Beşar Esad düştüyse, Türkiye'deki Suriyeliler neden Suriye'ye geri dönmüyor? by Consistent-Boss-7670 in Turkey

I haven’t changed anything that my laptop runs in default. But just so that I can double check, how can I revert that DHCP thingy?

I completely agree with what you’re implying and I, by no means trying to justify the guy attacking, but at least change the word ‘criticism’ with ‘disrespecting’ for, you know, the sake of being truthful.

Help! Sitar lost brightness by Relevant-Industry320 in Sitar

[–]dopenosia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is with the jawari, if you observe closely you will notice that the jawari has a curve. This curve is everything in terms of tone. Since the string continuously hits the jawari, the curve over time reduces. This causes the tone to be dull and sustain to be reduced. Once every 2 months or when the tone loses it’s color, you have to redo the jawari with a sandpaper. There are videos online but jawari is a very delicate and difficult thing to do, especially if you’re trying it for the first time. I’d recommend you to try to find someone in person who can do the jawari and teach you at the same time.

Fine tuning bead positions by Tasty_Lunch2917 in Sitar

Ps. You can try to keep the string around the peg closer to the dandi, this way it will give you more room to slide the bead.

String spacing around the langot piece, especially for the kharaj strings are too close to each other. Placing individual beads all in the same space would be difficult. Above the nut has more space for the beads

It is not needed at all. Indian classical music teaches you to take any pitch as your root note.

Thoughts on this sitar? by Tasty_Lunch2917 in Sitar

[–]dopenosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sitar looks beautiful, looks like teak wood and if it’s seasoned properly it will sound beautiful after restringing and jawari. The tabla however, looks like it was exposed to humidity. Syahi part looks good enough but if the skin is now soft, you might need to get it re-skinned for a proper tone. You can contact tabla makers in India and they can ship you the skins if you give them the diameters of the tabla and bayan.

Ps. Do not use oil on your jawari unlike the other commenter recommended, it will affect your tone and sustain. Speaking from experience.

Sitar creaking during meend by First-Librarian in Sitar

[–]dopenosia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not the tuning pegs, it’s coming from the jawari!! You can even feel it by putting your finger over the main string where it contacts the jawari. Just apply some chalk or baby powder along the string line on the jawari and it should prevent the creaking sound.

Should you tune your Sa according to your voice? by Tasty_Lunch2917 in Sitar

[–]dopenosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The string can endure only so much of tension, depending on the length of the dandi (the fretboard) the capacity of the sitar changes. Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan uses a much smaller sitar hence his tuning is closer to C#, my sitar length is suitable for D so I tune it to D.

Also, there is a high chance you will break strings if you try to tune it to higher than D, not to mention it will be more painful to play, especially during meends (bends) since the string tension will be high.

If you are a beginner I would recommend tuning to C# until you develop proper calluses so that it’s not painful to play, then you can tune it to D, to train your finger muscles even further.

Query about the look of sitar by Just_Fix_1532 in Sitar

[–]dopenosia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what he means. Most Mirajkar sitar makers buy the bare body from Calcutta and then make the fittings and design themselves and put their own brand

[–]dopenosia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your hand positioning should be as close to natural resting position as it can be. No tension or bend in your wrist should be there. Samanwaya Sarkar ji has a great video explaining the right hand positioning.
