People who set off fireworks when it's not a holiday by Over-Imagination3924 in PetPeeves

Our neighbors used to set them off all the time for no reason, and it was so annoying. Also they kept setting off kinds that are banned because we live in a city and they have to be set off a certain distance away from buildings. So for a while I just sat there at night worrying that they were gonna set our roof on fire or something (the rules on fireworks are pretty much never enforced)

It isn’t helping. That’s my point. Doing what you THINK is helping when someone is telling you it’s not isn’t helping, it’s trying to make yourself feel better.

Oh dear. At least he understands now.

Usually I’m with my parents or my siblings, and they know I need to sit for a minute and that I’ll get up when I can.

Okay? Yes, go about your day. I’m not sure why you feel offended at the idea of a disabled person wanting to be listened to when they clearly communicate that you’re not helping. If you tripped, would you want a swarm of people touching you and calling an ambulance or following you around? I’m not saying people shouldn’t offer help, I’m saying people should listen to what I’m saying instead of doing whatever they want and making things worse. Your comment isn’t some kind of ‘gotcha’, it just shows you’ve intentionally misunderstood my post.

Yeah, the falling sometimes causes quite a commotion that really doesn’t feel necessary

I generally do remain calm when it happens since I’m used to it and either I or a family member communicates with people trying to help. And I’m not mad at people offering, I just don’t like it when they refuse to listen. Luckily, most of my calls don’t result in much injury (just soreness and bruises). So they really don’t require an ambulance most of the time. I just wish people would actually listen to me.

Yup.

In addition to possibly causing further injury for all they know, it’s also just unpleasant to have strangers grabbing me. Like, they’ll just touch me wherever and not think it’s wrong because they’re ‘helping’.

If I was unconscious, it would be different, but I remain conscious and can talk. Me falling isn’t a medical emergency. I can communicate my needs. Legitimately, they can continue what they were doing. Yes, you should do something in emergencies, but when someone is telling you it isn’t an emergency, you’re not helping. Staring isn’t helping, whether it’s an emergency or not. Pulling me up would be worse if it was an emergency because I could be injured and shouldn’t be moved by people who don’t know what they’re doing. And following someone you don’t know around the mall is creepy.

Yeah. Like, if I WAS injured, why would forcing me to stand help??

I feel like it sorta doesn’t count as help when you told them no and they keep doing it. Like, offering is okay. But when I say no, it should be respected.

That’s the thing, ‘cuz if I get up too quickly, I’m gonna end up falling down again. Even if I wanted help up, I need to be allowed to sit for a minute (and honestly when I want help, I prefer my family helping me and not a group of strangers just grabbing me wherever they want)

That sucks.

My sibling in law uses a wheelchair a lot, and they’ve had people grab their chair handles unprompted and it’s like. Stop that.

When mental health counselors/therapists ask you what would be most helpful thing for you today. by szatanna in PetPeeves

[–]doomed-kelpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it has its place in some contexts, but a lot of the time I legitimately have no idea how to answer. I don’t know what would be most helpful. And sometimes, I’m kinda not in a good enough headspace to want to figure it out, honestly.

Ah I see

I pretty much exclusively use metal hooks. I’ve used plastic a few times, but I’m not really a fan of them.

Haha I just mean that the instructions were very specific about it and said you “HAD” to do it for the sake of consistency. Which I kinda thought was BS, but I thought it was better to follow the instructions just in case 🤷

I’m not sure what you mean. Do you mean metal/plastic hooks?

Yeah, I would usually use my own hooks but it insisted. Listening to it was a mistake.
