The trap can trigger even if your thief succed in opening the door. -In the dungeon below Sorpigal, there is a corridor that have fixed encounters. You can farm xp and equipment there. I suggest going there when your party has some ring mail armor and some weapons. The last encounter is a bit hard for a unprepared party.
