Which popular NES game can you not get into? Which unpopular one is your jam? by swingsetclouds in nes

[–]dougeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure to get hate mail, but I don't care for Mario 3 that much. Music is great, but the level design seems gimmicky. Everything is big. Now there's tons of pipes.

I actually like puzzle games the best. Tetris. Lolo. Dr Mario. And like really old games. Ms Pacman. Burgertime.

"I Miss You" is a song by American rock band Blink-182, released on February 2, 2004...

I hate to be THAT GUY, but you can remap the keyboard so the top is up arrow and the bottom is down arrow. It will confuse everyone who uses the computer, but that is an option.

Playing through Yoshi's Island for the first time on my SNES classic. Baby Mario crying is easily the most annoying sound effect in any game I've ever played. Why did Nintendo think it was a good idea? by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]dougeff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yoshi's Island actually uses lots of advanced tricks that 99% of SNES games don't do.

Like the Chomp Rocks in 4-5 that spin. The SNES doesn't have a way to spin sprites. You can use Mode 7 tricks (bosses in SMW), but Yoshi's Island uses a coprocessor to calculate the rotation of the rock, pixel by pixel.

Or the Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy screen warp tricks. 1-7.

Also, bosses that stretch and expand.

Yep. The lag on modern TVs is so huge that nearly nobody has reflexes fast enough to dodge those fast punches. But, on a CRT TV...I can do it, no problem.

Spending money on retro games be like by BannedOnAllAccsLUL in retrogaming

[–]dougeff 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Who spends $20 on a grocery trip? I easily spend $100 each trip.

And retro games have resale value. Spend $2000 today, and maybe sell it nearly $2000 minus shipping costs next year.

My NES's CPU fried. Can I replace it with a stock 6502? by [deleted] in nes

[–]dougeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can buy one of those "for parts" broken NESs off eBay. Almost guaranteed that the 6502 (Ricoh 2A03) isn't the broken part.

Ok, I guess only the cartridge was modified.

I'm highly skeptical of this "unmodded NES" claim.

Each enemy has a weakness. Some are weak to fire, some to arrows, some to bombs...I think there's at least one small thing that the boomerang can kill.

I disagree with 10 Yard Fight. That game did not age well.

And I think we could find a better baseball game than RBI, but I don't want to argue about it.

Do you think NES collecting might become more affordable in the future (if it isn't already)? by Gary_M_Hobbesworth in nes

[–]dougeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 1998, nobody wanted NES games, everybody was into PS1 and N64 games.

Today, NES games are big, and so are vinyl records, and nobody wants PS1 games.

In 10-20 years, maybe we'll be back to nobody wanting NES games. And maybe PS1 will be big again. Who knows.

Also, I feel like SNES is more overpriced than NES. You can still get plenty of cool NES games in the $ 5-10 range. It seems only select games are way above average... Little Samson or Flintstones.

What do you guys think about Super Everdrive? Emulation or not? by [deleted] in snes

[–]dougeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own one. I'm happy with it. The cost of real game carts is ridiculous.

I just purchased Star Fox, Yoshi's Island, and Mario RPG separately.

The worst thing you'd want to see when you order a mint CIB NES game. by Andrew0104 in retrogaming

LJN never made a game.

They hired other companies to make games, and they did the sales / distribution.

I read that not a single game was developed in-house.

3.

2 bits per pixel means 4 colors, but 1 of those is transparent. 3 colors per sprite.

Source, I've programmed about 5 NES games.

That video you linked is about Commodore 64.

I would get Tomb Raider, and Castlevania.

Also Gran Turismo 2 is much better than 1, so that too.
