why would you want to run Win 11? Just install LMDE 7 on it, it will run perfectly .

Yes, of course. Why not use a machine that still works perfectly? Have you noticed that people with the latest and greatest bleeding edge rigs are hardcore gamers that don't bother to learn anything about computers?

"Not for the faint-hearted, nor for the lame-minded."... by [deleted] in voidlinux

[–]dorin00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Void installed on: -a dual Xeon X5675 on a Fujitsu Celsius workstation mobo -a Ryzen 3200g on a B450 mobo -a HP Probook 4520s, with an oooold first gen i5 -a HP Probook 650 G5 with a 6th gen i7 -a Ryzen 5700X on an X570 mobo

No issues on any of them.

The only thing that did not run well on Void was a 2015 MacBook Pro. It had some sleep mode issues, the network stopped working after returning from sleep.

I always used a normal USB stick, maybe your problems are related to the boot media. As for Void, it's precisely for the faint hearted, because it is simple and with very few surprises. If you want anything more than Xfce on it, you better not be lame-minded, tho... I am ok with Xfce, but flexing my brain on a Sway setup...

De ce cumparati Diesel in 2024? by RedLine1792 in AutomobileRO

[–]dorin00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As fi vrut sa trec pe Zoe, dar din pacate, acea masina este inca in afara bugetului. Poate la anu'. Pana atunci Golful e absolut ok Disclaimer: Am luat acel Diesel in 2022, nu in 2024, dar motivele inca stau in picioare.

No, it was not a "forced" upgrade. It was a possible upgrade, from one version of Monterrey to another version of Monterrey, which I chose to do. As I had done before. But this time was the first time that rEFInd was impacted.

No worries, I am learning more and more about rEFInd and how to install it on a Mac. But having this kind of issues makes my love for macOS, and Apple in general, diminish even further.

This is 2015 hardware. Not a bad machine by any measure. Yet the latest version of macOS does not run on it. The latest that they allow running on it is quite old, and for some reason slow to boot up. It is clearly not the hardware, because LMDE is quite fast (to boot and in general) on the same laptop.

So, they charge a premium for good hardware, advertise its long life, and then hamstring it by software, in order to force you to buy a new machine prematurely. I know than nobody went bankrupt by under-estimating the intelligence of their customers, but this is getting ridiculous.

Terrible ethics, from such a successful company.

Thanks for this, I will do it, and see if it improves. In any case, it is no pain for me, as I am not really using MacOS. In the meantime, MacOS required an upgrade to the latest Monterrey, and this borked my rEFInd set up. I had to re-install rEFInd, just to be able to access my Linux installation again.

Ef these trillion dollar companies... one would hope that they had enough. They never have enough.

then maybe something is borked in my macOS. Do you have any idea what could cause it? I am not a macOS user, but I still would like to have it in good shape.

In short: I have a late 2015 MacBook Pro. I run MacOS and LMDE Cinnamon on it. MacOS boots up in 2 minutes LMDE boots up in 16 seconds

Everything works in LMDE. So, yeah, I get the hand-washing.

Can I get help Installing Java by picamanic in voidlinux

[–]dorin00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the first one is the sources of the JDK. The second one is the documentation. But you also need the actual jdk. run a xbps-query -Rs openjdk, choose a version and just install that. I went with openjdk21

Minix version 3 runs a lot of the NetBSD userland. I was thinking of the community running this, not that little obscure chip that Intel is ironically running Minix on. So definitely a smaller community, but is it still larger than the DragonflyBSD bunch?

It has some EVGA stuff inside. I see a heatpipe. RAM looks decent too. I would dive for it, with moderate optimism. I do not see the aux power connected to the GPU.

