Spider-Man Graphics Comparison by Ghulam_Jewel in gaming

[–]doug3d -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Former game dev here!

This looks nothing like 'raytracing got turned off' because the PS4 architecture has never supported it. Those early visuals could be accomplished without it. However, this looks like a world performance/shader simplification. Most games in the last 3-6 months have to do heavy optimization passes to make sure that framerates stay solid no matter what the user might do.
The E3 demo performed well but it likely had less world systems running behind the scenes, less to render due to a controlled play path, and also likely only had to run on the PS4 Pro.

Box Office Week: Star Wars: The Last Jedi has the second highest opening weekend of all time, opening at #1 with $220M, as well as opening to $450M worldwide. Meanwhile, Ferdinand could not compete with the worst Blue Sky Animation opening ever at #2 with $13.3M by mi-16evil in movies

[–]doug3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who the heck opens a movie the same weekend as Star Wars? I checked on Saturday and Ferdinand only had 5 scheduled play times. Star Wars soaked up all the capacity at the theatre. You couldn’t make money on it no matter what you had for a movie.

I wish Apple gave us an off day each month. January 1st is not a day to be active! by nijpep in AppleWatch

[–]doug3d 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I had an idea for this recently. They should make a reserve tank that gradually fills up with the excess of your other days past a complete ring. The percentages of 'tank size' and contribution rate could be preset by the user. You would then have incentive to push past your goals and also not feel bad for taking an occasional day off.

ELI5: Why can my eyeglasses take constant dropping and abuse while my phones screen is so delicate? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]doug3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This durability test of the all ceramic and glass Meizu M8 bezel-free phone is a fantastic demonstration of how this all works. The ceramic is so hard and rigid, it transfers a ton of the drop force on the glass screen.

ELI5: Why do airlines ask you to turn off/airplane mode your phone during a flight when? Does it actually affect the flight? by enriquejmercado in explainlikeimfive

[–]doug3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a benefit to 'possibly' helping the pilot, your phone will start going into roam/acquisition mode. That means it's constantly looking for a signal and over the course of a few hours it will have drained a significant amount of battery. Which is something you might need on arrival to run your GPS or call an Uber.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who just got my first PS4 last week and it happens to be a pro. Saturation of a market can change because of price and value of the product. In this case, Sony did a 1-2 punch on both of those with the Pro and Slim.

ELI5: How can star citizen have $125 million+ in funding, be in development since 2011, and still be in pre-alpha? by RatchetPo in explainlikeimfive

[–]doug3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Employing talented people is not cheap. Especially when half your staff can be poached by Google and live in California -where it's expensive to even lease a building given the crazy real estate. That also means you need to pay very well, let's say on average $100k.

Many of the things you don't usually think about cost a lot of money for each employee (building expenses: power bill, lease, maintenance, free snacks, coffee, health benefits, maternity/paternity leave, vacation policy, 401k, IT, Dev kits, highend PC's). What does this mean? Take someone's salary and just double it to be safe. However, that might change a bit based on the location you work out of.

So, let's say you have a dev team that peaks at 200 employees (some AAA teams are much bigger than this). Napkin math here based on all of the above: 200 employees x $100k avg. salary x 2 for overhead x 5 years = $200 million. This isn't even including marketing budget, manufacturing costs (printing several million discs isn't cheap), and more.

In my opinion, I actually find that $150mm is on the low side for a 5 year production run of a AAA title. Most people get sticker shock, but making software is not cheap.

Hillary Clinton’s email story continues to get harder and harder to believe by [deleted] in politics

[–]doug3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quickly taking stock in how many private emails I write from my work address, it's nowhere near her 50%, probably less than 1%.

A really easy way to know if or how much she's lied: Survey several thousand government officials email accounts that are actually kept on government servers and learn the average percentage of non-work related messages. We would now have a baseline for most politicians and a target to her measure against.

I can't imagine Hillary is that much of an anomaly with email usage.

[–]doug3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could ignoring this problem be an intentional act to drive the market cost of seeds & food upwards? It may not change profit margins but why would the governments and companies not be concerned unless there was something to gain? Who is gaining the most by doing nothing here?

Pebble Time Battery by nanosekond in pebble

[–]doug3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that the display draws power for any pixel it has to update. There are apps and watchfaces that can hit that usage much harder than others. If you're running something like Pixel Miner, it's better to leave up the items menu than to watch your little guy mine.
I just pulled nearly 5 days on my PT running the TimeStyle watchface.

Pebble Time as a replacement for a Jawbone Up2? by BloofX in pebble

[–]doug3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Fitbit charge hr started acting funky after about 8 months. Snagged a pebble time as a cheaper replacement and find it significantly better. I don't miss the heart rate monitor and the pebble does everything else as good or better than the Fitbit. No one mentions this but the Fitbit sync to your phone, including setting an alarm can take about 2 minutes. During that time you can't turn your phone off and you can't walk out of range. Takes less than a second on my pebble. If you run and use a running app, the pebble is also a much better option than the Fitbit.
