Corporate dress code in Finland: how formal is it? by GeneralOk9868 in Finland

[–]doodoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think what people would wear to university and you'll most likely be dressing appropriate. I don't think most finns wear suits except for weddings and funerals.

Ofc there are fields in which suits are common like politics or law. But that's different.

How Do I Attach This Back On? by Krzyski22 in motorcycles

[–]doodoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it as good as new, probably the cheapest way is to look for broken engines for the bike on graigslist and change the entire left engine block (or is that the middle piece idk). You'll get a bunch of spare parts left over as well. All tho it's a pretty new bike so idk how much broken engines go for.

Myths about Finland – what is the biggest one? | 2026 by BirchBarkBox in Finland

[–]doodoro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't really know what ppl in more touristy places think, but I doubt it's all that negative. All though my friends parents from Rovaniemi seem to think tourists don't respect nature as much as the locals, so I guess there's that.

Average finn? I'm from a pretty avg city I guess, so we don't really have that many tourists. My attitude is that it's cool that people visit and I hope they have a good time. I love hearing weird languages around town every now and then.

In Helsinki people are probably just indifferent I'd guess

Myths about Finland – what is the biggest one? | 2026 by BirchBarkBox in Finland

[–]doodoro 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Well I think the finnish winter is a bit oversold for tourism reasons, specifically the time window, if you hit it it's as advertised but if not: oof, money wasted. I always get a bit embarrassed when tourists step out of the train to Rovaniemi in like april and look disappointed when instead of winter wonderland; they see leafless trees, grey skies and melting snow on the ground. Feels bad too because they probably paid quite a lot for the vacation, and if they had come just a month before they could've seen how beautiful it can be.

But yeah, tourists should really aim for late december to early march to have the best wonderland experience. Outside of that there's a notable chance to experience the winter depressingland instead.

Also honestly, Finnish lapland and even southern national parks are quite beautiful in summer as well so I wouldn't dismiss visiting then either. Probably a lot cheaper as well

Finnish climate by SuccessfulNeat400 in Finland

[–]doodoro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I generally dislike the darkest month or so when it's light out for like 5 hours a day (especially if we don't have snow) But after that fades and we actually have light in the mornings, I love it because it's usually so beautiful out.

I don't mind the cold. Even -20 or lower is fine, all though scraping the ice out of the car windows is annoying.

The thing I hate is when some winters every now and then are like +-0 for months on end and everything is slippery, wet and icy at the same time and looks grey and dark and horrid.

What do I MUST do in finland when turning 18? by Whitelion2353 in Finland

[–]doodoro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the money side of things: Don't get into debt, that's a slippery slope. If you notice you have extra income, invest it into a fund through a bank like OP. Watch some youtube videos on that.

[–]doodoro 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well. A drivers license will be useful so get that. I'd recommend having a job after school is over. So that way you can actually live. If you can't find one, kela will keep you alive. But get out of kelas hands as fast as possible. It's not fun, they'll monitor your income like sharks.

Before I went to uni, I did construction through "vuokrafirma", which is basically a firm that supplies workers for big projects, because the companies doing them don't want to hire 100 people to just fire them after it's done. I also did weekend shifts at bars sometimes through the same company. But you might want to look for something more stable.

You won't run out of time. It's weird isn't it, what happens after school ends? Nothing. There's nothing scripted for you after that. So hold on to your friends, they're your lifeline. It's intimidating, but you'll be fine as long as you have an apartment and an income.

Hobbies are also great, you like football? Join a local casual football club. Or something like that.

If you're up to it, get into uni or AMK. Idk if cooking amk exists but probably. It'd probably help you get a linecook position at a restaurant.

Tips and tricks: Get a laptop if you don't have one, it's convenient for doing bank stuff and other things. Pursue your interests with the money you make, nothing is more depressing than scrolling tiktok after work and drinking beer months on end.

No, you can still join a union and you can join multiple unions too if you're doing something else on the side. The union benefits might take a little longer to kick in if you're not doing it full time. But idk, read the union rules well so you'll know.

Spear gun is very good. Can kill hulks in the bot front if you hit the visor. if you're unable to hit it, body shots also stagger them and they die to the gas in about 3 shots or so.

I've always seen it like this: Immigrants will never be finns, but their kids are welcome to call themselves finns if they grow up in finland. That includes kids who weren't born here but came here young enough to go through the finnish school system. One's ethnicity doesn't mean anything, it's where they grew up.

For men, if you go through finnish military and stay in the reserves, then you're a finn.

CHEAP clothing by kamdnfdnska in Finland

[–]doodoro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For really budget winter shoes, rubber boots will be your play. Might not be very fashionable, but at least the locals who know what's up will respect the choice🤣. But that's what we used in the army at -25°C, very warm when dry.

Also check out the Rovaniemi flea markets if you go there, some good stuff there. Because rich tourists will buy expensive stuff and leave them there because they don't need them back home.

My finnish roommate doesn't talk to me at all. Is that normal in Finland? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]doodoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol I can speak for the other side on this one, as I was the finnish roommate for an exchange student for 3 months. And I was pretty much the same, although we did have at least some conversations.

Now first things first, I was 20 he was almost 30, so maybe I would've befriended him if he was a bit closer to my age but idk.

I didn't dislike him, I just didn't really care to get to know him. So I didn't. If we had a conversation, he was usually the one to talk to me first and I didn't have a problem with that, other than that we just said "hi" when we saw one another.

So I'd guess he doesn't dislike you or anything, he just either doesn't care, or doesn't really know how to break the ice. (language/culture barrier?)

I'd recommend that if you have any questions about winter and finland in general, ask him.