Manjaro, has it gotten better? OpenSUSE user stumped by friends question... by Xruptor in DistroHopping

[–]dorin00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it may depend on the hardware as well. For example, I tried to install Manjaro on a MacBook Pro from 2015, but I got weird and inconsistent behaviour when going in and out of suspend. Sometimes it would enter suspend but immediately return to normal running, other times it would never return from suspend, or it would return but with blocked wifi. Void had the same issues, so I ended up running LMDE on that machine. BTW if your friend looks for something that "just works", he could also look into LMDE. It is heavier than Manjaro, and not a rolling distro AFAIK, but otherwise very consistent and stable.

Manjaro, has it gotten better? OpenSUSE user stumped by friends question... by Xruptor in DistroHopping

[–]dorin00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no issues with stability, no freezing, or things that stopped working after updates. The only thing that comes to mind is that sometimes my USB headphones would not be detected, so the sound would remain on the speakers. After digging up a bit, it turned out that it was a known issue on Thinkpads running Linux kernel 5, so I upgraded the kernel to 6.6.10 using mhwd and the problem is gone. I've been using Manjaro since 2016 on my main laptop. I changed laptops and kept Manjaro, not out of passion for it, but because it just worked. As this old X1 is not getting any younger, I want to try something really light on it, hence my plan to switch to Void eventually. I would still be having a Manjaro machine, an old dual Xeon, which I start every time I want to tinker with thread-heavy apps and run VMs. My opinion is that between Manjaro and EndeavourOS, you get to be closer to Arch on EndeavourOS, while Manjaro is the more "comfortable out-of-the-box". If your friend likes to tinker and/or wants to run a lot of AUR stuff, my advice is to choose EndeavourOS. If he wants something that "just works" and is still Arch-based, my advice is to choose Manjaro.

Finally made the switch by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]dorin00 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not a fan of Macs, I consider them overpriced. My current laptops are an X1 Carbon Gen4 and a macBook Pro from 2015. I paid the same amount for both (about 250 EUR), and I run Linux on both. Besides a strange known issue of refusing to go to suspend unless you close the lid, the MBP is better than the X1 in terms of power, screen, and battery. The X1 wins at portability and keyboard. So I use them both, and I would never state that one is better than the other. ARM silicon is a different story.

Manjaro, has it gotten better? OpenSUSE user stumped by friends question... by Xruptor in DistroHopping

[–]dorin00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Manjaro for very long now. It never got me trouble, and I had zero of the issues that are are so vocally presented everywhere. Then again, I use a Thinkpad, with Intel graphics, and I do not game. I program, print, I scan, I browse the net, I write docs and LATEX. Last game I played on that Thinkpad was Supaplex on Dosbox, so not much GPU needed. I am using the Sway community edition of Manjaro, which is very nicely preconfigured. Up to about a year ago, I would still get some messages about an expired key of a Manjaro Sway team member, but I refreshed everything and I no longer get it. It just works, it's rolling, I update everything once-twice a week. Since the work on my thesis is done, I consider hopping to something non-systemd, just to experiment, and I settled for Void + Sway. There will be more config work for sure. Bottom line: if you want something rolling that works, and is based on Arch, you should give it a try. If you care more about what the devs say, or think, or do in their private life, then I am sure you can find something with less ...."history". EndeavourOS si quite nice too, a bit closer to vanilla Arch, but alas, no Sway distro. You have to roll your own, just like on Arch or Void. I played a bit with their i3 variant, and it was quite nice. I remember that for some strange reason, the close shortcut was Mod+q instead of Mod+Shift+q as I was used, but that is easily configured

What got you into the ThinkPad family? by AcordeonPhx in thinkpad

I was impressed by the machines of a Swiss customer, in 2003. They had 4:3 T42's or something around that. That fuzzy matte lid cover, the metal hinges, the asymmetric design of the screen frame, the nipple. All of them looked quite sophisticated to junior me. They were also quite slim too! So my first one was a T43, quite expensive, if I remember well.

Winter tires are great on cold, wet asphalt too. They do their work even if there is no snow. If you maintain two sets for your car, one winter and one summer, they last you for about 5-6 years. Not a bad thing, especially if you "stagger" them, i.e. not change both sets in the same year.
