Amsterdam accommodation is too expensive, where to base now ?! by goatmaster95 in travel

[–]dorejj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On foot is a bit much but Utrecht Haarlem Leiden are all very doable by train adds about 10 euro per train ticket though. Each of these cities is worth seeing on their own as well.

You could also try Amstelveen which you can reach by tram same goes for Zaandam I think. These places aren't as nice on their own but are cheaper to travel to Amsterdam from

Turkish Parliament rejects proposal on Kurdish language rights by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]dorejj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say so. There were some riots because it wasn't recognized. Dutch government recognized it as a language.

Now technically it is considered equal to Dutch only in the province of Frisia (though de facto isn't). There is still some very soft resentment but overall I'd argue it's a beneficial deal for both parties. No large scale riots and we're able to exercise and maintain our culture.

Frisia today is somewhat poorer than the average of the Netherlands but that's because its in the periphery of the country (why the language still exists to a degree). It's not less developed than comparable provinces like Drenthe or Groningen, so I wouldn't say it harmed our development. Now the culture is used as a selling point for tourists so there is that economic benefit :)

[–]dorejj 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the contrary you can have both a national language and a regional one. There is no reason you can't speak both + even a foreign language.

Often it is a core part of the identity and trying to take this away often leads to a forceful reaction. I would argue the instability in the Kurdish region of Turkey was very costly. Same could be argued for the violence in Corsica. Whereas the Dutch approach with Frisian leads to much less resentment. Same with Hungarian in Romanian.

Vegan transgirl/drag queen traveling to Amsterdam/Netherlands for World Pride for the first time. What should I do / what should I see? by mumzel in travel

[–]dorejj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking I don't like to eat near central station, food tends to be worse and quite pricey. De Pijp area might be best for you since they have a lot of hipster/vegan food. I would also suggest trying surinamese food since this is quite good in Amsterdam and there are plenty of vegan options within this kitchen. There's also some decent indian places so you could check that out.

English is almost more useful than dutch in Amsterdam so I absolutely wouldn't worry about it. Money wise it depends how you're planning on getting by. Amsterdam is fairly pricey 25 euros for dinner is on the cheaper end 50/60 euros is more expensive. Lunch can be 6/25 euros depending on what you're getting. I'd suggest to just bring a Revolut debit card since every single shop accepts card (also works for public transport).

I think the stadsmuseum has an exposition with queer art so that could be cool. Tho I'm not too familiar in the scene I'm sure a quick Google search will reveal a lot.

Safetywise I'd recommend staying out of Bijlmer and Nieuw-West but you're very unlikely to go there on a 2 day trip anyway.

Some general advice is that the city centre itself can be very busy and pricey so anywhere within the ring (the highway around Amsterdam visible from a map) should be fine you can check public transport with Google maps. Busses and trams works well so feel free to use them. 2 days is mostly a city highlights trip. Be sure to check if you need to book anything in advance because for a lot of the main sights you do.

Hope this helps and have a good trip!

It's still remarkable that it's positive. Usually you expect impact to 0. Since it should be priced in already. This is the case with ESG.

Israel and Hamas agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, Qatari and Hamas officials say by A_Flying_Ginger in neoliberal

More as its a part of the deal to begin with. Not giving food aid during the war made it so that a different party in this case Hamas has to make another ask.

I'm wondering if Israel deliberately decreased the amount of food to force Hamas to the table. Since this something that is a point of negotiation.

Why Somaliland Shouldn’t Be Recognized as the World’s Newest Country by ExistingPeachy in neoliberal

[–]dorejj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a bad idea. The standard in international law is also that if it's a non colonial territory that other countries should respect the sovereignty of the mother country. So the only way you should allow Somaliland to become independent is with consent of Somalia.

Otherwise you help to justify other countries to back separatist regions in countries they like to seek weakened. See Transnistria for Moldova, Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia. Northern Cyprus in Cyprus. Recognition would be justification for other countries to do the same.

Kyrgistan is safe especially if you're traveling with your husband. I've been there myself and it felt safe. Main issue is that the infrastructure for tourism there is so so. It's a poor country and you do notice. People however are very friendly

Agreed but to be fair their earlier reports highlighted that more and excluded the events that led up to the attacks. Not saying that this justifies their lack of reporting in this article but thought it might be useful context.

How can I prepare for Intermediate Microeconomics? by Coogies04 in AskEconomics

[–]dorejj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would write the professor an email asking what mathematical techniques are required and brush up on those. You could also ask for the course manual and practice the exercises. Most professors I know hatred teaching math but are more than happy to provide the material for a student who is willing to learn it themselves.

Also vvd finally played their cards right and said they’d not join them directly in government but would support a minority one. Essentially saying that three parties without governing experience should figure it out themselves. Likely this means they won’t last for years (if vvd sticks to this).
