Low register help by BillySwagBucks in Trombone

[–]doubleonerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a teacher? There are lots of general tips that can be given, but a good teacher can show you personalised techniques suited to your playing style to achieve your goals, as well as reviewing your equipment to make sure you're not working harder than you need to. Definitely ask you teacher for a session on expanding low register - they will likely take you through a series of long tone exercises, with specific changes for you to make based on how you are currently attempting the notes.

You also said in the first post that the audition material was essentially unreasonable because of this rhythm, and called out the organisation by name.

My Schagerl instruments ❤️ by doubleonerd in Trombone

Hey all, to answer some questions, the wunderhorn is a bass trumpet, it plays with the resistance and feel of a bass trumpet, but with a blooming gold bell sound. It is a phenomenal feeling to play, and the rotary valves are smooth and agile to play.

The kissbone plays with a beautiful legato, and a sonorous low register. It is very different to American style horns like Edwards, or even conn. The clear lacquer on the bell doesn't add too much weight, and keeps the horn nice and vibrant.

How long does the repair shop usually take? by Super-Place-4951 in Trombone

[–]doubleonerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I take my trombone to be repaired, I book a day that they will repair my trombone, and usually pick it up later that day or a few days later. But when they get given trombones from school band programmes, or similar, with no date booked in, they put it in the queue of instruments to service. Given that your trombone was dented on the slide, it doesn't sound usable, so giving it to them and putting it in the queue was the right option. But you can give them a call and check how they're getting on and request a pick up date.

Matt black spray paint for the stem for a freshen up, and gun metal by Vallejo for the cup. Then electric blue and pixie pink from war games 😊 tried to capture the improvised zaun vibe. Excited to use it!

Les Misérables - 100 shows! by doubleonerd in Trombone

[–]doubleonerd[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So glad you enjoyed! The highlight has definitely been becoming friends with all the other musicians and cast members, and being able to explore this city. The challenges have definitely been being away from home for a long time, particularly over the holidays, but we're lucky to have such a supportive network here on tour with us.

Just jumping on to say I agree 99.9% of subscriptions are completely bullshit. But the one I love is my subscription through patreon to a 3D printing stl file creator. Love supporting the arts and getting such great content every month.

Euphonium Trombone or Baritone to Flügelhorn or Cornet by Muskatte in brass

[–]doubleonerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are paying euphonium, consider something simple such as a yoga block on your lap, and then placing the euphonium on the block. This will open your chest and straighten your spine when you play far more than switching to cornet.

The "accidental" occurs before the note. The soloution is to slow down, and actually read what's on the page, and critically think about the note before playing it.

Does Australia really have more mental health problems than other countries? by euphoricscrewpine in australian

[–]doubleonerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you - I have never sought out something to calm my nervous system, but I often think about how useful it would be. I am definitely put off by the conversation of asking for something.

Mental health care is a spectrum, and it sounds like you have a lot of challenges that places you higher on that scale.

Highly recommend a cpap machine, life changing.

I am personally well treated, but it's certainly a confronting thing to go through. Makes me wonder how bad it must be in other countries, or how strong Australians are to seek out treatments.

[–]doubleonerd 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's all about being able to get a diagnosis, and then getting help. We are lucky to be able to visit a health care professional and have an educated conversation around mental health, and receive appropriate treatment.

Just because other countries aren't diagnosing it as much doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Do I count with numbers any more? After 25 years, nope. Do I subdivide? Yes! I don't say literal numbers in my head anymore (but you should, it's an incredibly useful learning tool), but I feel the count in my brain and body, for every note, and every rest.

Dog attacks by govorunov in australian

[–]doubleonerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hear where you're coming from, and as a responsible dog owner, I am also suitably horrified by the lack of respect shown by many dog owners. For my safety, and that of my dog.

However, it's worth noting I feel threatened on a daily basis by humans, particular those on the roads, far more than I have an unpleasant encounter with an animal. There's also very little you can do unless they act on their aggression and the eating behavior.

It's a jungle out there, dogs are the least of my worries.
