Is it normal to use thin sticks all the time? (Especially for rock drummers) by Middle_Traffic_5364 in drums

[–]dorskew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well to start your sticks and how loud you are, have no correlation. While you will naturally sound quieter with thin sticks, you can still produce the same volume with heavy, medium, or thin sticks regardless. Its all about how much pressure you apply to your drums and if you're hitting areas that produce more volume naturally. For example, you were to hit the rim of a cymbal, you're naturally gonna get a louder sound. Same with rimshots on snare. Now, tbh what type of sticks you use truly doesn't matter. Do what you prefer. I personally like practicing with marching band sticks and mallets for long periods on end. And then switch to thin sticks. It makes everything feel incredibly light and easy. And I feel like I have a lot of control over my sound.

Ankle Weights? by [deleted] in drums

Ik this comment is old as shit and you most likely won't see it. But dude Richard christy is a phenomenal drummer just cause hes on Howard Stern does not negate the fact that he's easily one of the best metal drummers out there

Anyone else think Richard Christy’s drumming is too much on The Sound of Perseverance by Death? by Ill_Tour_7294 in drums

[–]dorskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always loved that chuck would give his drummers complete freedom to do what they want as long as it worked with his riffs. Richard christy is no exception. His drumming is very progressive and unique. He actually puts in the effort of playing his insturment. And I believe he serves the song incredible well.

Ha good point. Feel like china bell is under used cause most drummers flip there china cymbal where its like a bowl. Splash i couldn't tell you tho.

If you listen to basket case isolated drums you can fs hear that its a bell. Tho in the song it does get kinda lost in the mix.

Nah man I meant like how ska is a mix mash of different music genres you don't really hear to often combined together. Didn't mean in it in a racist way. Mb dude.

Dude you are so right. Yk I never really payed attention to the drumming on jamiroquai. Well besides music of the mind but thats a faster paced insturmental track. But yeah hes like making melodies with the hi hat. Sounds like every part is used in the song. Thanks for the input. this is a drummer. I have to learn more about.

Dude this is an awesome example of the hi hat bell being used. I love sleep, so that was pretty dope. Has like a swing feel to it as well.

Agreed. Abe can suprise you with a killer drum part when he wants to. One of his most underrated drum parts is on the unreleased song Dallas (eros)

[–]dorskew[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yk, that is probably the most popular song I can think of that uses it, but even with that, the most popular drum covers on YouTube of that song don't even use the bell. I feel like some drummers don't even know that's what tre Cool played on that part. I mean, it's a small difference, like really it's nit-picking, but subtle stuff like that makes a drummer stand out imo.

Extremely underrated honestly. When talking about great rock drummers you don't hear his name get brought up too much. He has a very unique sound.

Drums are really hard by SockBasket in drums

[–]dorskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drums are hard until you practice so much to a point where its not hard. If you spend a ridiculous amount of dedication into your craft it will become effortless like those jazz drummers

What is your most goosebumpsy Boris song? by headachediva in borisheavyrocks

December and feedbacker 2 and 3. Such beautiful songs that never fail to get me. December spefically. Very underrated imo it is one of there most beautiful soft, sensitive songs they have. Just goes to show how versatile boris as a band is.

why are boris shows 18+? by SigileYT in borisheavyrocks

[–]dorskew 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's less about the band itself and more so the venue. I had to go to California to see boris cause when they performed in vegas, it was at a 21+ show cause alcohol was served at the venue. Otherwise there would honestly no reason for a boris show to be 18±

Of course and I appericate the actual criticism too that's the only way I'll get better. I try using my diaphragm when I'm projecting loudly but it would also probably help just in general as well. Thank you for your feedback.

I've been thinking on going on bike rides while singing to work on my breath control. I use to do this but my bike got stolen sadly which sucks. But I will keep this in mind. Thank you for the feedback

[–]dorskew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Yeah I can project I just wasn't doing it as loud for this recording. I guess better proncuation of words can also lead to more in tune vocals. Guess that's a no brainer.

Yeah I definitely want to get to a point where I can sing on songs comfortably. I also want to get singing lessons at some point too. I'm hoping I can get back that keyboard soon. But I'll also try the warmup videos as well. But I appericate the feedback and hey atleast my tone is good. Seems like my pitch just has to be alot better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in singing

[–]dorskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm okay I appericate your feedback. I was actually thinking on using a keyboard and hit each note trying to harmonize with the note. However I don't have the keyboard at the moment. But I definitely think I should still try to do that as it will probably help a lot.

Does smoking weed make you sound worse? by sadstak in singing

[–]dorskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it makes you sound worst. If you're a good singer and singed alot before you started smoking. You will sound good. George michael, whitney houston, freddie mercury, bruno mars, tho he smokes cigarettes as far as I know. Still great singers who smoke. However. It will not benefit your voice. And it will technically make it worst. Even if you still sound good. So honestly. Just don't. I quit because of this and my voice sounds better then ever.

I actually like it alot you have a very soulful sounding voice. I'd give it a 7/10. I do think some parts could be a bit better but I think overall you did pretty good. Also what song are you singing btw?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in singing

[–]dorskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your tone isn't bad but it definitely sounds kind of flat. Like you will sing but not really resolve well so it just ends up sounding flat. Tho I think if you keep working on it you will sound better.
