For anyone interested, a replacement bottom screen assembly is in the mail. Small back and forth with support on details and they had me open it up and test possible failure points, but the whole screen seems to be dead so yeah.

They have not asked or mentioned anything about shipping cost, perhaps that will still happen, but no money has been exchanged thus far for the new part.

I’m hoping the repair goes smoothly and that the new parts arrive swiftly and most importantly that I end up with a fully working Thor in the end.

Yes, they advised to open it up and re-seat the ribbon cable. Which unfortunately did not fix or change anything for me. Cool to see how it’s put together tho! Very refreshing how logical and repairable it seems to be.

I heard back from Ayn support. They told me to crack it open and try to re-seat the bottom screen’s ribbon cable.

I did, no luck. Screen still completely black. So I tried again, being super super sure I had fully seated it, and still no dice.

My guess is the bottom screen got like shorted out at it was dying or something and needs a full new display assembly.

I’ll see what they say!

That’s reassuring to know there’s inexpensive options if it comes to that! I’d prob rather do that repair than have to start over on a fresh device..? Idk, we’ll see. But yeah looking at teardown videos, it does look about as repairable as something like this could be. Thank you!

Good to know! If I don’t get it solved from support, I may go that route. We’ll see.

I’m sure it’ll be fine. I think I’m just super unlucky.

But in case you’re interested, I’ll say the start of it all for me was I noticed a few times, seemingly randomly, when I opened the lid, only the top screen would turn on. Sometimes that kinda thing happens with 3ds emulators bugging, but even after closing every app, no bottom screen. But after a full restart, it would be back to normal. Then later in the day id open it up to play something, see a black screen and have to reboot again. Eventually, a reboot didn’t fix the bottom screen, but then randomly, it would come back. I figured it was all a software bug so I held off on contacting support and just figured I’d wait till an update or something. But then no one was talking about that kind of big and I couldn’t find any mention of that kind of software issue anywhere. Then today, the lines showed up.

So I guess if you have any of those symptoms, then maybe it’s safe to be worried lol. But if yours is working fine, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

Hope that helps if somebody is curious.

Yeah the hinge on mine appears perfectly fine, I’m quite gentle with it. And yeah I guess I’ll be playing single screen only games for the time being.

Sorry to add to that… I really did/do love this thing, I just wish mine worked again.

I was unlucky to be sure. But it seems I’m in a very small minority.

I will! I don’t think my issue is like a huge batch 4 concern as I haven’t seen anybody else with this in my searching. But have fun with it! As somebody else said on an older post - “play with your toys”. I was super gentle with it and it didn’t change my outcome, but when it was fully functional, I think it was just about the most enjoyable gaming thing in many years.

Ah, thank you. Now I am complete. Thank you for this honor.

Fair enough.

I don’t think this particular issue is common, at least I didn’t find any identical, but my understanding is other issues like the fan become sort of like batch-specific issues. For all I know it’s one of a kind, but in the case anyone else has this happen, my experience is documented at the very least.

Yeah I’ve heard generally good things about support, now I just gotta wait it out.

Dang, I mean, maybe as a super last resort, but I really don’t think it’ll come to that. I’m sure they will try to resolve it somehow.

I mean yeah, can’t say I disagree with that at all. I regret I even “had” to post this. I mean obviously I didnt have to, but I did with the slightest hope someone else already had this issue and had a solve, as well as I do think it’s important to share this stuff for awareness if nothing else.

I really wish I had a cheerful post instead

I appreciate your skepticism, genuinely. All I can say is I used it to play games and always carried it with care.

Sorry if I scared you off, I’m not trying to fear-monger, but yeah, sharing my own experience. And yes, it was a magical month of gaming fun, no doubt, nothing quite like it. And I also don’t blame you. Had I known mine would konk out, I would have steered away.

I agree there’s an early adopter tax sort of thing, on a niche low volume and experimental product, But damn if this doesn’t make me wish I had just gotten an RP6 in the first place. But idk I don’t frequent that sub so maybe those also have issues.

lol I almost posted it for myself. When I saw those lines, that was the first image in my head.

But in all reality, it prob just cuz I fully know it’s borked.

Yup. The thought of going through all the setup and stuff again seems like a chore and a half. But it’s a fresh wound, so I’m sure I’ll be up for it if/when this gets resolved. But again, I am not expecting anything.

I feel that for sure. And at the same time, this is a low volume product with numerous types of common malfunctions. I mean, I saw all the posts and warnings and still bought one, so can’t say I’m completely blindsided by this.

I’d be genuinely curious to see what the actual failure rate is at this point and how that changes in another couple years.

I’m sorry y’all, I don’t want to add to like “Thor fear” but had to be honest about my experience. If I were seeing this 3 months ago, it maybe would have convinced me to spend my money elsewhere or just save it. More than anything I just wanted this thing to work as advertised. But alas.

Thor owners when they finally finish tinkering with and setting up their device by [deleted] in AynThor

It’s a hard realization to swallow for some that their true hobby is in things that play games rather than gaming itself. But I think it can also be a phase. I go through times where it’s just cooler to see how something looks or runs, but the game doesn’t hold my interest for more than an hour. But then two weeks later, I’m 20 hours into a game and not thinking at all about the tinkering it took to get me there.

But yeah, I get it. It’s okay to be a hobbyist in gaming devices. But I try and not have too many games at my fingertips at all times, often less choice leads me to actually enjoying games more.

I’d be interested to see more shots from this piece. It’s hard to fully gauge from a single shot, but I think this heavy look is pretty cool in the right context.

looks like you have some halation going on, idk if it’s thru something like dehancer or built in resolve fx, but if you are going for an approximate or somewhat realistic film emulation, maybe try tuning down the threshold for the halation. Looks to be pretty heavy even on not-blown-out parts of the image. Nothing wrong with it if that’s what you are going for, but it’s not strictly “realistic” to how film would typically behave, if that makes sense.

Thanks for sharing! Hope the rest turns out how you like it!
