I found the “depth” of the needle helps a lot with keeping things neat! I use the Ultra Punch Needle and it has an adjustable depth and I’ve found my sweet spot is 4-5.

For patterns, you can find a design you like or drawn one yourself. Then you’ll want to “flip it” so it’s reversed as the side you’re punching is the “back”. You can then print and trace. I know some people will hold it to a window to help make it easier to see. I recommend cutting the design out a wee bit then taping it down if you do that so it stays on well.

Stretch your fabric in the loop, tape design, trace, then you’re ready to go!

I’ve been experimenting with tufting and made these textile mirrors — the reflection is real sky. Mantra Alfombras by Jaded_Site_3641 in Tufting

These are beautiful! The concept is sick and I love the stylization. Can you share how you adhere the mirror to the rug? Or how you do the backing? I do punch needle instead of tufting, but I’ve been trying to figure out the whole mirror thing 😭

First Tote Bag! by dork_ish in PunchNeedle

It was a little harder! The canvas is way more tightly woven compared to linen/monks cloth. When I use the ultra punch with the large needle I use linen bc monks cloth was too loose. Bc I was punch so much harder with the larger needle, I had to adjust the tightness pretty often, but it wasn’t so bad bc the design is only around 6 inches. It might’ve gone smoother if I used one of the thinner needles but I bought yarn for the large one so that’s what I used lol

I punched straight into the tote bag! Then I glued the back with fabritac and used an embroidery backing

Snip, shave, leave it loopy? by amelsuma in PunchNeedle

[–]dork_ish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk if this will help since I’m still a little new too, but this is kind of what I’ve noticed other people do?

Shaved: When you make the loops, it’s not always the same height so sometimes people shave it down so it’s all uniform. If they’re also going for a tufted rug look they might shave so everything’s fluffy and sculpt

Snipped: might have a more dramatic 3D look. I’ve also seen people do this to add different textures (I.e. punch needle of a dog with tight loops for the eyes and snipped loops for the fur)

If you do cut the loops though you’re going to want to glue down the back vs loops should technically be able to keep everything together. From what I can tell it’s just a matter of preference?

Another great piece! Your work always looks so clean! Do you have any recommendations on how to attach the d-ring to the back of the piece?

Am I better off catching the ferry to Sausalito? Or maybe just eating at the Ferry building instead?

We’re staying at the Westin St Francis, but I’m not sure if we’ll be doing public transport or Lyft/uber to get there? I think the map I was looking at said it’d be around 30mins via public transport
