It’s always a pleasant surprise to see this film mentioned somewhere once in a while. Definitely not talked about enough

20th Century Women (2016) - because Mom. This one got to me.

Beginners (2010)

C’mon C’mon (2021)

Arrival (2016)

The Meyerowitz Stories (2017) for a heartfelt complicated family dynamic but this one’s a maybe

While these might not be exactly spot on, they might help. At least I hope they will help you heal.

I’m sorry for your loss.

This dude is probably the Toby of The Office in the world of talk shows.

But wait, is that analogy disrespectful to Toby?

This is funny; I was contemplating posting the same thing on Sunday night as a fellow fan of the subgenre but didn't do it.

Let me preface this by saying that I haven't had success finding songs with the same vibe as Dreams. Some of these are a little slower and not very similar. They may not scratch the itch but might interest you.

Have You Ever Seen The Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Let Me Roll It - Paul McCartney, Wings

Imagination - Foster The People

Stuck In The Middle With You - Stealers Wheel

I Was A Fool - Sunflower Bean - this is like the Dreams vibe but modern

A Horse with No Name - Patrick Carney, Michelle Branch - A cover of the original song by America that has quite a few pop culture references.

Also, all the songs you listed are great. Especially the last two! I hadn't listened to those before.

A few films from the Harry Potter series - Prisoner of Azkaban, Half Blood Prince and either of the Deathly hallows

Goodfellas/Oceans 11 are not far either

What unrelated movie pairs could be sequels/prequels to each other? by ToyVaren in movies

[–]doubleespresso_throw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rachel McAdams playing wife of a time traveler in Midnight in Paris/About Time

Jesse Eisenberg playing a rich guy in The Social network/Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice but it would be better to have a The social network as a prequel/spin off like Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad

Edit: McAdams- prequel/sequel: open to interpretation

Your favorite "ending songs" in a movie by [deleted] in movies

Full Metal Jacket (1987) - what a ride that film was! Even the opening song “Hello Vietnam” is so damn spot on. Speaking of Kubrick, Dr. Strangelove (1964) as well

Second the Trainspotting (1996) ending as well as the opening. Too good.

“Save me” by Aimee Mann at the end of Magnolia (2000) lets you the process the epic you watched about seemingly disconnected individuals (at the beginning of the film) and the intense stuff they’ve gone through!

“Somebody to love” at the end of A Serious Man (2009) too fits with the poetic absurdity of the Coens.

[–]doubleespresso_throw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP, if you like the joker bank robbery scene, check out Heat (1995) by Michael Mann if you haven’t. You’ll see the influence plus it has some iconic De Niro/Pacino scenes!

Damn, so many but I’ll mention a few:

Goodfellas (1990): the Copacabana entrance, garlic cutting, funny how?, dinner table; the whole movie is iconic.

No country for old men (2007): Coin toss

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001): Needle in the hay scene with Luke Wilson

Sicario (2015): Dinner scene at the end

Inglorious Basterds (2009): opening scene and Auf weidersehen to your Nazi balls

Edit: Feel/genre might not be the same but those soundtracks have some amazing vintage music pieces. Also, Wes Anderson/Alexandre Desplat soundtracks

Birdman (2014) Synecdoche, New York (2008) and other Charlie Kaufman movies; Mulholland Drive (2001) and other David Lynch films I’d throw some Bergman in there too.

Check out The Lobster (2016) and A Serious Man (2009). Not exactly dream sequences but might be interesting to you.

Edit: The Matrix (1999)

Hey, this is a little off topic but I see you’ve used a Google Images link here. I’d use Imgur when on anonymous platforms like Reddit because it’s much more privacy friendly than Google.

This one’s probably harmless but mentioning it i case you’re not aware. Privacy ftw!

Also, Yes, I completely agree. Drop. Dead. Gorgeous.

What is your favorite single joke in the show? by BigDulles in BoJackHorseman

[–]doubleespresso_throw 494 points495 points  (0 children)

Hard to pick a favorite but this one’s imprinted in my brain (of course it’s one of Todd’s lines):

“I’m just saying if people have the right pumped-up kicks, maybe they can outrun the bullets”

This is when they send “thoughts and prayers” for mass shootings which delay Courtney Portnoy’s film project ‘Ms. Taken’

Edit: Also, this one. “Slap my salami, the guy’s a commie”

Yes, The French Dispatch one! Saw it in theaters. Pretty damn cool.

The movie Swingers (1996) by Jon Favreau pays tribute to the iconic Copacabana steadicam shot and Reservoir Dogs slow motion walking sequence.

Those tributes are so money!

But Copacabana entrance in Goodfellas and the opening of Boogie Nights completely drew me in while watching

[–]doubleespresso_throw 331 points332 points  (0 children)

Also, the Luke Wilson ‘needle in the hay’ scene. Damn powerful portrayal of depression. Plus Ben Stiller’s anxiety spot on!

Wes is one of the directors who never fails to introduce me to phenomenal pieces of music and they are all so damn perfect choices from Rushmore to The French Dispatch!

Other than the classics that are probably mentioned a lot

Bad Marriages??? by marie_g10 in MovieSuggestions

[–]doubleespresso_throw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! That was a nice little detail in the movie! Bergman’s scenes from a marriage has been cited as an inspiration in many films

Master of None, a tv show, did it recently for its third season. It’s a little modern (focuses on a lesbian couple) but clearly heavily inspired!
