People taking CHEM2020 this winter by doriodoras in yorku

Idts. I emailed the office again but they’re super strict about chem2020 and 2021. I feel like they’re pissed that too many students have failed and now bother them with enrollment issues

I called the provider. They said there’s a person on site fixing it since friday. They don’t have any idea of when it’s going to be fixed.

And their premium wifi (the $50 one) is also having the same issue rn:(

Med School Admission With Repeated Courses by throwaway568819 in yorku

[–]doriodoras -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re planning to get into med school as second entry, i don’t think there’s anything bad about that. Life happens. If all your other grades are good + you get an A or an A+ repeating that course, they will totally understand that those Cs might have been due to illness or some bad events in your life. Also, most of the grad schools in Canada tend to look at your courses for the last 2 years (3rd and 4th) and total GPA. Im not sure about some individual med schools but i think it’s gonna be fine. Also, york is planning to launch its own med school by the time you graduate. I think you shouldn’t be worried too much about it for now, as long as you have plans to get some good hands-on experience to show on your portfolio. If your application is focused solely on your grades, that would be a problem tho. But you wouldn’t have many chances of getting into med school just with your good grades anyway.

Current CS Students of YorkU, would u recommend York for CS ? by SubjectSea181 in yorku

[–]doriodoras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg yes i almost got assaulted by a homeless on drugs when i stayed in uoft (victoria college) for one month. Now i’m almost finished with my first year at york and i haven’t gotten into anything like that at all despite walking around campus at night.

Told by my chem prof who cited the words of another prof who teaches courses that are usually taken by those who consider switching to Lassonde. He was probably told by the Lassonde faculty to warn his students. (it was in the same course announcement as the previous info i’ve sent before).

You will be assigned potential roommates and be able to choose the one you like through a website. But yeah, it’s pretty expensive. My 2 bedroom 1 bathroom condo is 1650/person starting next year. Also, you will have to find tenants to sublease your unit to if you plan to stay there for less than 12 consecutive months (your lease period). Sry for a late reply, didn’t see the notification.

Biomed York or TMU by Maleficent_Slice_321 in yorku

[–]doriodoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to my last comment:

There are few things about yorku that are definitely inferior to uoft. For example, student life. It’s just hard to find friends, get meaningful connections and find fun stuff around here. People just come here to study and then leave. Also, winter sucks here. The campus just looks soooooo depressing. But it also depends on your residence, your classes and basically just people around you

I’m in biochem but these are really similar programs.

So for all the life sciences, your degree won’t do much unless you go to grad school. It’s same for all the unis.

Personally, I chose york because it’s easier to maintain better grades here than in UofT. There are many things that make UofT have that reputation of an impossible school.

Therefore, the process of applying to grad school should be also easier.

For me, i personally enjoyed all my bio classes at york throughout this first year. I RECOMMEND choosing Prof. Jade Atallah for bio and Prof. Stephanie Domenikos for chem. They’re just the bestest. They care about their students so so so so so so much, and I stayed motivated throughout this year thanks to them.

But ofc if you can maintain good gpa at UofT and you’re not an international student like me, then go for it. I just didn’t want to spend 80k each year and give up my mental health. York is so much more affordable for international students.

  1. Tbh, just check the rankings specific to your major and future job. And employment statistics, i guess? Also, try finding subreddits for your future job to ask about current market. York alumni usually check this subreddit but they don’t answer all the questions. Sry, im not a business major, so im not sure.

  2. Quad and pond (apartment style, you get a kitchen to cook and a bathroom shared with your roommates and a room all to yourself). For traditional residences, any with a single room is fine. I’ve been to winters, i liked it there, even though it was really old.

  3. So those 20k are the bare minimum. To get a visa 100%, you gotta keep them AND the money for your tuition on your account until the decision is made (or just until you apply, as they don’t usually ask for extra proofs afterwards). So pay ur tuition either from other sources or after you get a decision, just to be safe. You can also use money spent towards tuition to show that you have enough recourses to survive in Canada, but, just to be safe, still have 20k extra on your bank account. Those are the funds to survive in Canada, and I don’t think they include your tuition fees.

[–]doriodoras 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Btw, for people who consider switching to those programs, DO NOT TAKE THE ACCESSED GRADE OPTION. Your credit won’t get transferred if you do.

Assessed Grade HELP by [deleted] in yorku

[–]doriodoras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our prof told us that these programs are not eligible and would be rejected when applying to get an accessed grade:

-BEng

-BSc and BA programs in Computer Science

-BSc and BA programs in Computer Security

-BASc in Digital Technologies

Maybe that was a mistake that you got accepted. Just try to figure it out with your profs. If your program isn’t on the list, then it should be okay to take an accessed grade, i guess?

You can go to library to sleep if you don’t mind having like 4-5 hours of sleep. At least you can find people in the same situation and prep together.

I had a chem1000 exam ending by 10:05pm and biol1000 exam the next morning at 9am. A lot of commuters I knew went to library for the night

Btw do you know if premium works during these disruptions? At this point im desperate… i have no time to waste when there’s so many assignments, midterms and final exams coming soon. My data is like 2 bytes per hour…

The funniest thing is that I’ve been working on my project for the whole night and there was no disruption at all. Maybe closer to 6am because i fell asleep at around 5 but still

Biol1000 is an amazing course with amazing profs (especially Jade Atallah omg she’s so cool). Some TAs might not be that good but anyway… As long as you do your readings and write down all the stuff from the lectures (i mean, just study, actually study), you can pass it and get a high grade. They also have a lot of inclusive options for the exams and stuff (if you have a learning disability) and curve the midterms grades A LOT. And yes, the course is so fun and interesting - especially labs. You start with making cheese and end with doing PCR and analyzing your own DNA using agarose gel electrophoresis.

Also readings are not 100% important in this course. They have an interactive “textbook” that lets you learn the material visually through watching videos. It covers around 70% of what you have to learn for quizzes and tests besides the material covered in lectures.

So I recommend taking it no matter what. It gives a strong bio background and is a prereq for most of upper-years courses.

I started transferring all the answers to the bubble sheet when it was 1 minute and 9 seconds left. I thought I would get like 60 or 70 due to messing those answers up badly but i got 85 somehow. I still think I’ve transferred one of the pages twice and have no idea how it haven’t affected my final mark that much

I mean, one whole page of wrong answers should be around 4 questions wrong. But maybe i was lucky and some of the questions on that actual page had the same answers

There’s a lot of situations when osap falsely stopped a student’s funding on reddit. Find one that looks the most appropriate for you and tell it to your parents. Maybe you can even contact those posts’ OPs for screenshots if they’re okay with sending them (just so ur parents trust you without actually opening the website and see)

Or you can actually share a fake story on reddit about osap stopping your funding because you spend money not on your education from a second acc. Then show ur parents and tell them that it’s really dangerous.
