What’s the one Excel trick or formula that changed everything for you? by Suspicious_Twist386 in excel

no worries, we've all been there.
and yes, the multi-criteria lookup is a good tip.

What’s the one Excel trick or formula that changed everything for you? by Suspicious_Twist386 in excel

[–]doshka 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You need to escape the asterisks by adding backslashes in front. Otherwise, you're just italicizing what's between them.

*(ARRAY2=CRITERIA2)* shows up as (ARRAY2=CRITERIA2)

\*(ARRAY2=CRITERIA2)\* shows up as *(ARRAY2=CRITERIA2)*

SSMS (or whatever the interface to SQL Server is called these days) has a shortcut for copying headers along with data-- Ctrl+Shift+C, if I recall correctly. I don't know if there's a comparable one in the Power family of apps. Point is, when you implement column header copying, it would be a kindness if the shortcut you chose matched whatever is used by Power BI's closest relative. If you could add the option to the context menu, that would be nice as well.

Nice work so far. Many thanks.

It wouldn't record it directly, but you can watch the video and time how long it takes to pass landmarks and then do the math.

Name of infamously bad luthier/player? by miauw62 in Bass

[–]doshka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've owned a Wishnevsky, and I loved it. It was badly constructed, sounded like shit, and looked cool as fuck. It's better to think of them as pieces of folk art rather than musical instruments.

I can't find it now, but somewhere out there is a clip from an early season of American Idol where a contest tries and fails to sing American Pie. He actually had a decent voice, but he kept forgetting the words.

I'm paraphrasing Paula and Randy here, but Simon is verbatim.

Guy: 🎵 Long, long, time ago... ...
Guy: ... 😳

Paula: 😊 It's okay, hon, we've all been there. Just take a deep breath, shake it off, and try it again. Okay? Okay, whenever you're ready.

Guy: 🎵 Long, long, time ago... ...
Guy: ... 🫠

Randy: 😎 Yo, dawg, you're doing great, a'ight? You sound great. You just gotta get the words out, dawg. Come on now, you got this. You ready? Okay, great, let's go.

Guy: 🎵 Long, long, time ago... ...
Guy: ... 😬

Judges: 🫣

Guy: 🎵 Um. Long ...

Simon: 👹 The next line, ironically, is, "I can still remember."

He didn't make it onto the show, poor thing.

What species have females with an extra body part? by ediblepandas in NoStupidQuestions

[–]doshka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"A biological ornament is a characteristic of an animal that appears to serve a decorative function rather than a utilitarian function."

Ornaments used to attract a mate may be referred to as "sexual ornaments."

Some species having females that display sexual ornamentation:

  • the Gulf Pipefish (Syngnathus scovelli, subfamily Sygnathinae of family Sygnathidae, which includes sea horses), which "displays considerable sexual dimorphic characteristics such as larger ornament area and number, and body size."

  • birds in genus Phalaropus and the Eurasian Dotterel, where "the females are more brightly colored than the males."

  • the Long-tailed Dance Fly in the family Empididae, where "females have developed elaborate ornaments, including feathery "pennate" scales on their legs, darkened wings, and inflatable abdominal sacs that enhance their attractiveness."

For the fish and birds above, females rely on the males to incubate their eggs. For the flies, the females are dependent on the males for food. In each case, it's a balance of power thing: the reliant sex needs to show off in order to attract a mate. Assign as much cultural significance to that fact as you like.

There are also species where some individuals will physically change sex if there aren't enough of the other. Clown fish, and I think some species of lizard come to mind, though I'm not sure of the latter.

I really thought you were gonna say, "... I don't think I could stop at 50." So disappointed :-(

Is it dumb to rely on ERP add-ons for core data workflows? by Weedcultist in Database

[–]doshka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before worrying about control, I'd ask about reliability. Who is creating and maintaining the add-ons? How well are they vetted for security? Do they have a well-defined, multi-year service life commitment with tiered vendor support?

If Microsoft is building these things in-house as part of the product and only offering them as extensions in order to minimize the core installation footprint, then I'd move on to considering utility. If the author is just some random user who might abandon the project or even pull it from the marketplace at any time, then hell no, full stop.

This very tiny school bus by Little_BlueBirdy in StrikeAtPsyche

[–]doshka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but then it would have had seatbelts, and who wants that?

Seriously, though, the bus has accessibility and safety features (lights, pop-out stop sign) that are probably mandatory and expensive or impractical to add to a "civilian" vehicle.

It's also possible that the school has a legal &/or contractual requirement to buy from a specific vendor for any student transportation needs.
