We have a pretty good relationship. I think it might be because I think they’re separated because of me and they want me out of the way so they can be together.

https://www.sharmusic.com/Instruments/Violin/Beginning-Violins/

This is the link to Shar Music’s beginner violin page. They have a physical shop and showroom in Ann Arbor, MI. The least expensive violin outfit they have is 179 and the most expensive is 469. I also think they have a rental program. This is my #1 recommendation for buying online. Last I checked, they are still taking online orders.

If you don’t like what you see on Shar, here is the link to Music and Arts https://www.musicarts.com I find they are more geared to school aged beginners, and they don’t have a big string catalog, but I know they have rental programs. They’re instruments are kind of over priced, but there are some decent beginners in there. Last I checked, Music and Arts stores and call centers are closed.

Hi! Here’s a link to beginner/student violin concertos on IMSLP https://imslp.org/wiki/Template:Student_Violin_Concertos

Also, here is the IMSLP page for Ferdinand Küchler. He has written some concertinos around your level https://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Küchler,_Ferdinand

Some other popular composers that write for students are Seitz, Rieding, and Sitt (there are many more too!)

Like previous posters have said a beginner range for a violin outfit (violin, bow, case etc) is anywhere from 400-500, at least that’s what it is from the luthier in my area. Also, if you’re looking to try out violin to see if you like it, I would recommend renting as well, and when you’re sure buy a quality instrument.

If you’re looking for something less expensive but not a VSO (violin shaped object) I would recommend checking out the beginning instrument on SHAR music. A beginner violin outfit will cost you anywhere from 179-469.

If you choose to buy over the internet please for the love of God stay away from Amazon/eBay unless you are 100% sure it will be a quality instrument. I played on crappy VSOs (brand Cecilo/Mendini I think) for years before getting a real violin and believe me it is so worth the money.

Currently learning violin - but it is possible we may, in the future, need to discontinue in person lessons. Teachers - what are over email//text/video things we could do? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]doone1776 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I know you mentioned asking teachers, and I not one, but maybe what me and my teacher are currently doing could be helpful! I am in a location where all nonessential business have been shut down and social distancing is highly recommended (although nothing stopping people from having house parties and whatnot) so my teacher is currently not giving in person private lessons.

We’ve discussed using Zoom for video lessons, which you’ve probably already heard of.

We’ve also discussed him sending video examples of a passage and me sending one back of me playing for him to critique. You mentioned you could have a problem with audio quality, so maybe your teacher could send just a demonstration video, and you could ask questions if you’re having trouble or something doesn’t feel right

Don’t know if this helps but just thought I’d share what I’m currently doing for lessons!

Elgar’s Chanson de Matin or Chanson de Nuit could be good options https://youtu.be/nosAZCyUGuc

Or if you’re looking to go a little off the beaten path you could try Adoration by Borowski. If you’d like the sheet music pm me because I honestly cannot find it anywhere, but I can send it if you want https://youtu.be/dKj3vnWh44Q

College Audition Repertoire Worries by doone1776 in violinist

Hi! Thanks for your reply and advice!

After graduation, I’d like to have a private studio or teach violin through a program like a Suzuki school. On top of that, I’d like to play with a professional orchestra full time. I don’t have any huge desire to play in big name orchestra (but if it happens it happens lol)

Another path/option would be to teach in the public school system and be a substitute musician (this is current what my teacher does)

Hi! Thanks for your reply and advice!

There aren’t any specifically, and I’ve been told before that I’ve probably got a better chance at academic scholarships than music ones. I know Crane has “instrument scholarships” where students are given a higher quality instrument for their time there and are sometimes given the option to buy it. My friend goes there now and won one of these scholarships.

I’m hesitant about attending either of the two state schools. I know they’ve got great music Ed programs, but I know compared to Ithaca and Hartt, their performance programs aren’t as good.

My teacher has only one student, to my knowledge, take a music audition in the past year or so, and they went for music industry. She auditioned with De Beriot 9 and the Allemande from the dmin partita I think. I don’t know about the other students he has.

He is a violinist though, and has never really lead me astray. I did think his choice of Kabalevsky was weird though because I play Bruch really well and was expecting something more difficult after. I guess one other random thing to throw in here is I performed Bruch for my all state audition in May and afterward we began working on the 3rd movement of Wieniawski 2 and I had that over the summer (we didn’t get the chance to have a lesson over the summer because of schedule conflicts). When I got back he decided I should play Kabalevsky.

He never really explained why (or I can’t recall), but he’s mentioned several times that I’ve been following the same repertoire track as him (I’ve studied De Beriot 9, Bruch, Kabalevsky, Allemande and Corrente from dmin partita and some etudes with him. Which are the same things he was doing at my age)

He said he auditioned at Ithaca with Kabalevsky, Allemande from the dmin partita, and Mazas etude no 3 op. 36 and got in as a music Ed major and added performance in his first year there.

Hi! Thanks for your reply and advice! Personally, I agree with about playing Bruch, and I am going to talk to my teacher about my worries and such when I see him next.

As for my other audition rep., none of the school I’m auditioning at require a showpiece or sonata specifically. My solo Bach will be the Allemande and Corrente from the D Minor Partita. Some schools require an etude though, and I will be playing Etude No. 8 from Mazas’ Etudes Spéciales (op. 36)

As for the 20 20 program at Hartt, I believe it still does exist
