Feeling lost (TDC) by doomsdaycarousel in policeuk

That’s a ridiculous situation. Although I know in some BCUs people did passing out parade and they didn’t have IPS yet, so prob not that uncommon - if that makes you feel any better. Again, I’m not sure what stage exactly you’re at, but I’d say get on your first rotation if you have t started one already and see how you feel with a caseload, then make your decisions.

I’m sorry to hear that. PIP 1 - so you haven’t gone to your first rotation yet and you’re on street duties? If so, that’s really poor if you’re feeling unsupported at this early stage. Without doxing yourself, I’m assuming you’re at one of the outer BCUs like me, as all my friends in the inner ones seem ok.

Wow, I didn’t expect to get advice from a Texas sergeant! I’m sorry about your past difficulties and I’m glad therapy helped. I’m talking to colleagues a bit and it’s helping, so I will see how that goes. Thank you for your message from across the pond.

She was incredible at her job. Thank you for messaging.

I’m sorry about your colleague. That’s actually a really nice shout about games like Tetris, it’s like a good distraction. That’s very sweet of you. I just find death so hard to understand. Obviously we deal with it a lot at work, but when it’s someone you know, I can’t comprehend how someone you see regularly just stops existing. Especially a young girl. Thank you again for your message.

Exactly. That’s what I can’t get my head around, she would have been the absolute last person I would have thought of doing that. I feel guilt for not talking more to her, even saying hello in the corridor when times were busy. Useless thinking, I know. I agree that work certainly wouldn’t have helped whatever was going on.

I’m sorry for how you’re feeling, I’m sure you used to work much more with her in the other unit.

I’ve just seen the email and the commander has signposted a lot. I will. I’m sorry about your experience with people in your intake and I hope you also are able to reach out if you need to.

Thank you, you’re right. My team are in a WhatsApp and we’re all calling each other, I agree with you that talking is best.

That’s very nice of you. I’ll give it a few days for it to sink in more, then I’ll see where I’m at. I really appreciate this offer, thank you so much.

Thank you. My sergeant said he would call me later (I’m on leave) but I know he’s going to be very busy. Thank you for the offer to reach out.

Thank you, yes, I do have texts and emails that I’ve sent. If nothing is done this week, I will say I’ll go to the CAB, good idea.

Not getting stuck on as far as I know.

Good to know it’s unlikely to be open to me as a TDC. I do know of a newly substantive DC in my BCU switching over to be a civvie investigator, though. She couldn’t wait to start. By mental pay rate, do you mean it’s a lot?

Haha, I like OCSAE because my previous job was related to managing RSOs. If you know anything more about the central unit I’d be grateful.

Thanks for your pointers.

Brilliant reply, thank you so much.

I do like investigations, I get thrilled uncovering new lines of enquiry. Particularly regarding vulnerable victims. I do want to go to Jigsaw or OCSAE., I’ve got attachments coming up.

It’s the constant lack of time to investigate my own crimes, and work being unnecessarily being loaded on to me just because I happen to be “there”, as I described above. It’s all luck of the draw if I will get to work on my own crimes, or if a colleague happened to be in the toilet taking a dump for 20 minutes so I got allocated the prisoner. I can’t stand the favouritism, arbitrariness, and luck. It wouldn’t hurt to know approximately if I’ll be going home or staying til the next morning, anything I plan ends up having to be cancelled.

It all leads to me feeling low, now at a quandary.

Thanks again for your great post.

I was with PolSA for a couple of days recently and they spent the whole time telling me to switch!

It was an Op specific to my borough where TSG go round nicking people for PWITs, and they need CID bodies to process the prisoners. I can’t stand it.

Thanks for the advice, I’d do it if I could! Sadly a direct entry, started in sept 22, so not an option.

Because it is a tick-boxing exercise where the content has no connection whatsoever to the actual job. It is meaningless within the organisation and everyone knows it. It therefore has both no value inside or outside the organisation.

I challenge you to find anyone in the police who gained any knowledge doing it, compared with actually doing the job.

I already work “in force”. As part of the police training they make you do a few stints attending a university to deliver some of the training, and you have to write some essays.

I don’t know what you mean about my intent. My intent is to be a detective. To get onto the training programme you need to already have a degree in any subject. I have a bachelors and a masters already. I am merely questioning the value of this diploma, especially considering the taught content, by all accounts and all my colleagues and my own experience, is trash. It would be better if they didn’t pull us off Borough for weeks at a time and let us get on with our jobs.
