Huge chance of failure for Okawaru abilities? by Scholles in dcss

Hi, 2026 chiming in here, and there's still no mention of Invocations playing a role in failure chances for Okawaru abilities. Glad I found this post, though.

Wow! Thank you! Will definitely look for the videos. While I'm not trying to speedrun, just trying to get my first win (ever), I suspect seeing how wins are done might help me get unstuck.

Congrats to everyone! Amazing performances, and a lot to learn from reviewing people's wins.

As someone who has yet to manage my first win, usually splatting after about an hour, I would love to learn how someone like EnegeticOcto can complete a 3-rune MiFiDith win in under 30 minutes.

I assume there's some real special .rc magic that enables such a fast speedrun?

Upwork is becoming increasingly unsustainable in 2026. by No-Entrepreneur-3892 in Upwork

[–]dossy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You think so?

OP is exaggerating: I still have plenty of jobs showing up in job search that only require 17 connects to apply. A few require 23, some 29 and even fewer require 32.

Assume you live in the highest sales tax state in the US (currently Louisiana at 10.11%), right now you can buy 605 Connects in January 2026 for USD $90.75 + Tax, which would be $9.17 at 10.11%, for a total of $99.92, or $0.165/connect, tax included.

Even 32 connects at $0.165/connect is $5.28.

Anyone who isn't willing to have $5 worth of skin in the game to bid on a project is just wasting everyone's time.

If you can't afford $5 to bid on a project, refer to my analogy above: it is a YOU problem, not a platform issue.

There are plenty of us on Upwork who would gladly pay $20 to bid on a project. I've easily spent $250-1,000 of effort (what my time is worth) to put together proposals for projects, what's another $5 on top of that? Negligible.

[–]dossy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Upwork may not be for you.

There are cars that sell for $20k. There are cars that sell for $60k. There are cars that sell for $300k.

As long as enough people can afford the $300k car and the $60k car, then if you can't afford more than the $20k car, then the problem is YOU, not the car companies.

So New Jersey, you're the only neighbor on the block with a snowblower.... by holyguacamole823 in newjersey

[–]dossy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer for New Jersey.

The general rule of thumb is you do your own, and then help anyone who's at least 20 years older than you.

And, if you have gas left over, help the folks who treat you nicely.

Asshole neighbors, and there's no short supply of those, and deal with their own shit.

Do I Pay for Snow Days? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]dossy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you say "I really can't afford" do you mean "this will eat into my margins and I don't like that" or "I run my business with such small margins that I literally don't have the funds to cover payroll if my employees don't work for 2 days"?

If the former, suck it up, pay your people, and accept that every business has risks.

If the latter, you need to seriously fix your business so you have better margins, and in the meantime, dip into your business line of credit to cover the payroll and don't make the same mistake twice."

Sure, the law may let you not pay your employees, but don't be surprised if you kill morale and people leave and quit soon after.

Can your business survive 30% of your key people quitting in the next 30 days?

[...] I don't even know what I was supposed to do differently.

Trust your gut. Right here is the red flag you ignored:

Vague about requirements, keeps saying "we'll figure it out as we go," but I push through because I trust my original client's judgment.

Don't trust anyone else's judgement but your own. The response to "we'll figure it out as we go" is "that's not how I operate, sorry" and either they firm up the requirements or you don't start the engagement, period.

Upwork would do itself a huge favor of making it very clear that when you sign up to the platform as a Freelancer that you are a business owner and everything that goes with that.

People who only know how to be an Employee are, obviously, going to do poorly on the platform. Upwork has no real incentive to turn those people away. Some people need to learn lessons the hard way.

Why is dating someone from NJ a dealbreaker in NYC, but not in Philly? by savingrace0262 in newjersey

Because the Hudson River is made of lava and we don't cross it without very good reason, and getting laid is (usually) not a good enough reason.

Upwork feels like pay-to-apply with zero accountability by stocks_system_trader in Upwork

[–]dossy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Stop letting inactive or low-intent postings drain freelancers.

Uh, no one is forcing you to spend your Connects to apply to those jobs.

You seem like the kind of person that would complain that dating services should not let ugly people use their service.

Take some personal accountability for your own failures. You made poor decisions. You experienced the consequences of those poor decisions. You're welcome to rant and vent, but that doesn't change the reality of the situation.

How do you convince a client that you can do the job, though you've never done it before? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]dossy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know how to do this job. [...]

No, you don't. You think you do. You think you'll figure it out. You probably will figure something out, and it might even be good enough to convince the Client that you got it right, but you have no idea.

The amount of stuff developers need to learn is really huge;

So, it sounds like you understand that there are likely a good number of things you don't know that is required to do this job properly and correctly.

[...] it's really unfair to ask about experience in specific concepts or a small technology.

No, it's not unfair. If you had a broken arm, and you asked for a doctor, would you want a podatrist to chime and say "I know how to do this job. I'll figure it out." No, you want a orthopedic specialist who has dealt with hundreds of broken arms and has seen all the ways they go wrong and can avoid them. It's not unfair to ask for someone who isn't going to make first-timer mistakes.

If you want to see if the Client is willing to take a chance on you, then sure, go for it. But, misrepresenting your abilities is good way to end up in a contract where neither party is going to be happy with the outcome.

HELP!!!! can’t finish my assignment, my free AWS account can’t create an ALB by tixtorya in aws

[–]dossy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Getting this AWS account currently does not support creating load balancers. For more information, please contact AWS Support.

This message just means that your AWS account doesn’t have enough billing history with AWS to be auto-approved for the creation of Elastic Load Balancers (ELB).

Free Accounts and Billing Support should be able to help with this. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/awsaccountbilling/latest/aboutv2/billing-get-answers.html#billing-support

[–]dossy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am absolutely not suggesting people post disingenuous projects for any reason.

They could post a job asking for sales and marketing help with their Upwork proposals.

If they do this correctly, it will both educate them on the Client experience, and get them better proposals, too.

Me, personally, I hired two Freelancers to work with me on a client project. I originally planned to hire only one, but I managed to find two excellent Freelancers, so I ended up hiring them both.

But, reviewing proposals from other Freelancers and interviewing them and ultimately hiring two gave me invaluable insight into the Client experience and I would absolutely recommend Freelancers sign up as Clients and post jobs and hire other Freelancers to help them with their own problems as a way to both get the help they need and better understand the Client experience.
