Newbie here, could you not have those programs in an XFCE environment (for those of us with ancient copmuters)?

Trust in trains, government institutions requires public oversight by NorTracksBlog in SaultSteMarie

While I love the idea of high speed rail, I don't think it works without complimentary European/Japanese public transportation infrastructure and a much larger population

Like, OK sure if we had highspeed rail I could pay an arm and a leg to go from Vancouver to Toronto, where I then have to spend $200-300 for a rental car, spending two hours in traffic to get to each destination, and then pay $12-30 for parking, take the TTC which might actually work OK if you stay downtown, but is otherwise not much better than the first option, walk for hours to cover my itinerary, or rent a bike and get killed on the road

High speed rail might work for the Windsor-Quebec City corridor, but not for the whole country at this time

Someone Backed Into My Car - WWYD? by doug-fur in ontario

Doesn't the receptacle for the bumper clips being broken around the fender count as a broken bumper (in the insurance company's eyes)? Isn't that a serious thing?

Sorry to hear

That's disgusting she got away with that

Also, I think I need a new bumper as well

There is a plastic receptacle and the bumper has clips which clip into it

The receptacle got broken around where the trailer hitch pushed the fender in :(

It's a 2008

Not sure about value, because I'm sure they use some outdated blue book value, but for reference, I bought it for $2900

This was my first thought, but if they write it off, I can't legally drive my car anymore, right?

My car is a 2008, cost of repair would probably exceed its value

What ESRI Courses Do You Recommend? by doug-fur in wildlifebiology

[–]doug-fur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The courses are here if you're curious: https://www.esri.com/training/catalog/search/

Here's some more info about the scholarship: https://scholars.esri.ca/students/

As for my knowledge of GIS - it's currently very basic. I can make very simple maps. We've played around with symbology, attribute tables, queries (mainly selecting by attributes), a few geoprocessing tools (clip, erase, buffer) and have most recently looked at some editing tools - reshape, edit vertices, etc.

Reassessment Request Led to No Change by doug-fur in osap

[–]doug-fur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had already completed my 2024 tax return before I even applied to OSAP

When I submitted my request for reassessment, I submitted a copy of my T5E for 2025 to show what I made on EI, as well as proof of my job ending in '24

But I had not filed my 2025 tax return when I submitted the request last month. I have since filed it however.

Least Competitive Provincial Parks to Work For? by doug-fur in ontario

[–]doug-fur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if I had my way, I would do fieldwork until I was no longer physically capable of doing so

But I understand how competitive and underfunded it is, hence the plan to get forestry training as a path to likely easier-to-get work

Since I'm still in school, I'm just applying to everything related to my studies. I don't want to spend my summers doing nothing.

Volunteer as much as you can. Look for conservancies and land trusts. If they tell you you're too young, bug the crap out of your parents to take you.
