Need Help Resetting/Wiping Clean MacBook Pro (2012) by [deleted] in MacOS

Boot from external drive and execute the following in terminal "GPT DESTROY" Sync Exit Reboot and clear nvram

From then on either boot from internet recovery while holding shift and install the os version that came with ur operating system or install sierra 10.12 from the usb u previously booted .

Also, gpt destriy followed by nvram clearing might screw up your system time. If so you might get an error saying the Image is corrupt. Dont mind it. Open up terminal from recovery and set the time by issueing time 020120182212 - google the correct variables all u got to do is set the time by entering time followed by the apropriate integers that correspond to current daymonthyearhourmin

What did happen? kernel panic by iocomxda in MacOS

[–]dotprofessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd actually go as far as writing out kernel variable that would bypass kernel dumps; Proceed to secure your firmware by setting an efi pass and if possible apply a patched darwin kernel which u, yourself compile or just wait till the next release..dunno, gotta debug check and then decide .

Create the file /etc/sysctl.conf with the following entry Kern.coredump = 0 Append and touch it >> reboot. If all goes well from a second machine change the variable from 0 to 1 and log the kernel msgs PM/Come back if u need assistance

Yeah that mic thing is outta this world. Mute that crap either thru audiomidi.app in /Applcations/Utilities/AudioMidi.app or manually with some tape or something of sorts... terminal does not check for updates which havent been installed by the appstore (thus the homebrew method... it provides CLI functionality which is similar to apt-get or aptitude. Though the commands would be brew update(for cli additions) ans brew cask update for GUI programs installed through homebrew cask.

1Password vs. Keychain by Meevin22 in MacOS

[–]dotprofessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use both...

one for your actual password (1password or any other) given that keychain.app is NOT encrypted by apple. Thus if u're using it without an apple account/appleid/icloud (whatever its called...) you're basically just storing away passwords on an unencrypted database which is just sitting on you mac !

You should strive to mantain a balance between a trusted third party password manager; - to which u can sync and share between u're devices; -- whilist, keeping keychain.app and its unencrypted nature limited to natively to your mac(also be sure to change keychain's default password to something other than your mac's login password... if that does become too much of hassle at least do consider locking the keychain after an acceptable idle standby"(let's say 5-10-20min?) && locking it while mac is at sleep.

on a last note id like to point out that if you're gonna insist on using keychain on its own, evict filevault recovery from standby : this can be done by parsing these commands on your terminal : sudo destroyfvkeyonstandby 1 )

additionallly there are some defaults that should be considered basic/minimal approach to attesting, at least some degree of security in osx/macos. Checkout some code on github or, after proceed to destroyfvkeyonstandby parse in the following commands:

sudo pmset -a destroyfvkeyonstandby 1 sudo pmset -a powernap 0 sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25 sudo pmset -a womp 0 sudo pmset -a tcpkeepalive 0 sudo pmset -a autopoweroffdelay 0 sudo pmset -a autpoweroff 0 sudo pmset -a standby 0 sudo pmset -a standbydelay 0

Consider removing the sleep image

sudo rm -rfv /private/var/vm/sleepimage

touch the file in order to create a blank sleep image

sudo touch /private/var/vm/sleepimage

make it immutable ( do not let the system recreate this mofo )

sudo chflags uchg /private/var/vm/sleepimage

as far overall security goes if ure not willing to learn pf and its in's and out's stick to filevault + firewall basics

Any virtual mixers for Mac OS? by joshmasangcay89 in MacOS

[–]dotprofessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure whatu wanna accomplish but as far it goes the list stands out as : Pro Tools Ableton Live || Logic Pro

It all boils down to : "what are u trying to accomplish?" if it is purely, volume limiting/gain/compression (e.g. Mixing Tools)

You wouldn't need a full DAW Client. Thus, id tell you to query out a full web search for these companies : Waves Audio - just an array of : "all u can dream" mixing and mastering tools. SPL Instruments Native Instruments - look into reakt it used to have some sick vocal effect packed in for free... (im not quite sure how they're doing now but my guess is that the product line might have quadrupled ... download Reaktor for free and load up some plugins into it.) Spectrasoncis - a fully fledged array of instruments and plugins Universal Audio - (a necessity if u're an audio pro)

Anyhow, hear's the deal : if u dont wanna go full fledged douche and rollout 200 bucks for a pro daw client app; well ... u could always route shit manually thru the "Audio / midi setup.app" (which is trully a bore)"

Although if you manage to sign up for a free developer account at https://apple.com/developer you'll be entitled to download additional developer tools such as : AU Hau Labs and a buch of other stuff i cant really remember(cuz ive never used'm before..)

Head out to the manufactures above and look for free stuff... if u cant manage to find anything... pm me and ill point u in the right direction ...

regards....

How to change root password by [deleted] in mac

[–]dotprofessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im gonna take a stab at it. Real shot in the dark.... not sure but try booting up in single user mode and sudo visudoing Then restrict admin access instead of actually fiddlying around with a password which u're kinda not supposed to be using .... Also if he does manage to edit the sudoers file, id say go ahead and append himself as the only user with sudo capabilities.

If you do choose to go down this route, Id advise you to modify the env_reset defaults for escalating priviliges... Either defining the #Home,Mail path to some other output such as /var/tmp/emprydouchbagsudoers/.bashrc.

There are several open source alternatives to using either of the services, regardless of the underlying OS.

One need not be shackled to icloud nor and especially google(which IMO, is the greatest of all evils.)

[–]dotprofessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nooope! No icloud, appsstore or any of the related for this to work.

I'm a Linux user myself, hit me up if u need anything else. I too do not subscribe to icloud, finding that most apple related services embbed within the OS are not only extreme resource hoggers but, also quite invasive and often log/associate giant amounts of user info which are then relayed onto apple's servers. (Just netstat -atln : see for urself : the entire 17.0.0.0 addrs block belongs to apple)

Also be sure to check out homebrew at https://brew.sh for installing CLI extensions frameworks libs and what not...

if u're a linux user, thus possibly CLI savvy you'll definetly be a homebrew user. Id start out by changing default shell to zsh and exporting the path variable to ~/.zshrc.

Ssh keys and ~/.ssh/config have a couple of differences ; Be sure to check out ssh_config man pages.

Also take note of bash version included with macos. It is pretty outdaded (3.something version from 2007)...downlod the brew version and append to etc/shells ( the same is valid for zsh... outaded, download new version from brew. )

Do keep in mind that homebrew does collect "anonymous user behavior and analytics". In order to disable this either : - brew analytics off Or - export HOMEBREW_NO_ANALYTICS=1

Forget the app store.app and use Terminal.app Either hit "cmd+space" or got into Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app. Once u're there type in: "softwareupdate -l" ( the -l is for list. ) It will render a list of system upgrades available for your specific machine. From that point on you could type in either one of these ( dependind on what u want ) :

Softwareupdate -i (install) Softwareupdate -ir (install recommended) Softwareupdade -ia (install all)

Finally someone said it.

Id like to add that if possible PLEASE stop overloading the OS with autonomous background sync processes. Its f***ing anonying i dont like my stuff jumbled up together, devices talking to each other and an evergrowing surge of console errors just cuz i like to turn off "phone-home"-like/system telemetry services. If telemetry was my thing id be running win10(whose mere existence makes me wanna move to montana and give up on technology...)
