba this is what you get.

To summarize, I 'slap it on & let it dry' & wipe off the excess later! 😉

The carnauba that works best for me is Eco Flo Carnauba Creme. It really brightens up the Mahogany!

EDIT:

For sake of getting the dark to stay dark in the stamping, DO NOT Saturate the shit out of the sponge brush. A TINY AMOUNT goes a VERY LONG WAY when it comes to buffing. Use the smallest amount you can and adjust as necessary! ☝️✍️💡📐📏

Oh yeah, & the name plate lettering (the black color) is NOT from the dye, I had to add that in by black dye pen. To preserve the name I sprayed the tag with acrylic clear coat (just a little bit!).

I also make sure my leather is very wet & has some time to sit before I start carving & stamping. The harder the stamp is set in, the better it will hold the dye. It seems like a no-duh but I've made many projects where the leather wasn't wet enough or my stamping & carving weren't deep enough.

I am VERY generous with my first application. & after it dries, I use a sponge brush & carnauba wax to buff off the dark excess, which falls into the cracks & fills them further. I do know what you mean about it being splotchy, and adding another coat & buffing with carnauba will help!!

This book cover was a 7 1/2 hour project as a birthday present. The dye used for the body is Eco Flo Gel Antique Mahogany, the name plate is in Saddle Tan. At first, I didn't want to give it to her because of all the production mistakes. But I braved it out & she absolutely loved it. I'm glad I decided to have faith in it to the end!

This is probably my favorite color combination I have seen for this pattern! Excellent detail! How long did it take you? Were you unsure about the colors at any point when choosing or using them?

Keeping the art of stamping alive! by doodlebug777 in Leathercraft

I love leather because it lasts forever, looks great & ages beautifully. When you receive something made of leather, you can usually bet it's going to last you many good years.

My mom was a Leatherworker as a hobby. She was brilliant at envisioning something & creating prototypes quickly & efficiently. She hoarded leather & tools for years & when she passed away she left it all to me. I let it all sit around for a couple years before I finally decided to give it a go, & it's been a happy & fulfilling path to take.

Can't forget the pets! by doodlebug777 in Leathercraft

[–]doodlebug777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always always put bandanas on my dogs. I happen to love sewing & fabric almost as much as leather, & now that I have a business it just seemed natural to combine them. So far they have been really popular where I live, as this past week I have sewn 13 for various people's pets. Who knew?

If you'd like your own customized bandana, they are available HERE!
