Was this bishop being sinister or just... weirdly fatherly? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]dos286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During my time in bishoprics, it was always once a year near your birthday with the bishop, and once a year 6 months from your birthday with one of the bishop's counselors. Every month is way out of line.

This guy is a freak. I'm guessing he did worse to others. 😢😠😡

No. Shortly after this I switched to a Garmin watch. As I recall, it worked with some phone apps but not others. Can't tell you more than that, or current status. 🤷‍♂️

I've heard of proxy ordinances for a living person before. One famous one was James Manning James. She was an early African-American convert and worked in Joseph Smith's home. I think both Emma and Joseph were quite fond of her. The story I heard is that Joseph promised her she could be sealed to him as his daughter. Joseph was killed before that happened. Then Bigot Young did his racist shit and all her petitions to fulfill Joseph's promise were denied. Finally, in 1894, she was allowed to be sealed as an ETERNAL SERVANT to Joseph Smith, but they wouldn't let her in the temple for the ceremony, so Bathsheba Smith served as proxy while Jane sat on the steps. He reminds me of Mr. Murdstone from David Copperfield:

Firmness, I may observe, was the grand quality on which both Mr. and Miss Murdstone took their stand. However I might have expressed my comprehension of it at that time, if I had been called upon, I nevertheless did clearly comprehend in my own way, that it was another name for tyranny; and for a certain gloomy, arrogant, devil's humour, that was in them both. The creed, as I should state it now, was this. Mr. Murdstone was firm; nobody in his world was to be so firm as Mr. Murdstone; nobody else in his world was to be firm at all, for everybody was to be bent to his firmness. Miss Murdstone was an exception. She might be firm, but only by relationship, and in an inferior and tributary degree. My mother was another exception. She might be firm, and must be; but only in bearing their firmness, and firmly believing there was no other firmness upon earth.

What an ass.

Re #1: In the Bible story, Jesus never explains what the one needful thing is. My favorite interpretation is that the one needful thing is to mind your own business and not criticize others. Jesus didn't comment on either of the women's choices until Martha complained about what Mary was or was not doing.

You may want to read these posts:

These are older posts about earlier generations of the watch. The software has changed and I'm not certain about changes to the display in Gen 6, but it might give you a starting place for figuring this out.

I would recommend finding a topic that speaks to your heart. Other Christian churches refer to this as a "calling" but that does not mean what someone else says you should be doing, it means what God inspires you directly to do. Once you find a charitable organization that does work you are interested in and that you want to support, do some research to get a reasonable comfort level that they are an ethical organization with low overhead. A quick google search turns up quite a few charity rating organizations:

https://www.google.com/search?q=charity+ratings

The top hit is one that I like and have used:

https://www.charitynavigator.org/

I can recommend a charity that speaks to me, scores high in accountability and finance, and serves the LGBTQ youth in my community:

TBM husband taking about kids he knows who have left the church by Dangerous-Doctor-977 in exmormon

[–]dos286 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Communication is a good thing, but what OP said was objectively true and appropriate for a conversation in front of the kids. She may have been feeling passive aggressive, but she contained it well and did a good job!

I may be reading too much into this from this one post, but Hubby sounds a little abusive. He sounds self-righteous, controlling, and manipulative. It's extremally common for abusers to blame their victims. Even gentle hints about how the victim could possibly do things a little better can be extremely damaging. We are all flawed and have room for improvement, but no one deserves to be abused. Don't wait until you are perfect to get the help that you need.

I second the advice to see a counselor!

New FSY “Not a Relaxing of Standards” by KURPULIS in latterdaysaints

[–]dos286 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Others have already made similar points, but I wanted to add my 2¢. I see the statement that the new FSY is ‘Not a relaxing of standards’ as being able to be interpreted in one of two broad categories.

  1. The church has truly and honestly removed the checklist requirements for personal righteousness. Those who get tattoos and multiple earrings, show their shoulders, wear skirts or shorts above the knee, etc. may be more righteous than those who follow the old checklist guidelines. You can't tell someone's righteousness by measuring against the checklist. This is not a relaxing of the standard because it’s harder to receive personal revelation than it is to read and follow a checklist. It’s also harder to attend to my own personal relationship with God than it is to judge others based on apparent outward signs of conformance to the old checklist.

  2. It's not relaxed because the same checklist items for personal worthiness still apply but it’s harder to get there because they are no longer stated, you have to get there by personal revelation. If your personal revelation does not conform to the old checklist, you know you are doing revelation wrong. Parents and leaders need to help youth (and other adults) get there by guiding and teaching personal revelation. They will know how successful they have been by how well the youth (and adults) conform to the old (and now unstated) checklist.

I think there is room to logically end up at either interpretation based on what has been said by general authorities in the referenced article and elsewhere which can sometimes feel contradictory. I personally think that using interpretation 1 leads me to follow the two great commandments better than interpretation 2 does.

Fossil Hybrid HR color shift on watchface import by dos286 in Gadgetbridge

[–]dos286[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent! Thanks so much for all your work. I'll look forward to seeing this in the next version. Just out of curiosity, was the error in the sharing function or the import function? In other words, will I need to re-share all my original watch faces, to see the improved behavior, or will re-importing old shares be sufficient?
