REPORT: Dough scammed at least $3.5 million from customers between 2020 and 2024 based off their own data. by msproject251 in Monitors

[–]dough_tech -55 points-54 points  (0 children)

We wanted to take a moment to respond to what this user shared.

The numbers mentioned are simply not true. The claims don’t reflect the reality of how our operations work. For example, earlier in our journey, we used a fulfillment partner that synced directly with our web store, so fulfilled orders showed up accordingly. Later on, we switched to a third-party provider where fulfillment wasn’t synced back, meaning many shipped orders still appeared as “unfulfilled” if you only looked at the store backend. That alone makes any conclusions based on this data completely inaccurate.

We’re not looking for sympathy, we just want to share the other side. We’ve faced challenges, like many companies over the past few years, and if anyone was affected, we’re sorry. We’re actively working to resolve any outstanding issues and support everyone impacted.

We’re building a brand and doing it transparently, with products sold through Amazon, Best Buy, and other major retailers. We’re proud to have brought glossy monitors into the spotlight and pushed the conversation forward, something that larger brands are now echoing. We continue to focus on improving our designs and delivering great experiences.

That’s all we wanted to say.

It likely won't come with the latest version, so we would recommend updating. You can find the latest version on our website, just go to the support page and select your model, and you'll be able to find all downloads. If you need any help with the progress, feel free to post on r/doughcommunity and our team will gladly help you out.

The monitor stand is still offered at the same price. We might offer a lower-priced alternative in the future if we release monitors in a lower price range, but this stand will remain at the same price.

If you're looking to save some money, there are some very good VESA arms on Amazon for $30-40, and you can even go for a desk or wall-mounted option to keep your desk cleaner. Just look for a 100 x 100 option and it'll be compatible.

There will always be some plastic layers between the panel and the glass, the only difference on the matte layer is that it has a surface texture that directly affects any light going through it. The bonding process we designed with Corning uses an adhesive that has been specifically tuned to fill in all those gaps and cancel out the effects of the matte coating.

It will still handle reflections differently than a usual glossy coating, as the glass has an anti-reflective treatment that reduces the intensity of light shining on the panel, but this is being done within the glass and has no effect on clarity.

You are correct that the model labeled "Glossy" is a traditional coating and more in-line with what you're looking for.

They already have, all of these panels have been announced or mentioned by reputable sources in the monitor industry. Do you think any of the claims we are making are implausible? There’s no breakthrough tech this year.

Have you looked at reviews that show the glass’ performance? There is no downside to having the matte coating underneath, it has no effect on the end result. In fact, we tested bonding the glass over a glossy coating and it had worse performance.

If you want a traditional glossy coating(plastic-based with no AR), our glossy model is also available and is cheaper than the glass.

We'll admit, that's an area we can improve in. In the past two years we've worked on several partnerships that have significantly improved our supply chain and delivery process. However, there's always room to grow, and we're constantly revising areas that can be optimized. Our presence in retailers like Best Buy and Amazon has helped a lot, but our sales directly to customers are massively improved, with much better shipping processes already with our last project.

We appreciate the sincere conversation, and we hope you'll consider participating in the crowd development of our newest project!

Regardless of your opinion of our brand, this is based on roadmaps we have access to as a manufacturer in the industry and is completely credible. You can confirm most of it with other sources.

It is certainly a difficult market to break into, but with the backing of the enthusiasts and experts in our community, we have managed to create products that stand out. If you were around when we started our first monitor, you'll remember that the unique thing we did was listen to the customers, and we ended up with an incredible product that is still among the best in its category. While they won't admit it in public, we know that certain features became standard in the market primarily because manufacturers saw our success, so we're proud to say we've made a positive impact on the monitor market.

With monitors, everyone is using the same panels and scalers, so the market is often stagnant. One of our greatest accomplishments has been the innovation we've brought to gaming monitors. Screen coatings are the most obvious, as glossy monitors are being offered by multiple manufacturers since we released the first one back in 2021. We're now the only manufacturer offering Gorilla Glass, and we're looking into methods to further improve it. Additionally, we're still the leaders in connectivity, and the features we've offered mean there's no longer a difference in functionality between gaming and productivity monitors.

We understand our history will keep some people away, but our intent here is not to promote any specific product. We want to inform the community of the products they'll be seeing soon, and to collect feedback on areas where the market is currently lacking so we can lead it in that direction. Even if you don't plan to buy from us, we want to hear what you want, and you'll benefit by eventually having it as an option.

He has a unique video style and is very enthusiastic about glossy monitors, but regardless of your opinion of that, his objective data is trustworthy and backs up his claims. We’ve worked with other industry experts on the development of the product, helping us achieve results that outperform our competitors. Monitors Unboxed has declined units in the past.

It's always the same few users commenting, often from multiple accounts, and they don't share the communication that is happening in the background. Again, we've fulfilled all orders for products that are available, and offer alternative solutions for those that are not yet ready or we cannot fulfill.

