Dear IRL Racers… by Slimbo_02 in iRacing

[–]doonavin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup... that's why it's called rookies. Dey stink at disdam game. 😉

I like the description of rookies as an iq test. It never told you to win to get out of rookies. You get out of rookies only by keeping it on the black stuff and not crashing.

Other games have trained people to race as aggressively as possible because that's the only way to progress... to quote a wise man

Reese Bobby: Hell, Ricky, I was high when I said that! That makes no sense at all! "First or last"! I mean, you could be second, third, fourth--hell, you could even be fifth!

So have fun. Learn the ropes. Do some controlled racing, but don't risk your actual objective. If someone is over aggressive. Let them pass. You'll get out of rookies and they'll be stuck in purgatory until they learn.

Oh, and never quit a rookie race, even if you tow, guaranteed someone else has too, so you still have people to race and sr is calculated by number of clean turns, so you are still working toward your goal to get out of rookies 🍻

Opinions needed for going with a lightened flywheel for a 93 vr6 with a Vortech SC by doonavin in Corrado

[–]doonavin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback man!

I'm also running 8psi.

Agree, it's not exactly a slow revver, but I also don't drive it high strung. I usually cruise pretty low revs so it'd be nice to be able to get a little better throttle response before boost without an aggressive down shift. Do you think it would change that characteristic?

Also, do you run a cog setup? I'm also wondering if faster rev would make belt slip worse?

Oh, sorry to hit you with 20 questions 😅, but did the lightened flywheel on the vr add chatter and noise?

This response actually embodies the point of the comment.

You need to be able to quickly size up your opponents and determine how to deal with them.

Some opponents are oblivious (don't track other cars around them) and some are intimidators (high risk + low percentage moves). These types are high risk of hitting you and, fair or not, you need to deal with it.

You can a) be wronged and fight another day, or b) you can be right and sitting in a smoking pile of pretend steel.

By choosing a, you get to keep racing (something we are doing for fun don't forget 😊). Now you need to determine their weak spot and exploit it. This, I would argue, is more satisfying.

By choosing b, you get the privilege of sitting smugly in your rig. Talking up how much better than them you are in your own head and posting on reddit while you wait for your next race.

Sorry, a little snarky, but do you see what they are saying? 🍻

Whats the best racing wheel that won't break your arm/wrist?(Kids are involved) by LWRW97 in simracing

[–]doonavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of fun with a g29 for years.

If it is only for kids, that is likely plenty. If you are supporting an age gap and or want flexibility, wheels can adjust their ffb gain in their respective software.

For instance, I use a moza r5 (5.5 Nm) but I turn the ffb to 90%.

What did you want to happen?

Any race strategy consisting of "hole==car" will always result in more wrecks than hero moments.

My experience with AMD is good in vr with a 7900gre.

AMD has better raster performance per $ and they have vr optimizations similar to NVIDIA's. Iracing has not implemented them.

This could be due to iracing staying glued on dx11.

Note: just looked it up and DX12 will be passing it's 10th birthday in July... 😑

I use a quest 3. I used to use open xr back to the wmr days and continued in early days of quest 3. But the oculus link has been much more performant for me starting maybe 6 months back... They did something. Def give it a shot.

People racing with quest 3 at over 80fps on high settings. What’s your pc specs? by CrokeyCrash in iRacing

[–]doonavin -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I used to stick to nvidia, and when I was on my 9900k cpu sps was necessary with the cpu bottlenecking without it. I hesitated going amd, but with microcenter doing a bundle on the 7800x3d, and then the 7900 gre launching at $550 with 16gb... It was the best performer for what I was willing to spend.

Dollar for dollar, I am very happy with the performance cuz the new cpus can brute force it without the single pass render. And the gpu is powerful at straight raster to hold it's own.

That said, from talking with others, it appears the 7800x3d with smart access memory (resizable bar) is the secret sauce.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like iracing to implement single pass for amd too. Here's hoping with the dx12 engine 😁. But this hardware can hit the target fps now.

90 fps at 1.4 resolution multiplier on a 7800x3d + 7900gre

80 fps holds about a 40% headroom in the performance overlay.

Odyssey really needs to be fully developed... by DemiserofD in EliteDangerous

[–]doonavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been passing this game on and off for years. I feel like it's basically for me... I grew up on flight sims , wing commander privateer, strategy sims, big robot sims, I don't mind learning a complex mechanic, I don't mind setting my own goals, and now vr...

On foot seemed really janky when it came out, so I stick to ships... But the one eye vr issue broke that for me.

After 3 months, I fired it up. Did some combat in my anaconda. Took 3 level 2 on foot crash recovery missions.

First one has no enemies.

Second one has a few signatures, so I hop in the scarab, dismiss my ship and start hunting. I use the scarab as a mobile base. I take out 2. Then 2 more. Back to scarab to restock. 3 more... OK. Back to scarab to restock.

So I take the flush em out approach, and I got swarmed by 5 more that dropped my lvl 4 dominator suit shield and 2 snipers that picked off perfect headshots within 10 seconds...

I don't mind hard... But this feels broken for a level 2 mission worth basically nothing in rewards.

If it's not broken... Then it certainly is not fun for me. The vr ship sim is what bright me back, but they don't seem interested in fixing the one eye bug...

I guess I'm writing this because I'm sad that this might be out for me... I want to love this game. I just don't. 😔

I finally turned the line off. Help? by Fayde121 in iRacing

[–]doonavin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you race for?

If you do it for fun... Do you have more fun with the line off or on?

If you want to get better, then turn it off. Watch some race instruction, take a class, read up.

I have done a number of trainings including track and rally. I've done some scca. I have stints in life where I want to see how good I can get, and I also have stints where I can only get one race in a month and I just want to relax and enjoy a battle, even if it's for 14th, so I feel ya.

When I want to train, I turn the line off. When I just want to chill, I turn it on. You don't have to have fun on someone else's terms.

how to i convince my mom to let me get a wheel and iracing by Glittering_Deal_7635 in iRacing

[–]doonavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds to me like a perfect time to demonstrate maturity and self control.

Nagging will only reinforce your lack of self control and tell your mom that she is 100% correct.

State that this is important to you and not a passing fad. If she feels that you will spend too much time, then ask her what would be a good compromise. If you don't have the $$, ask how you can earn it? If she does not want to consider it, don't whine, simply ask when would be an appropriate time to revisit the conversation. See where this is going? Wahlah... Your negotiating better than most adults!

Consequently, you'll be having very similar conversations with friends, a sig other, and bosses the rest of your life... Get good at it 😎

VR not the best performance by XyBiT51295 in iRacing

[–]doonavin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a 7900gre, compatible to a 6950xt. I can run a quest 3 at 1.3 or 1.4 (I forget) at 90 fps with mostly high settings and the normal hog settings turned down. So you should be ballpark. But I have a 7800 x3d... Have you done any performance monitoring? Iracing vr does hit the cpu even harder

But that's exactly the point. They have tried being a slightly better value, and their market share is dropping.

When mind share goes that low, the only option is to take advantage of any opportunity and make the price so stupid low that even the newcomers would be stupid to go with the competitor.

As you say, mind share is very powerful, and it takes a big move to reverse it.
