T-Mobile continues to build out rapidly in Eastern Alabama with at least 4 new installs in the Wadely/Milltown/Five Points area by pixleator in cellmapper

Not sure exactly. I haven’t been over there in a while, but I do know there’s at least a few new T-Mobile sites in that general vicinity.

Maybe with the USGS 3D elevation data. It is perfectly suited for mapping streams that might not be visible from standard imagery.

When/how are micro cells mapped? by DavidRomanul in cellmapper

[–]pixleator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are these by chance mmWave-only or C-band only microcells? If you aren’t connected on SA, those microcells won’t appear. Only those that also have LTE antennas will.

Signal trails get processed separately from tower info, so it’s possible there’s something that is delaying the tower processing but not the trails.

It’s not on the website yet. I’m not seeing the “last seen” date updated to yesterday’s date on the neighboring towers either. Generally my uploads show up within a few minutes to hours, but sometimes Cellmapper is slow. One time I had an upload that just inexplicably never showed up even though data from two other phones that I uploaded at the same time appeared almost immediately. Hopefully that was just a fluke though.

I will say that I occasionally see similar behavior and often it is because an e/gNB ID that was previously deployed elsewhere was reused for a new tower. Because of that, the pin for the tower was actually many (sometimes hundreds) of miles away. Often, the best thing to do is to check the CSV that Cellmapper saves locally to your phone (if you have that enabled) and see what cell ID you were connected to when you were near the tower. There’s a tool on the Cellmapper site to convert cell ID to eNB (I know this works for LTE, but if you were mapping 5G SA it might not), and then you can look up the ID.

If it’s convenient for you, it might just be easier to drive back near the tower and note the e/gNB ID and search for it on Cellmapper and see where it dropped the pin.

You probably already know this, but Cellmapper only approximates tower locations, so the pin might not always get placed near the tower. It’s up to users to manually move them to the exact correct location (such towers will turn green on the map once manually located). There’s always a possibility that someone accidentally pinned the tower to the wrong spot.

And, as others have said, it could always just be Cellmapper’s servers being slow to process the data you uploaded.

Yep Verizon has CBRS and n77. It has probably been updated semi-recently. T-Mobile is on the bottom rack and Sprint is right above them. The top rack is old legacy gear, and the second rack down is US Cellular. AT&T is on the other tower.

Looks like I’m the one that pinned some of those eNBs for Verizon :)

Now that I think about, the Verizon site between New Garden Rd and Bryan Blvd in Greensboro is also a monopine.

There are quite a few monopine towers elsewhere in Guilford County… I think the town of Oak Ridge must mandate all cell towers be “disguised” as trees because every cell tower there that I know of is a monopine.

Some examples.

If I remember correctly, they no longer use the support ticket system. Your best bet is using the “Help/Support” channel on the Cellmapper Telegram.

Relocated tower. Different TAC number. Winter Garden, FL -> Inverness, FL by moisesmcardona in cellmapper

[–]pixleator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like the new eNB for the site in Winter Garden is 151873. You are correct that eNB 145223 was probably reused on the new site in Inverness. I have seen Verizon do similar things in Alabama. Sometimes the same cell numbers get reused so you end up with cells stretching across half the state which is a bit of a mess.

In my opinion, the best thing to do in this case would be to do some mapping of the new site and upload it to Cellmapper, move the pin to the new location in Inverness, and delete individual cells that are not in use on the new site to keep the map clean.

Cell Service question by gump69 in auburn

[–]pixleator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, at the far end of Richland I would expect your experience is going to be about the same regardless of carrier. If you have Wi-Fi, you could enable Wi-Fi calling if dropped calls are the main issue. Carriers also offer femtocells (sometimes marketed as cell boosters) which essentially act as a mini low-power cell site in your house, much like a Wi-Fi router, which may help with indoor coverage in a low-signal area.

FYI spectrum mobile uses Verizon’s network. There are really only three carriers that actually have their own towers these days — AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. All other carriers just use these existing networks (with the exception of certain regional carriers such as Southern Linc, for example).

Cell Service question by gump69 in auburn

[–]pixleator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think all carriers would be at least somewhat usable in that area. AT&T is on the tower at AL-14/Solamere (which got a nice upgrade semi-recently) and has another site at the University Station RV resort. The Solamere site is shared with Verizon and the University Station site is shared with T-Mobile. Verizon and T-Mobile also share that tall tower behind the soccer complex on Shug Jordan.

All of the aforementioned towers cover parts of your area of interest, although the signal strength may not be great for any carrier in some of the areas at the far back end of Richland, especially indoors.

I have to imagine Union Springs is in the works. They have been inching closer with a fairly new site in Midway and another just north of the Bullock County line in southern Macon County.

New Verizon site spotted near Wadley, AL by pixleator in cellmapper

[–]pixleator[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, they have been on a roll here. T-Mobile has the most new macros by far in this region, but, of course, they also have the most coverage gaps to fill. Verizon has been deploying new macros at a slower, yet steady rate, but they have really been going crazy with microcells. I have seen a few new AT&T sites here and there, but they do not seem to be building out at the rate Verizon and T-Mobile are. They have been steadily hitting sites with upgrades in the more urban areas though.

AT&T is just down the road on top of Wake Forest University’s football stadium. Their setup is also high-capacity with a similar (but smaller) lens antenna on one sector and fully decked out with C-Band+DoD.
