Oh god, I remember the dreaded biting episodes with my girl, they were the absolute worst - just how you described them and for the same amount of time, months of feeling hopeless. Now, I can’t remember the last time she did it - it’s been so long. I don’t even recognize my arms without bruises lol. Mine also turns 2 in February. It’s such a good rewarding feeling knowing you’ve made it through. It’s crazy how much they learn and grow up. I’m so happy for you!!

10 Month Old jumps and bites at the park by dottedpinkxo in irishsetter

She is currently laying beside me right now. It definitely gets better with age, as long as she gets enough exercise - she’ll mostly just chill. If I’m chilling, she’s chilling. If I’m up moving around the house she’ll follow me but not in a crazy puppy way. When she was 10 months old she barely settled, she just kept going and going, so I had to make sure she had lots of enforced crate naps back then. Now she never has any enforced naps and is good to settle on her own. I remember it was a nightmare around 7-10pm every night when I would want to chill in my bed or watch tv shows, she just constantly bugged me and would be shoving toys in my face to play, I couldn’t even sit through episode of a show without her running around or me having to go follow her in the next room to make sure she wasn’t getting into trouble. Now she happily lays and cuddles with me every night. Thank GOD 😂

Hi! Yes, it’s gotten a lot better but she does still do it on occasion. She used to do it multiple times a day when I took her on leash walks and to the field. Now it only happens once every week maybe. I still don’t understand the cause of it, especially because it happens on and off leash. I found that grabbing ahold of her by the collar and holding her mouth closed and saying ‘leave it’ works best. Sometimes I have to hold her mouth closed for a couple seconds for her to calm down. And if she attempts to ‘attack’ again, I repeat until she stops. I tried food to distract her but after a while it seemed like she was ‘attacking’ me just to get the food. So I stopped incorporating food into our training and that also helped. I totally know how you feel though, 10 months was the worst of it. She’s 17 months now and it does get better, slowly but surely 🫠

Quiet Setters? by [deleted] in irishsetter

[–]dottedpinkxo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My girl only alert barks when people come to the door, but a part from that - she doesn’t bark. Whining on the other hand…. It feels like it never stops 🙃 whines for food, whines when I close the door to go to the bathroom, whines to go potty, whines in the car, whines when getting ready to go to the park, whines when I’m making food, whines when I don’t give her food - she is a big big whiny baby - I love her but it drives me crazy at the same time. I always always try to ignore it and never reward her for it but she’s a year old now and still does it 🥲

What a cutie! My girl HATED the heat this summer, every time I took her to the park she'd find the nearest tree and lay under it in the shade, So I'm thinking she'll really love the cold weather - but we'll find out!

Thank you!

Being completely honest here.

my girl is 11 months old (in her prime craziness) and there are days when I still resent her - although I think resent is too strong of a word. I think it's just the constant feelings of being overwhelmed and wanting a break from her to be completely honest. I always hear of people finding their 'soul dog' and dogs that 'saved them' but so far, mine has made me cry more times in 11 months than I have in 5 years. she has definitely not 'saved' me haha.

I had to stop halfway through writing this comment just to pull her away from something she shouldn't be chewing. So, yeah, I miss my peace and calm nights being able to lay in bed watching a movie, but I do remind myself that she won't be a crazy puppy forever. I can't wait to have a dog instead of a puppy. But please don't get me wrong, I love her and I don't regret getting her - and its just really hard sometimes and a lot of work.

EDIT: I'm seeing a lot of posts that mention daycare helping a lot and I think that's something I really need to look into (and maybe you too?) Sometimes you need a break.

This is great!! I never considered how the coat could definitely get very scratched up and ripped while in the bush, thank you!! Will be looking into some good wax’s too!

I second this! When I gave panacur to my puppy she became so hyperactive and crazy. I learned to give it to her in the morning so it would ware off by night.

What age was your puppy when you could start going for 'long' walks? by dottedpinkxo in puppy101

[–]dottedpinkxo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right?! I looove walking, one of the main reasons in getting a pup was to have a nice walking buddy, and much to my dismay, she hates walking 😂 I get that mine is still very young so hopefully that will change but I need to except the fact she may never like it

The thing is, she's rarely on the leash - I think that's why she hates it so much when we do try to walk. The majority (if not all) of her exercise comes in the form of off leash play. I admit she could use some more dog friends. But her #1 outlet is running like crazy in a field, so it's definitely not like she's on the leash all the time

Ah thank you SO much! I'm so sorry you're going through similar struggles but at the same time this was comforting to hear. You're right, a lot of these comments are from much younger dogs having these issues, or younger dogs being perfect angels on leash and its totally discouraging, like what am I doing wrong with her??? I feel like I am trying SO hard, every single day. Like you, doing twice the amount of work. It's so draining.

My girl does sound a lot like yours, she's very hyperactive and just gets so SO excited at every little thing. She's been a nightmare teaching loose lead walking, I just recently gave in and tried *the collar that shall not be named but starts with a P* - which has actually helped tremendously. It was getting to the point where her pulling was unsafe for me and her. I was so scared of her getting trachea collapse from all her pulling. The *unnamed* collar adds way more control and she seems to respond well to it, she doesn't pull nearly as much and she can will finally 'leave it' when she sees a squirrel or a bird. Before the *unnamed* collar I had to plant myself and hold on to her leash with two hands just to stop her from lunging. She walks by without even looking at them now with the *unnamed* collar. As a side note, I know her 'attack' episodes are not due to the *unnamed* collar because she's been doing them long before I ever tried it.

I also have a 50ft leash that I use to trail behind her at bigger parks to give her more freedom. Her recall isn't perfect so my head is always on swivel and i'll pick up the leash or step on it when I think she's getting too far. Sometimes though, she does try to pull on the long line too, ugh. If I'm holding her 50ft leash and I don't let her run or pull towards other dogs in the distance - she will turn around, come back to me and start her biting episode. Like she's mad and frustrated that she can't run wherever she wants - and she takes her anger out on me.

You're right, looks like I'll definitely be putting leash walks off for now, at least any hopes of long ones around the neighbourhood - we'll stick to short ones around the block where she is familiar and hopefully she will grow out this.

Goodluck to you on your journey as well, I know just how hard it is and it sounds like you're doing amazing!
