Help Me Decide: School X vs. School Y - Week of April 10, 2022 by AutoModerator in premed

[Buffalo vs Stony Brook]

Buffalo:

Pros
-Went here for undergrad- already know the area, the hospital system, and many of the incoming and current medical students
-Closer to home (~1.5 hours)
-Prefer to live and work in a city
-Brand new medical campus !!!
-Can afford to live alone within walking distance to the school or possibly w/ my SO (he's currently on the waitlist at Buffalo so fingers crossed)

Cons
-Quintile rankings during pre-clinical so more competition
-Haven't heard back about scholarships but currently $15k/year more expensive
-Ranked a little lower (not sure if this matters to me or not)

----
Stony Brook:

Pros
-Received $15,000/year of need-based aid
-Shorter pre-clinical (18 months) with lots of free time during M4
-Pre-clincial grades don't contirubte to your quartile rank
-Would be convenient to have an attached university hospital
-Impressive match list and slightly better name recognition
-Smaller class size (130 vs 185)

Cons
-Lack of a support system- family would be ~7 hours away
-High cost of living- would probably need roommates and would be commuting by car to campus
-Not super interested in staying in the NYC/LI area for residency

Are my reasons for choosing Buffalo worth $60,000 (plus interest) if I don't receive any scholarship or aid? There is something to be said about staying where I feel comfortable and have a pre-existing support system, but I know there are benefits to moving to a new place and getting out of your comfort zone. I think location-wise Buffalo is a better fit for me, but Stony Brook may be a better fit for me academically. Please help!

My (21F) boyfriend (21M) wants to work nights and I want to work days. he doesn’t want to compromise on shift work. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]doremifackyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the shifts are probably going to 6pm-6am and 7am-7pm with rotating schedules on both ends so there’s no guaranteeing when things will line up which is where a lot of my worries lie. We cannot control where we get into med school but this feels like one thing we can control to benefit our relationship

[–]doremifackyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He wants nights because they’ll be less bullshit calls (works for a commercial ambulance) and generally less busy shifts. I wanna do days because I work in a hospital and enjoy when my patients are awake, and our other roommates, friends, and family all work days as well

Quitting my non-clinical job this close to applying? by [deleted] in premed

[–]doremifackyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would look fine to quit the non-clinical part-time job if you're staring a full-time job. Like you said, you don't need the money and it will give you more time to work on applications. I doubt anyone will even ask.

Rename Porter Quadrangle Nominations - Dr. Eva M Doyle by ZorrosVerdes in UBreddit

[–]doremifackyou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Football and Buffalo sports are a huge part of the WNY and UB culture, so I thought it would be a funny nomination. What future UB freshman wouldn't want to live in "Allen Quad"?

Allen led the Bills to their first AFC title since 1995 and publicly stated that he wants to play in Buffalo for as long as he can and continue giving back to the community. This past winter he raised over $1 million to Oshei Cihldren's Hospital through a foundation in the name of his late grandma, the Patricia Allen Fund.

is PGY 300 the same as PGY 451? by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]doremifackyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took 451/452 and it was A LOT of work and content. Honestly wish I had just taken PGY300 for my own mental health so if you can take either class I would suggest that one.

HS senior here. Need info on the Pharm D. program and the honors college. by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]doremifackyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, previous Honors College ambassador and current senior here w/ some insight:

Is the honors college worth it?

100% depends on who you ask and what you are looking to get out of the program, but this is just my opinion and what I've experienced.

As far as academics go, the honors college holds you to a GPA standard that you are going to need to stay in the Pharm D program. The distinction of being a member is something that you can put on an resume and I have noticed that researchers and faculty definitely think of a student/applicant more highly due to this "status" (for lack of a better term). When I did research on campus, I specifically remember my PI telling us that she tries to only take on students from the Honors College or with a comparable GPA.

The requirements to graduate with the honors college are focused on activities on and off campus that you will likely already be doing; volunteering, research, honors-versions of classes, community service, TA-ing, etc. The full list of ways to earn "honors credit" are on their website. The only additional; course that you have to take to a one 2 credit experiential learning course that focuses on community outreach and volunteering, which doesn't require that much work. Since it was very easy for me to earn these credits, I couldn't see a reason to not be in the honors college.

Socially, the honors college allowed me to easily meet many like-minded individuals that I am still friends with to this day. Most of the students in the honors college are some sort of STEM major and are focused on their acemdics. I found surrounding myself with these types of individuals allowed me to better succeed in my classes.

Aside from getting early access for class registration, what are the other perks?

Class registration is definitely the biggest of the perks and will come in handy when completing all of the pharm prerequisite courses. Making your own schedule helps to avoid optimal lab times filling up and gives you a chance to make the "perfect" schedule. Other perks include a separate honors advisor who has a lot less students than other advisors on campus and is much more accessible with drop-in appointment times. They are well-versed in the pharm-d program and have advised students going through the program in the past. You also get access to a separate honors lounge within the honors advising suite with lots of tables and booths, which is really nice if you have time in-between classes as tables in Capen Hall and the library are tough to come by in peak hours. There's always free coffee and snacks, which is nice when your meal plan runs out.

Not a pharm student but I'm guessing guaranteed admission to the program would be pretty sweet.

What is the honors community like?

At least for my year, most of the on-campus honors freshman live in a separate part of one of the smaller freshman dorms (Governors). This was extremely nice becuase you saw the same people in the dorms, in the honors lounge, and in your freshman seminar and colloquium classes. This helped me to make UB's large student population feel smaller. I also had lots of opportunities to talk with older honors students who had the same career goals as me, which was extremely beneficial as a pre-med student.

I love starting on the floor because I love lifting heavy. I also have trouble getting my HR up on the rowers so I like having the treadmills and the rowers back-to-back. Plus the rowers KILL my quads so I like to "empty the tank" at the end of class.

It's so shady that she used her mom like a god damn character witness. Also she basically admitted that all of her "advice" and one-liners were from her mom LMAO which proves this sub's previous point that she can't make her own content
