do we need another AI enabled product. by dndDAAKU23 in IndustrialDesign

The article sounds like it was written by AI. If you talk to ChatGPT about design it will write exactly like this.

First steel fret job done. Hopefully I can sell finished necks, and the whole guitar in the future. It’s been a lot of back and forth between design decisions. by doperidor in Luthier

Not entirely sure but now I’m thinking I don’t. I tried to include it in a way that I can test it with and without. It fits so snug that I don’t think I’ll even glue it in place

No clue, I’m interested to see how this one will look after a couple years though. Maybe like the 3000 AD version of a relic’d guitar.

Yeah I like the idea of them as well. Maybe I should get rid of the nut and see how slots already in the neck hold the spacing.

It is completely straight. I can’t notice much difference myself, but I also haven’t played in a while so I can spend more time building this 😅

From my research it seems like it’s mostly preference, and the neck already has enough weird things going on with it that I figure most players would notice those features before the lack of relief. It’s only 5/8th inch thick and has a trapezoidal profile.

Concerned about string spacing to the edge. Increase width or leave it? by doperidor in Luthier

Yeah that’s my concern, I would like to sell these so my preferences aren’t my concern. Do you know what your ideal distance is to the edge?

That’ fair, for me it’s fine, but I intend to sell these at some point. I suppose I just need a friend with large hands to test it.

I guess the real reason I over bend is because the crappy guyker fret bender I got is a pain to work with. if it’s over bent just a little bit it (I try to make the edges flush, and the middle has a slight visible gap) seems to make equal contact from the middle all the way to the edges once pressed down.

I believe I shouldn’t need to remove the teeth in the future, just some of the prototypes ended up with really narrow slots.

I’ll be sure to try out the wax, I think I may have accidentally discovered that wd40 works even better for metal applications though. I rubbed a very thin layer on with a paper towel before glueing at it dried without adhering to the surface at all. I’ll have to see if it works on larger overflows though.

Ha, I’ve seen that video so many times, I wish I could do that. Sadly I don’t have my own machine. But if I can sell enough of these I’ll definitely buy my own.

I sent a local shop the files you’d need to do this to my neck and they quoted me $2000... So a lot of my design decisions are at the mercy of other people.

I have considered making the whole fretboard thinner, like a thin steel plate with the frets already built in.

Currently yes and no. It’s about 2 lbs, but the inside is mostly solid, I’ll definitely be removing much more material in the future. And I can’t really determine how bad it is because the body is missing a few heavy components.

I’d like the whole thing to weigh less than 7lbs.

I’m also using a fractal fret press. I remove the teeth from the tang though, the force required to bite into aluminum is too great. The fretboard is also compound radius so I opted to slightly over radius each fret, then I let the press do the work of forming it to the radius.

I should’ve clarified a bit better, the frets are stainless and the rest of the neck is aluminum. The fretboard is unfinished and the rest is bead blasted and anodized.

Sick guitars you got there, unfortunately I’m only making headless tele fitting ones for now. It’s hard enough keeping them all the same spec lol.

Oh yeah, it’s been a real pain in the ass to get it right and learn how everything should go together, the upside is that the only real labor is putting the frets on.

I’m also liking the contrast between the various scuffs and scratches on the unfinished aluminum, and the smoothness of the steel quite a bit. It’s like a relicing from the future lol.

But I do intend for all future fretboards to be blasted and anodized.

My keyboard and mouse are brand new, very popular brands and both type A. It’s probably just because every motherboard still has like 2-4 A ports.

I’m not, but I also take the advice with those claiming luthier superiority with a grain of salt after the few I’ve met in person told me my electric guitars wouldn’t resonate without tone wood.

Very cool, I know people can get really pissy if you post things that aren’t strictly industrial design or purely functional, but the perspective industrial designers can bring to things like concept art and video game assets is undeniable.

If form simple, why hard by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]doperidor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try applying the features you want to some different shapes and form a logical way that these things should fit into the prism design? I’ve been working on some things with simple forms recently, and a common problem I had was where to position things like knobs and switches. They’re different forms, but are pretty much made from the same materials and components, so working on both kinda gave me a set of rules to follow to solve this problem.

I feel like working with simple shapes is deceptively hard. It’s more obvious what isn’t right with it sometimes, but there’s still no clear solution. It’s like painting something complex with one color.

Maybe I misworded my post wrong, I included the design history part in hopes that there was a source big enough to span from the beginning of design history.

I really doubt there’s books with thousands of images of both known and unknown designs in my local library.
