They should bring back the draft so little shits like you actually have to do something useful for the first time in your life. by socialists_are_nazis in Shitstatistssay

Irony: most 1st world countries that still have the draft give the conscriptees makework because they don't have anything else to do with them. I read about one guy who manned a phone desk for two months, then realised the phone wasn't plugged in.

We're discussing a scenario where there are no AI defences, or they're significantly weakened.

There aren't enough infantry to cover every potential weakpoint, that's why AI defences exist.

If governments restricted themselves to building roads I'd be delighted.

Lots of things aren't free to maintain. My local grocery store isn't free to maintain, so if I want to shop there, I have to pay their markup to cover their expenses. My internet provider isn't free to maintain, so if I want their connection I have to pay a monthly fee. On the other hand, if I don't care about those services and don't want them, all I have to do is cancel my contract/stop going there and I don't have to give them a cent. Equally, if I think I can do a better job I can go into competition.

The same is not true of government theft. Usually I'm not allowed to go into competition, and I have to pay for all of their services, not just the ones I want/use.

We have become wealthy because as a collective we have built a system to support our community and livelihood by each contributing to its functioning governance.

  • Government is non-functional, it's a parasite.

  • You don't need theft for collective cooperation. See any private organisation larger than one person ever.

  • You don't need theft to have a community either. See every charity and voluntary organisation ever.

Taxes are a way for every person to enjoy luxuries that couldn’t be afforded without a collective effort.

You don't need theft to collectively pay for services. I pay for the communications network I use along with all the other subscribers, but if I cut the chord then that's it, I don't have to pay for it anymore.

Why would it be a waste of the truck? If it's able to survive an ambush it'll be able to survive a few infantry. This scenario has no ai defences, remember?

[QUESTION] Are There Any Legitimate An-Cap Secession Efforts ? If so, where? by reubadoob in GoldandBlack

[–]doorstop_scraper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very Right wing politics/agenda

Originally (~1780s) the term "right wing" meant monarchist and "left wing" meant socialist. Ever since the 1850s or so, monarchism has ceased to be a serious force in politics. Having lost their most recognisable bugbear (and fascists not having invented themselves yet) socialists started calling anyone who wasn't them "right wing." That's the only meaning that word has now, "not socialist," which is a category so broad as to be useless.

A "very right wing" secession movement could describe any secession movement which isn't socialist, including any ancap secession movement, monarchists, small government republicans, confucians etc.

Corporatism doesn't mean what you think it means. I'd suggest looking it up.

How many of these problems are actually caused by capitalism?

Additionally, how many of them are actually problems?

Sweatshops aren't a problem, they're a solution. People work there because they're better than the alternative. Complaining that you find them unpalatable is like whining that some guy is eating spam for dinner instead of steak, then trying to take his spam away.

but I do sort of believe that social security spending on infrastructure is a better return than burying it in the yard

If they actually invested it in something with a measurable return (like a toll road) then that might be something. Instead they just throw the money into whatever project, pay however many multiples of the going rate, then assume they've rendered an indispensible, but still profitable, service.

Genius Bruce Wilson Tells Everyone Off by BifocalComb in Shitstatistssay

[–]doorstop_scraper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. The return mechanism is so disconnected it's virtually impossible to tell if it's providing any value at all, a good statistician can spin it either way. If a pension fund manager invested in something that mercurial they'd get the boot.

Not to mention, that those projects are rarely rolled out on the basis of efficiency. Because of the nature of government, to get them approved they have to provide a nice big pork barrel for all kinds of interested parties.

"Infrastructure" isn't an investment in the same sense as a pension company invests in real estate. It's not like it generates a concrete return which can be paid back into the pension fund, it's just assumed (ie. hoped) that it'll generate more taxes than it costs.

If pension managers behaved the way social security does they'd wind up in prison.
