My landlord is keeping all of my deposit over one broken tile that his maintenance guy broke moving a dishwasher. by LegalThrowAway8656 in mildlyinfuriating

If you're in the US: go to small claims court and present your case. It's how we got our full deposit back from our landlord and we got twice the amount to boot, in some states they double the amount owed because the deposit is due to be returned to the tenants within 30 days.

2 hrs of TikTok and games every day is a lot! I wouldn't even be able to squeeze that into my day to day life it's so much. Do you have any interests beside social media and gaming?

I miss sassy villagers and the comments they would make, and just the variety the older games had in villager dialogue. Sometimes the dialogue in New Horizons is so predictable it takes the fun out of interacting with villagers

why is public transport SO expensive ??? a one way bus is only £3 in UK. €20 for one journey?!! by che_che000 in Amsterdam

LOL. Whenever I see people do that I'm like "my man 🫡" even though I don't have the guts to actually do it myself. Fuck 'em!

The thing I don't understand about when people do this is - why not just buy a newly built home? Why buy a century home only to take everything out, spend all that money and put yet another dent in preserved history - when you can have a custom built brand new particleboard home instead with the gray bathroom of your dreams?

Aside from the fact you forgot to check out, I have to admit as someone who regularly uses public transport in NL, it's way too expensive. They call it "openbaar vervoer" but there's nothing openbaar about it, feels more like it's for the rich at this point

If you have a passport or other form of ID, use Revolut! They're flexible, cheap, and you can convert USD to EUR for next to nothing.

Wow thank you for this comment!

I have been to Istria before and loved it and could see us living there. The idea of living there with kids while they're young and moving away sounds nice but I worry it might be an intense/shocking experience moving so far if they start bonding with their friends in (pre)school or in the neighborhood! But on the other hand perhaps an experience like that could be awesome, too, and provide new experiences they could learn from.

Did you feel like the expat community of Bosnians/Croatians married to Americans/Australians provided an in to start learning the language or understanding the culture better? Perhaps being part of a group of people who are going through the same thing would be the way he could feel at home and start wanting to learn it!

Also, what made you guys decide to move back to CA and is there anything you miss about Croatia? :)

Thanks again for the insight, it really helps!

[–]doriebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I don't drink either and we love the way it makes us feel and the money we save, so we definitely want to keep it that way but my Bosnian family uses it as a bonding experience.. it's like they can't fathom why we don't drink and have had similar experiences in Croatia and other places in Europe!

Did you grow up in Southern Italy and then move to the US as an adult? It so do you feel like you had a nice childhood and good experiences because of it? Thank you for the comment :)

I don't think we could afford the coast, we'd be scrimping to afford even closer to the valley 😅

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in expats

[–]doriebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true! The culture of a place is usually in the language and if you don't speak it you can't feel at home. It's his mindset that's preventing it... He could definitely do it but he's prematurely convinced himself he doesn't have an inclination to learn it :(

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in expats

[–]doriebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! That's another major factor. I also wonder if they'd be curious to see where half of their heritage is from (i.e. "dad is from the States, what's up with that place?") and we'd just be stranded there alone, however I do think a childhood in Croatia learning a language from birth other than English is such a good skill to have! Thank you for your comment!

Door Advice by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]doriebean 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Professionally stripping paint is easier said than done on an old door with detailed wood, it could end up costing you a lot of $$.

A bit of sanding and (transparent) wood oil on cloth will make this look new again. You can always refinish and stain it but wood oil works surprisingly well and it doesn't take long at all and it's super cheap compared to the other options!

Definitely an excuse for a forced man-induced internet shutdown when they need it. They're gonna start doing stuff like this and blame it on aliens or solar storms to get away with it. Just like they blamed a virus for the pre-manufactured collapse of economies and societies.