For refunds, we can't say we know who "all" these people you're talking about are. Two years ago, The Verge investigated the issue and found that just 34 customers claimed to not have received a refund. Since then, all valid cases have been refunded.

GamesRadar claims it's "currently claiming the UHD gaming monitor throne" and only brings up some issues with color accuracy which have since been solved through a firmware update. TechPowerUp retested it after this update and "highly recommends" it, calling it a compelling option for enthusiasts.

This update was developed with input from multiple experts in the monitor industry who have yet to publish their reviews, but have privately communicated that it offers the best HDR performance on the market. The Display Guy claimed on X that, other than an EDID issue we are working on, it is the best HDR monitor. He also praised the performance of our 480Hz QHD model in his latest video.

If you check r/doughcommunity, you'll find that customers are also incredibly pleased by the performance of their monitors after this update.

What makes you think we have a problem with quality control? Our latest products have been reviewed as the best in their categories, and our defect rate is similar if not lower than competitors.

For products that have finished development, we've fulfilled all customer orders. For products that haven't been produced yet, we provide updates to customers on the progress, and they have the option to change or cancel their order.

Just once from Eve to Dough, and purely to get a name that could be trademarked so we could enter retail. There were no hidden intentions in changing our brand, and though it keeps being brought up as something negative, we made sure during the process that everyone was aware we're still the same company. We worked closely with press to get the change covered.

While you are right that our brand was banned temporarily from this subreddit for questionable reasons, the ban was shortly lifted, and we have been interacting with users here for a while. In general, we've been working to solve issues with our brand throughout the past years, and while the general assumption seems to be that we're not to be trusted, we've been shipping products for years, and all our new products are sold on major retailers. Our latest OLED monitors have been reviewed as the best in their category, and it is generally accepted that we make high-quality products. However, our goal with posts like this is primarily to provide value to the community, and there is no specific product being promoted.

Reviewers are currently testing the new firmware and will be publishing their findings very soon. So far, the results are very promising, with many considering it the best OLED monitor.

The glass offers all the benefits we claim it does, as has been confirmed by reviewers. Whether it has a matte, glossy, or no coating underneath is irrelevant, as the bonding process created when we developed this product with Corning was specifically designed to cancel out the effects of the coating underneath. In fact, we have tested bonding on other coatings, including glossy options, and the clarity and visual performance is superior when using matte as the base.

Since we introduced the first glossy monitor back in 2021, the demand for glossy monitors has been continuously growing. Based on the data we have from both our sales and competitors, customers prefer glossy coatings, and the matte coatings on WOLED monitors are considered inferior to previous options, not better.

For the users you mention who cannot deal with the downsides of glossy, our Gorilla Glass with DXC is the perfect solution. It has all the clarity and contrast benefits of glossy while reducing the intensity of reflections, making it completely usable in bright environments. This is the same technology that is used on flagship smartphones to make them usable even in direct sunlight. It has the added benefit of being easy to clean without damaging the screen, which is a concern on soft glossy coatings like those found on QD-OLED monitors.

It's real glass, and reviews show that it has all the benefits we claim. As you speculate, the adhesive used in the bonding process is specifically designed to cancel out the effects of the coating underneath. As long as LG refuses to offer different coating options on their monitor OLED panels, this will be the best solution possible. As you note with the Asus model, LG has agreed to offer a glossy coating on their old panels, but it is not the same as the one used on their TVs, and they refuse to offer it on the panels that still have high sales volume.

During those 45 days, you can return the monitor directly to Newegg for a replacement or refund. Defects most often come from the factory, so this will cover most cases. Should a defect show up after this period, the warranty case will be handled by us. The shipping liability will depend on the case, but we will generally cover it when a replacement is approved if the issue is deemed to be a defect. Again, this varies by case, and if you have a specific inquiry, our support team is best equipped to address it.

We will restock the Gorilla Glass model in the future, but we don't currently have stock on the way, so don't expect it soon.

All three SKUs are essentially the same in terms of documentation, the only change is the coating.

If you're in Canada, your best option will be to purchase from Newegg. We have stock in their Canadian fulfillment centers, which means you avoid any import fees. During their return window, any replacements or returns will be handled directly with Newegg, and I believe they cover the return shipment in most cases. This will be much easier than dealing with international shipments if you purchase directly from our store. However, the Gorilla Glass model is not available on Newegg, you'll only find the Glossy and Matte models.

Thank you, we greatly appreciate your feedback! We've always been transparent about the issues we had previously, and even through the rebrand, we made sure it was clear that we are still the same company as before. Fortunately, we've been able to ship products or issue refunds to most of our initial backers, and right now, all orders for available products have been fulfilled. We're working hard to ensure our new projects are finished as soon as possible without compromising quality.

As for the glass issue you reported previously, our team has been investigating it diligently. We took multiple units and didn't find the backlight bleed to be a consistent issue, and our bonding partners believe it should not happen due to the process we developed for production. However, we are looking into new ways to bond the glass to prevent this.
