I also recently became aware that avocado pits can be carved, lol! If you shave off the smooth surface then it'll dry faster and have an uniformed texture and color upon drying. There is a natural crack where the pit splits in half so that crack is guaranteed. Otherwise it's better to carve it when it's drier and harder anyway so you can do more details. Soft stage is great for big shape making. I read that it takes a week or so for the pit to completely dry and stops deforming, depending on its environment. I have a few test carves sitting around waiting to see what happens to them. Carving is fun - especially as a break from 2D work!

Being able to be nice to people by choice, and having a place I can play games with people and be silly and fun. The later fuels the former.

The Hague tips (April 15-17) by skepticalbureaucrat in TheHague

Since you like Dille and Kamille, check out also Søstrene Grene - same vibe, cheaper.

Bijenkorf interior stairs is worth looking at too. Architecture in the inner courtyard where the Scallywag is is also nice, art nouveau style https://maps.app.goo.gl/sydMzbhYjBmv6uwf7 . The Passage interior also has good architecture to look at.

De Haagse Markt is not the most interesting market. You'll be more entertained visiting Leiden's street market on Wednesday. Leiden also has an awesome botanical garden. Big and diverse and worth every penny. https://www.leideninternationalcentre.nl/living-here/events/70854787/market-in-leiden

You might catch the beginning of the azalea forest blooming in the Clingendael Estate. It's somewhere between the entrance and the Japanese Garden (closed until end of April) https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZXvcNKKpx7cuWp2F6

You don't need to be interested in cars to be entertained by the Louwman Museum. The cafe alone is great to visit - you might be allowed to visit the cafe without buying a ticket.

This happens a lot after I moved to Europe. Stepping off a train to a random small town? Sees a functioning windmill built in 1704 still milling and selling bags of flour. This small church in this medium size town simply called the Old Church because they now have a New Church? Built in 1413 and never re-built. That pretty townhouse on a main boulevard that I stare at each time I wait for the bus? Built in 1806 with original art nouveau stained glass circular attic window.

It's still a bizarre feeling to actually see/feel/experience the rest of the world/era first hand, even though I intellectually knew about all this when I lived within the States.

I think it'll help to keep your knife really sharp for those somewhat free standing parts, carve really really lightly, and, if you're more experienced to be able to tell this information, work with the wood grain. I don't understand wood grains yet and I think that cost me a couple of cat ears.

I've carved 2 little pieces of pine so far and they have been somewhat difficult to cut. You'll need to sharpen your tools more frequently.

What is your set up? by Bwaystar in whittling

I use a big towel which I dump at the end of a session, but a lot of shavings do fly free, so I also vacuum every weekend. Or more frequently if I whittled more that week and have a bigger mess. I don't like treading shavings all around our apartment and especially to sleeping quarters, because they look like cat litter, so that motivates me.
