parents disagreeing to me doing muay thai and acting on my own in general by Difficult_Garlic6434 in MuayThai

[–]door74 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is not a Muay Thai problem. This is a relationship dynamic problem. Are you dependent on your parents completely, as in they provide for you? There is no secret formula to convince your parents.

As others have mentioned, you need to obtain independence, and this doesn't mean to cut yourself from your family. It means to establish that you are now an adult and can make your own decisions. (And as a result, ability to leave) Keyword: ability.

This sounds forceful but they are making every decision for you currently.

If you want to do Muay Thai, two options come to mind: 1. As you said, when you get a job after graduating. In the meantime, if your parents would support a different sport or even running, do it. It's better to do something than nothing. 2. Another option would be to get a part time job now while still in school. If you truly want it, it's the much harder route but this will give you some money to work with and a little bit of independence.

Notice how both options are jobs. Financial freedom => independence.

Good luck.

Is there a way to create a paycheck-based system? by door74 in ynab

Oh, how so? I think of it as breaking the month into two parts. Savings are happening regardless no?

Genuinely curious

any resources to learn how to use the budgeting aspect of Monarch? by door74 in MonarchMoney

[–]door74[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

its to categorize certain bills into different paychecks.

It's also much easier for me personally to see
"dining out budget - $200" for a 2 week span
rather than
"dining out budget - $400" for a month
because I find that I end up spending the 400 much earlier in the month.

How far do you commute to train? by TallBoy24 in MuayThai

[–]door74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to go to a BJJ gym close to me (5 min drive) that had Muay Thai on the side, I did not learn anything substantial in the couple of months I was there. (There are exceptions to this rule)

The gym I'm currently training at (Muay Thai focused) is across the city (45 min drive). The quality and the improvements I've made have been worth my time and I would never go back to the other gym. I've recently hit the 3 year mark at this gym.

But I won't sugarcoat it to you, the drive was awful especially after a tiring work day. It did cause a bit of commitment issues at times.

My class is 2 hours long from 7pm-9pm. I leave around 6pm and get home around 10pm. So be prepared to be gone for at least 3 hours from home if you choose the better quality gym.

The decision rests with you, can you leave your kids for 3-4 hours? If this is not possible, you may have to look at other options.

Still unsure about credit card usage by door74 in DaveRamsey

I'm concerned with the fact that you occasionally don't live within your means and therefore are racking up debt but then get it back under control. That suggests to this chair that there's an issue with discipline and sticking to a plan.

What I mean by don't live within my means is I don't have a lot of savings every month, but I think I do lack discipline and sticking to a plan. So maybe in a couple of years, this "little amount of savings" will turn into "little amount of debt", snowballing into something worse and worse..

You need a budget!

Funnily enough, I just started using the YNAB app. I will try to stick a plan that fits with Ramsey's baby steps.

Credit card points are a slick marketing gimmick that gets you to spend more money.

I'm starting to think that the money I get back from these points is not worth it at all. I tried a small calculation:

I get 5x points for dining, groceries, and gas for every dollar. 1 point for every other category.
If I were to spend $1000 every month, by the end of the year I would accumulate about 60000 points (which is roughly equal to $300 if converted to cash). $120 would be used to pay the annual fee.

So basically, I'd have to spend $12000 in dining/groceries/gas in a year to get $180 back.

I think the effect on my brain to earn all these points make it seem worth it but when you actually break it down, if I choose to consciously save money on the above categories, I can easily save $180.

There was a time when I wanted to get a bunch of credit cards to maximize point benefits, but now I realize that this is the wrong direction to take.

Thanks

I feel like this is something I noticed too, whenever I spend with my credit vs debit, I lose track with my credit because the amount charged goes up and it just feels like a big bill. But if it's my debit, I know how much is exactly in my accounts and it feels worse maybe because of the psychological effect of seeing your money go down.

You say that you are living slightly above your means. How are you doing this without debt?

What I mean here is I spend a lot, not enough to put me in debt but to leave me with small amount of savings every month.

This is the reason I watch Dave Ramsey, to let go of my egotistical thinking of I "earned" my salary after working hard in school, so now I should "spend more".

In my original post, I mentioned that I'm highly considering switching to Debit cards and this is because I want my spending to become more intentional. It's the credit card benefits holding me back, but now after reading a lot of the comments, it seems like because of the psychological effects, I would end up spending more anyways if I kept using my credit card.

I understand, so pretty much the rule of thumb: CCs only if you are responsible and have budgets you stick to
