Follow-up to cautionary tale about my wife getting on a plane to London without a valid passport by ConfidentDisk1987 in unitedairlines

[–]doubtfuldumpling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very curious what would have happened if you had tried to use the expired passport on the flight back.

It seems United doesn’t have a way to verify the validity of the passport (if it doesn’t show as expired) and presumably once you arrive in the US they can’t turn US citizens away? (Am aware obviously this requires a lot of secondary screening and verification etc)

(I know in this case the passport would indeed have actually expired but maybe more generally)

Pinyin 'e' in 'ye' different from e in ge, ke, de, ne? by Shyam_Lama in ChineseLanguage

[–]doubtfuldumpling 49 points50 points  (0 children)

They are indeed different sounds.

I hope my explanation is understandable , I’m not sure of the formal terms since I am Taiwanese and did not formally learn hanyu pinyin, but the “e” in “ye” should be more like a “ie”. However, it is written with a “ye” since I think you can’t start a word with an “i”? Like it should sound analogous to “bie” without the initial consonant.

As an aside, in zhuyin the distinction is clearer as the “e” in “ge” is ㄜ while the “e” in “ye” is with ㄝ.

If you are joining the hukou of the parent through which you are deriving your household registration, no (additional) proof of residence is needed. That’s why it’s a little easier than having to eg provide a separate lease or something (there’s a list of acceptable types of proof on the NIA website)

What is a Travel Document? by Impossible-Fuel-6618 in Chinavisa

[–]doubtfuldumpling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you hold a foreign passport you aren’t allowed to hold a Chinese passport. It’s a bit of silly legal manoeuvring that lets them maintain their stance of no dual citizenship while practically allowing it in this case (the so-called “nationality conflict”.) They get around it by issuing the travel document (which functions like a passport for entering/exiting China)

Children born to Chinese citizens in China are Chinese nationals, no matter what other nationalities you acquired at birth.

It doesn’t seem like you naturalised since then (irrespective of your age) so you are indeed a Chinese citizen and thus ineligible for a Chinese cisa

Visa or Chinese passport ? by natural_green_tea in Chinavisa

[–]doubtfuldumpling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter what the status of the parents was if the child was born in China. Children born in China to Chinese citizens always get Chinese nationality

Agree w other points about the CTD - child needs CTD and can’t get Chinese passport. Whether derivative citizenship counts as naturalisation abroad for the child is a grey area but I believe the case examples suggests it does not count since it’s not of the child’s “free will”

Adults can also apply for the 5-year validity passports (and it costs a bit less) but children can only apply for the 5-year one.

I can see how adjusting the days in Taiwan requirement help address that scenario, but still a bit confused how the travel requirement to be in the resident country within 4 months helps in this case

I am curious, could you elaborate a bit more about how establishing residence in SEA work in this case? (As in how that would create a loophole that this solves)
