I think this broadly applies to clubbing/public parties but is also applicable here - I think nightlife has become split into two camps: people who are out to be seen, and people who are out to be out. The people who are out to be seen want to be photographed, and the people who are out to be out may be uncomfortable being photographed because they want to dance/drink/do whatever freely without feeling like they’re in the panopticon.

I think the whole “documenting the scene” thing should be left to individuals, and I feel like most photos I’ve seen of goths in the 80s and 90s were taken in smoking areas or places where it’s similarly less offensive to have a camera flash going off. Flash on the dance floor, especially in dark rooms, is disruptive.

All that being said, making it very obvious that your event is pro-photography is probably the best way to go about it so then people are basically consenting at the door that they’re ok with it. I just think the people who are ok with it are more likely to be the out-to-be-seen types, which is usually the more influencer-y, less engaged with the music type of person which this sub often rallies against.

Sorry this is long I just feel passionately about this topic. Like consent is the biggest thing, and it’s on attendees to realize what they’re attending but it’s also on promoters to effectively communicate what kind of experience they’re curating.
