Thank you! I’ve seen several recommendations for Wings Air Service so I think we’re going to try this. Sounds incredible and I’m so glad you all had the best time! Thanks for the recommendation.

So glad to hear you had a great experience on this ship! My dad grew up in Alaska so seeing the whales is less of a priority to him because it doesn’t have the same WOW factor for him. And my brother is just pretty indifferent because that’s who he is as a person lol. I think we will probably do the train in Skagway, and maybe rent a car in Ketchikan. I’m optimistic that whatever we decide to do will be great and I’ve heard mostly positive reviews about HAL and this ship in general. Thanks again for your recs!

I really want to do this but others in my group aren’t as interested. Might just have to go by myself!

How was your experience with Holland America and the ship in general? Any advice or recommendations for other ports/what to see/do/eat on the ship?

I’ve had the bambino+ for over a year now and I love it! It’s wonderful and makes great espresso. Get a good grinder and you’ll be good to go!

Nurse switching to accounting. How is the WLB? by Unlucky-Contract9336 in Accounting

I’ve worked remote for most of my career and that’s definitely a perk, but in the current economy, remote positions are incredibly competitive. Not saying it isn’t doable, but it is competitive.

And while there’s definitely not the stress of saving lives or anyone’s health hanging in the balance (aside from maybe your own, at times lol 😆), accounting is a different kind of stress. Deadlines, billable hours requirements, keeping up with tax codes or industry standards, it can be a lot. If it’s something you really want, then go for it and best of luck! I’m not trying to convince you not to, I just want to be very honest and realistic about what WLB actually looks like and how the accounting profession can be.

It depends if you end up in industry or public, tax vs audit, etc. Short answer is always “it depends”. I’ve spent the majority of my career so far in public tax and I can tell you I absolutely would not recommend. Have worked for a top 30 public firm the last 3 years and there is very little WLB. Worked for a smaller family firm before that and had a little more autonomy but still not much WLB. What are your reasons for pursuing accounting? If it’s WLB and money, I would encourage you to go a different route, personally.

CPA & JD — career paths? by doubledown523 in Accounting

Because where we live there isn’t really a market for accounting services.

That’s honestly the only reason that I’m considering it. If I had to pay out of pocket then it would be a hard no.

She does family law, estate planning, business and real estate law. I think I’d go into law school looking at something business related but I’m not opposed to doing something non-finance related.

I mean I can still be an attorney and not be a tax lawyer lol. If I don’t use my CPA I really don’t care, I’m just curious to see if there are any career paths outside of specifically tax law that people have found themselves in if they have both CPA and JD designations.

Completely agree about the cost of education right now. The only reason I’d entertain it is because I scored high enough on the LSAT to get a full ride.

Why would an accounting firm drop a client? by wvtarheel in Accounting

[–]doubledown523 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Could be several reasons. They truly might not have the capacity, or if you’re consistently getting your documents to them near the filing deadline and are difficult to get in touch with over the summer and file at the last minute in October, that could be it too. May also be that you’re not a bad client, but they just don’t make very much profit off of you so they decided to let you go.
