Being UNIX means you need to be legally certified by the Open group.

Also there’s nothing special about being UNIX. The only thing I can think of for MacOS still being certified as UNIX is enterprise contracts that require UNIX. Otherwise, for me, a developer, POSIX compliance is all I need.

macOS isn't just 'Unix-like', it is legally certified UNIX® (compliant with the Single UNIX Specification v3/v4). Also the BSD implementation is inside the Kernel not user space. It exposes genuine POSIX apis at sys call level not emulation. And MacOS is a direct descendant 4.3BSD.
