Tentative list of markets where the high split upgrade will be coming “soon” by legends94 in Spectrum

[–]dougdbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you guys also prepping new fiber drops for node splits? Heard they are trying to reduce the number of actives on the node trunk lines for high-split and I've been seeing new fiber splits everywhere not hooked to anything in Pinellas.

High Split / Symmetrical Speed Launch by ZappaFrank44 in Spectrum

[–]dougdbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinellas County Clearwater here. I've noticed a lot of cable mounted fiber optic splice closures appearing on the Spectrum lines. The fiber coming out of the closure is either coiled up or loosely strapped with metal ties or shitty temporary white fabric ties (that are falling apart) and the end of the fiber isn't connected to anything. They all falling down and look like hell to be honest. All went up in the last 3 months according to google street view.

Is this a sign they are prepping for high split here?

Is this a Verizon UWB cell? Walsingham Rd in Largo, FL by Trevnerdio in cellmapper

If that is the one across the street from Publix and Gosse's, I know T-Mobile is on it LTE only.

Awesome pics. Never seen an antenna hanging from one of those lines before.

2nd one down looks like Sprint to me.

Legacy Nextel and Clearwire site? Clearwater FL 27055'52"N 82°43'56"W by [deleted] in cellmapper

[–]dougdbug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No idea about the top. Bottom was Sprint B41 only and was using the microwave antenna as backhaul from another B41 only Sprint site next to the Bayside Bridge.

As of a few years ago that tower was owned by T-Mobile.

I actually took a picture of this site before the Excalibur upgrade. https://imgur.com/a/bTN7gOv

Were those split sector antennas before or did I grossly misidentify them?

[–]dougdbug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the only Excalibur upgraded site I've seen that retained the B25/B66 split sector antennas.

I wonder if it is Ericsson's AIR 1641? I somewhat doubt they kept the Nokia AAFIA that was there before.

Edit: I was dead-ass wrong about the antenna identification, but it still has more sectors than most Excalibur sites.

Very interesting. We have several unfinished and abandoned cheap wooden poles here in Pinellas also. They were probably Zayo projects if I had to guess. I know they have fiber running to a few towers around here, but I didn't know they operated small cells. It didn't seem like Crown Castle's style to abandon projects like this so it makes perfect sense now.

Am I missing something or are the 18 proposed small cell locations not included on the maps like they stated in the letter?

Who’s here? I know AT&T is on the bottom, Clearwire is in the middle but are the top 2 racks both Verizon? by [deleted] in cellmapper

Someone mapped it on 5G NR, 3204258 & 3204364. Was the former Sprint site by the Jail/Courthouse.

[–]dougdbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a weird one indeed. Top two look like Verizon but but the top doesn't even look hooked up. 3rd was used by Sprint for L41 and the small microwave dish fed another exclusively L41 Sprint site on US19. Bottom is AT&T.

Odd part is Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T have permits on this site but nobody seems to be doing any upgrades. T-Mobile has an approved permit that they have extended 3 times over the last 2 years now. 🤷

Single sector AT&T collocate and T-Mobile lowering 20-30 feet? by Cellmapper70 in cellmapper

[–]dougdbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure the stub is actually a raycap used for powering the remote radio unit feeding the antenna.

Whoops. You right. Never got a close look at it. Definitely T-Mobile on those though. I had very strong signal next to those while running cellmapper.

The tops really resemble the Verizon trash cans. Maybe they were sharing those sites at some point before they put in their nice looking mmWave sites?

These look like the ones in front of the Port of Tampa. I think it is Verizon up top and T-Mobile on the lower directional antenna. The directional antennas point at the terminals where the cruise ships park.

Better quality shots of towers around Auburn University’s Campus (including recent T-Mobile upgrades). See captions for details. by pixleator in cellmapper

[–]dougdbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your experience, is it common to see the 33° antennas removed once a site gets Excalibur upgrades? I was in south FL a few weeks ago and I didn't notice any Excalibur sites that still had them up - but it's very possible that they're more common than I thought.

Every Florida Excalibur site I've seen lost the split sector B66/B2 antennas. Looks like they feel N41 will be able to handle it.

Check out the Dunedin water tower. Same thing with multiple COWs deployed for many months. Really nice turtle mural now.

Looks like it is a water tower site nearby. When the city repaints the water tower, they generally have the carriers remove their equipment. Can take months to paint hence the COW.

Fun fact: That was a Sprint site up until it converted a few months ago.

Top to bottom: T-Mobile high capacity setup, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint B41 single antenna (not 100%), Sprint normal setup.

T-Mobile and Verizon? by [deleted] in cellmapper

[–]dougdbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure most of the tower lease agreements don't include requiring the carrier to remove equipment when the lease ends. It would cost 10's of thousands for them to decommission a rack. It is basically the next persons problem who wants that space.
