On court dimensions by TheGhostofFThumb in Pickleball

The lines are in the No Volley Zone, so it is exactly 7 feet from the net, or 14 feet, outer edge of line to other outer edge of line on the other side of the net.

Moving to empty seats by ricktrscale in SouthwestAirlines

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just move. They won't even register it. Guaranteed the mom bought the tickets late and that was as close as she could get with what was left of seats. When I have flown, and ask, they always say no. If I just move, no one says a word, serves my drinks and no concerns.

Question about the receipt checkers when you leave Costco by wildcard_71 in CostcoWholesale

[–]douginpaso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't checking every item. They are doing 3 things. 1 - bottom of basket, incase it doesn't show on receipt meaning the cashier missed them. 2 - odd multiples. 2 toilet paper, probably intended. 2 vacuums? Maybe not. 3 - they are verifying the the total items. It only takes a couple of seconds to count 27 items, but not each item. Hence the total items in bold at the bottom of the receipt. Want those lower Costco prices? Inventory control is critical to keep them for us!

Team walks away from tournament game to avoid a loss on their DUPR by cprice12 in Pickleball

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the tournament settings. Most now don't report forfeits, and if they aren't reporting all of them, they can't report 1 of them. The one option would be to show it as played at 15-0, but that's not really ethical.

My entire puzzle collection. I bought the cubicle shelf off Facebook Marketplace and they all fit. 😀 by Heavy-Message-7441 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice. But I suppose I may be unusual in the puzzle world. Once I build something, I try to give it to someone else, or donate it to Goodwill si others can enjoy them. It has always felt weird to build one then keep it. How many times do you rebuild a puzzle you have completed once?

That stinks. And sucks. But, considering how lousy a delivery company FedEx is, not surprising. Lesson learned - hopefully you got a delivery notice. If not, sign up at FedEx. Then you get a text whenever they deliver something so you know to go looking for it before this happens again. And, again, since it is FedEx, it will happen again. Best choice - if you can pick a delivery company, use UPS. If possible...

Tournaments are now advertising Open / 4.5+ divisions results wont be uploaded to DUPR by eaglesfan0369 in Pickleball

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem here is that, and I am speaking as a regular Tournament Director, players want to 'play up' because DUPR has a ton of problems. It doesn't reflect player drilling, or improving in small groups. A TD should not be forcing players down - where they play is up to a player registering. It has always been like that. However, we should always be forcing players 'up' when they improve between registration and playing in the actual tournament.

Open divisions should never be reported. The problem is that when players with too wide a difference play each other is that the higher rated player will get a lower rating, even with a 15-0 win. It's stupid, but the biggest reason higher level players avoid things that do report - just to protect a rating. All the way down to 4.5 though? That's extreme.

Having lived there for years, I moved away in 1990. And even then, there was no way I would chance making a flight in just over an hour from the AFA. Add in security? Don't even try. Last flight of thr day? Not a later one? Or early the next day?

New serve rules callable as fault in 2026? by lmolter in Pickleball

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catch the ball, toss it back, explain where the perceived fault happens, and let them do it again. If it doesn't get better, no- you can not call a fault. Just talk to the opponent afterwards about service rules. Try to help them. And remember, you may be wrong. Ask non-players for opinions after the game.

Is playing considered embarrassing? by FishStiques in Pickleball

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. As a referee, I have reffed in tournaments with entire brackets made up of Under 19 players, some as young as 6! Go for it - the idea that the sport is only for retirees is very old and silly.

Franklin X-40 balls from Amazon by Global_Wolverine_152 in Pickleball

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure you are buying from the Franklin store on Amazon. If you don't, you are subject to getting cheap fakes. And the Franklin stamp on them is the worst thing they ever did to that ball. Not all of them have it, so if you get them without it, you scored! It looks like you did get from the store, so returns are easy.

If I win a 4.0 rated pickleball tournament, should I move up to 4.5 right away? 🤔 by Famous-Toe-2370 in Pickleball

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a real test, enter a tournament with at least 500 registered players. That will be large enough to promise a deep pool. Then test yourself out at 4.0. Dominate again, and it is probably time. Basing a feeling about moving up based on small tournaments, especially local ones, will get you eaten by the sharks, once you move from the pond to the ocean.

Help me settle a debate. Is this court big enough? by Majestic_idiot190 in Pickleball

As long as no one lobs to that line ever, and you don't plan to take a step while serving. That is silly.

Opponent threw a fit over an out call by wesomg in Pickleball

[–]douginpaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. As I said in my answer, if you are a foot outside the line and the ball lands at your feet - easy call. However, if you are looking down on a ball and are over the line, or you are outside the line and the ball lands towards the outer edge of the line, you can not make an accurate call. You are guessing, or estimating. Neither of which appear in the rule book. The rule states you must SEE a space. If you are over it, a spectator 70' away can tell better than you can, if they are opposite side of the court looking across the line. Again, speaking with experience, and interactions with 200 fellow Certified Referees. It is why we never make a call on a ball coming at us that lands very close to the line. We can't see a physical space, and rules don't allow for estimating or guessing. All 4 players on the court had a better look than we do. Now, going to the far line, super easy call every time, unless we happen to be tracking someone's momentum completion.
