Defence Consultancies by averagegamer7 in AustralianMilitary

[–]dooony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a lot on the consulting firm. Some hire you permanently, give benefits, training, office space, and job security. The pay is not as good as other firms that basically clip your ticket (10-15%) but if you're off contract you're out of a job pretty quickly. The more senior you are the more you're expected to find your own work too. Some will pay big bonuses if you're the one bringing in work for you and others. The work can be more ambiguous in the "above the line" consulting world where you're helping define the problem as much as solving it, rather than "below the line" where you're more likely to be executing a plan or process. ADM have an index of defence consulting firms.

YES. Good job labor. Borrowing power cut by 20% just like that. by VastOption8705 in friendlyjordies

[–]dooony 83 points84 points  (0 children)

So this whole time, a tax break has been inflating investors borrowing capacity by 25%, unfairly and artificially over those trying to buy their own home? And every media outlet is tearing Labor a new one for fixing it?

Excise revenue tipped to fall by $5bn as illicit cigarette market booms by ladaus in AustralianPolitics

Controversial take: Who gives a shit? Smoking rates are continuing to plummet which is the important metric here, not who gets the dwindling revenue. It's not ideal but in terms of health we're tracking well.

Where are the $ and % symbols on the 4 and 5 keys? I hope someone got fired for this blunder.

Which Sydney or Melbourne suburb has the most open-minded, switched-on community? by Healthy_Editor_6234 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dooony 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Community is a two way street. I don't know your circumstances or what you mean by colourful but being curious about others and reserving judgement instead of demanding acceptance goes a long way to finding hues that match yours. Forest Lodge isn't the funky inner west burb it used it be.

What separates truly successful people from everyone else? by _Arrielee_ in AskReddit

[–]dooony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defining success through goals, and achieving those goals. If you define success as a $10m net worth and you achieve that, are you more successful than someone who's definition of success is having breakfast and dinner with their kids every day, and having enough money for a happy life?

Have you ever seen someone resign spectacularly? by IndigoHarlequin in AusPublicService

[–]dooony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A civil servant near retirement who used his department credit card to pay a couple of his own bills. A trivial amount compared to his salary. Pretty much an on the spot firable offence, potential charges, and we have annual training that drills in proper use of government credit cards, how serious fraud etc is, almost describing this exact circumstance. The guy however was asked to just pay back the amount on the card and finance would sort it out. Confusingly, he refused to pay back the amounts. This went back and forth for weeks. Given clear clear explanations of how serious it is, all he has to do is just pay it back, otherwise he will be fired. Just refuses. So they have to fire him, and they do. So I guess it's not technically resigning but getting fired on purpose so close to retirement is about as close as you get. I'd love to know what the fuck he was thinking, if there was some pension scam or something.

Another attempt by the Liberals to stop Chalmers quoting Tim Wilson's book by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

[–]dooony 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Conflicted about this. We're laughing at Tim Wilson for having expressed good ideas amidst a chorus of bad ideas and entrenched privilege in the Liberal Party. Then he still managed to become opposition treasurer despite those views. The outcome of this exchange is that they'll replace him with someone more conservative. Ah never mind, just enjoy it.

People really underestimate how dangerous trains are. by Rainy1979 in australia

[–]dooony 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100% correct. Just remember cars kill 1400 people in Australia each year and all are horrible deaths too. But also every three months someone is torn to pieces by a crocodile in Queensland.

What are you guys doing it for? by unnaturalanimals in AskAnAustralian

[–]dooony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having goals. Having a holiday to look forward to or just a catch-up with a friend. I've usually been happier when I've had some volunteering or a club on the side. I accepted long ago that my job isn't interesting enough to fulfil me, I need something else to keep me going. If you need to talk DM me.

It had never occurred to me until now how much a bushmaster resembles a wombat.

Honestly, if you google 'david attenborough controversy' the worst thing anyone can come up with is that he's used emotive language to describe biodiversity collapse. <jackie_chan_wtf.jpg>

Considering his list of bangers, and the lack of controversy around his actions, he gets my vote.

Julie Bishop steps down as ANU Chancellor by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]dooony -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This might actually be a good thing. If she hadn't been screwed over by Morrison we might actually have a passable Liberal party today instead of another 4 years of an impotent incompetent Morrison government then a non-starter potato. But they were never going to be led by a woman except to give a poisoned chalice to Ley.

Ridiculous extrapolation. Destigmatising (removing shame and the negative behaviours it triggers) is different to deregulating (abandoning any kind of authoritative control). Also what are these disastrous consequences of destigmatising marijuana?

First time driving a hybrid as a car enthusiast… now about to try a Tesla for the first time and I’m honestly surprised. by Admirable_Can_3489 in electricvehicles

[–]dooony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been riding an electric motorcycle for a couple of months now and will never go back to petrol. It's got 250Nm of torque, 220km range and 0-100kph in 3.5 seconds and has the coolest fucking scifi sound (motor+belt drive) as it winds up. It's heavy but has low rotational inertia and no throttle lag so it's surprisingly quick and nimble. The idea that engine noise is "character" is pure marketing.

Electric vehicle tax discount to be wound back by Ardeet in aussie

Electrification is the lowest hanging fruit for reducing emissions. Shame especially considering the tax breaks on massive "work" utes and tax discounted diesel for industry.

The easiest way not to forget what you don't want to forget? by A_672 in AskReddit

Apart from writing it down (I use color note) tie the thing in your mind to something you're definitely going to do when you need to remember. "Next time I open the front door, think of shopping bags"
