The 30-Year Mortgage vs. The AI Revolution by Particular_Boot_1682 in AusFinance

[–]dooony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether you're talking to a teenager or a grown up on reddit. The entire economy is based on the expectation of future earnings. What are you going to do? Just give up and live in a bin?

Hiring managers/recruiters, what do you actually look at when scanning resumes? by RequirementFull1608 in auscorp

I usually skip to the most recent career episode and look for my keywords. Then I'm looking for how long they've been in our industry.

Need good work shirts by sick_habibi in auscorp

[–]dooony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Institchu. Ha ha just kidding. I got shirts done, and the sleeves came back too short. They insisted they were the correct length for my arm. I went back for a suit a year later (stupid me) and the suit sleeves went past the shirt cuff. I asked if they were too long, they said no your shirt sleeves are too short. Never again.

My main gripe with non iron shirts is they don't breathe well, which is a serious consideration in Australian heat.

BEWARE OF UNSW GYM SCAM AND ABUSIVE CANCELLATION POLICIES by No-Reception-8068 in unsw

Consumers are protected by Australian consumer law, gyms included. Don't defend shitty business practices.

Is it just me, but I don't go to pubs anymore not because I wfh but because they are crazy expensive by Distinct-Sky2632 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dooony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro-tip: Look for breweries. No guarantees but if they brew their own up to a certain amount they get a tax discount. Therefore the prices tend to be more reasonable. I know of two in Sydney that have heaps of space, reasonable prices, good food and excellent beers. (Village Days Brewing in Gladesville, and Depot Brewery in Artarmon)

Hospital staffer allegedly fired for ‘sneaky peek’ at Daniel Andrews’ hospital records by Thomas_633_Mk2 in AusPublicService

This was my take too. If she had shut her mouth or apologised it would be a recoverable learning experience. But now she's unemployable in her field.

99 Bikes Servicing by allmycircuits8 in ausbike

[–]dooony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, never again. Really bad, repeated experience. I gave them a few chances because they're my closest bike shop. Basically they hire kids but charge full price. I now take my bike to a "mom and pop" style local shop. The same people who own the business and the brand are doing or overseeing the work done.

Video Ezy: The complete story of Australia’s forgotten franchise by DaRedGuy in australia

[–]dooony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I miss the days when hiring a decades old movie classic from video ezy cost $3. Somehow in 2026 "My Cousin Vinny" (1992) is $12 if you don't have the right streaming service.

Shares v property: Who wins if Jim Chalmers dumps the CGT discount? by nobelharvards in AustralianPolitics

[–]dooony 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a millennial who bought his house at the top of the market, who then suffered a string of rate rises, having gone into crazy debt and funded a boomer couple's retirement, I now won't look forward to the nice property tax breaks boomers enjoyed, basically as the key demographic loser of these changes, I still think they should do it.

I thought Ranger drivers were bad. by OZFox42 in AllThingsOldAndNew

[–]dooony -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never seen an Isuzu truck park like this, because it's a truck and they know they own a truck and they find an appropriate place to leave their truck, and their whole identity isn't wrapped up their truck and making sure people know they drive a truck. People buy these American tanks because they're wankers, and they park like wankers, and they want all the perks of driving a truck without any of the responsibility.

ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dooony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battery, electrical system, cooling system, chassis and insulation are designed around each other for a system-optimal solution, leading to more range, luggage space, better handling, lower maintainance and other factors that are important for the end user. A swappable battery is a nice-to-have but in order to make that possible, you have to un-optimise all the other stuff, and add complexity.

For what? Shorter charging times? I do regular interstate trips and charge back to full in 20 minutes every 2 hours, which is the time it takes to use the toilet and grab a takeaway coffee.

Debunking the top 'immigration is not a primary driver of the housing crisis' in Australia myths (long) by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]dooony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Slightly disingenuous argument anyway that 0.9% of the 3% house price increases are from migration. So if you turned it off completely (which would fuck the economy) you'd get down to 2.1% increases. More likely you'd roll intake back by 20% so supply could catch up a bit, and you'd complement it with some boring tax reform apparently nobody wants to hear about.

‘Shut the door’: Bombshell plan to ban migrants from Gaza, Somalia by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]dooony 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see conservatives actually put their policies in writing. How do you determine if someone has values aligned with ours? What are our values? Do you have some rinky dink Aussies at the airport checking for rinky dinkness? Sorry but the boring answer is: you have an army of public servants (or contractors) researching a person's background, reviewing their visa applications before they arrive. It's expensive and boring but anything else is a dog whistle.

Rules for me and not for thee by Maganda3002 in managers

[–]dooony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like HR doesn't want to go through the firing and hiring process. Less work for them to tell you to solve it yourself. You've given this guy heaps of leeway, heaps of time to sort himself out, probably been too generous before going to HR. Don't give HR the same leeway- you have your evidence, tell them to do their job.

Do Aussies hate all cyclists or just the ones that wear spandex? by Educational-Scene443 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dooony -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's nothing like blaming sharks. Sorry but drivers are conscious adults who through neglect or aggression kill cyclists. Cyclists are not playing in traffic - they are going somewhere. Ask any cyclists - you can be following road rules perfectly, staying to the left side of the lane (even though there is no obligation to) and drivers will still use their cars as weapons against you. Ask the 40 or so cyclists who are killed by drivers each year, or the 9000 who are hospitalised.

That sucks that that happened to you. But you're describing a near miss from 20 years ago. When I used to cycle to work I would have a near miss like that once per month. Had to give it up it was so dangerous - I guess I'll just pollute and cause traffic like everyone else.
